First off, I want to thank this community for all the help I have gotten both through explicitly asking questions and just through watching others questoins.

Main point:

I recently switched to EXWM because its awesome. I found some rough edges that I have been trying to smooth out and wanted to share a particularly simple one.

The EXWM wiki suggets merging framemove with windmove to move between workspaces on two different monitors. I found that framemove considers not just visible workspaces but also inactive (invisible) workspaces. Imagine the following setup

Monitor 1: assigned workspaces 0 and 1; currently showing workspace 1

Monitor 2: assigned workspaces 2; currently showing monitor 2. Focus is on workspace 2.

Trying to move across frames using framemove could actually cause focus to not just switch to monitor 1 but also monitor 1 to change from showing workspace 1 to workspace 0.

Turns out it was pretty simple to modify framemove to restrict to only considering currently active frames using the predicate function `exwm-workspace--active-p`.

In case anyone else runs into this issue take a look at my forked version of framemove: https://github.com/jsilve24/framemove.

Honestly, it seems rediculous that I forked this repo since my contribution is essentially nil. That said, I really wasn't sure a better way since the original library is on the emacswiki and also maintained by the emacsmirror github user.

That said, hope this helps someone else.

Cheers.

   submitted by /u/JustinSilverman
[link] [comments]

Hi folks, I've recently built a basic command line that can download a program and all its dependence into an AppDir and uses appimagetool to export the final AppImage to the desktop.

This is not much, but it is a first attempt to create AppImages starting from Arch Lnux packages (being them normally built from old libraries of Debian and derivatives).

Are you interested to any improvement or would you like to create any fork?

I see my NVIDIA GPU uses like 12 to 15 W of power, when in battery mode, while the total power consumption reported by powerstat is 28W!

Is there any way to turn off/suspend only the gpu, and manually wake it, only when I need it?

Also, I see xorg using my GPU, even though my display is rendered with iGPU. Does that contribute to the GPU being awake all the time? Is there a way to disable that?

Note - My laptop dosen't have optimus

Edit: Is there any way to have only compute stuff, and not the graphical stuff in nvida driver install? I use my GPU only for compute on Linux.

Thanks!

   submitted by /u/SuperSecureHuman
[link] [comments]

My quick story.

I got tired of Microsoft policy and I was looking for alternative. Tried most of well-known different distros and literally I encountered annoying bugs and inconveniences with all of them. When I heard about arch I fell in love with the idea of making OS from scratch. I swear that if the wiki and guides weren't that rich of content I wouldn't even think of trying. It took me around 10 tries in 2 days but with every other try I learnt something new. The knowledge of every step proved to me that its better to understand than try to brainlessly copy and paste. The final installation felt like a speed-run (~15minutes). Back to now, I've been using arch with KDE plasma for 3 months and it runs flawlessly. No bugs with DE which I had with popular distros. I am absolutely content with my arch experience.

In the meantime with the knowledge I got I was able to gently introduce linux (not arch) to my mother and mother-in-law. They've been using linux for a month and they are amazed how quickly it runs compared to windows.

I love the community and I am happy to be part of it.

   submitted by /u/tornado90
[link] [comments]
