I recently got a new- well, not newer, but better laptop from my cousin. I didn't want to deal with redownloading all of my data on it and stuff, so I just swapped my hard drive from my old laptop to my new one. Along with learning that Windows likes to de activate whenever someone uses it on a different machine (stupid but not the issue I'm here for) I learned that grub just doesn't want to... exist. The only bootloader I can get to load is the Windows 7 EFI boot manager. Now, I have Arch and Ubuntu installed alongside Windows, so that's kind of an issue. I can get to Ubuntu from my boot menu, but not Arch. I try reinstalling GRUB from Ubuntu, but even though it reports no error, my laptop still boots into the EFI boot manager. My current solution is to use a usb stick or CD with grub on it, and just use that to boot, but that's a little bit of a hassle when I take my laptop around places, I don't want to always have to bring a usb stick or CD around with it. What should I do to get GRUB working? (I heard it has issues on older EFI firmware and this laptop is from 2012 or 13, so that could be an issue.)

Also as a side and off topic note, does anyone know how I could activate Windows 7 today? I tried some activation scripts but that didn't work and Microsoft's official website just wants me to upgrade to Windows 10 and that's just not happening.

   submitted by /u/masterkitty2006
[link] [comments]
