I found an excellent deal on this Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ADA05 laptop whose OS I completely intend to nuke in favor of some Linux distro (inclined to arch/opensuse but not completely decided).

The problem is that me, being (what I self consider) a Linux user for some years, was unable to install Ubuntu on another Lenovo laptop some time ago. I couldn’t, for the life of me, get past of the grub installation, always with a dark error that grub-install couldn’t find the /dev/sdX where I was installing. I tried anything: disabled fastboot/secureboot, tried several distros at this point, swapped to a brand new disk and the result was the same, with the laptop ending up being crippled by windows again, which it happily ate up.

I have read the arch wiki and other forums about how does this laptop team up with Linux with mixed results to the point that I have no idea if this would be a good laptop for Linux or not. (Hope I didn’t overlook anything)

Does anyone have first hand experience on this model or similar? Does anyone know a source where I can read the compatibility of certain laptop with Linux (for future reference) ?

   submitted by /u/elestadomayor
[link] [comments]

I currently have to read a library source code for some project that I'm working on, so far I'm very grateful for git-timemachine, magit (magit-blame mostly) and LSP. However, I sometimes find myself wanting to do some other stuff like tracking a function for example and then go back to where I was in the same buffer, there's probably some Emacs keybinding for that which I am not aware of.

So do you guys know how to do this ? also if you have any tips or packages that are useful for source code reading on Emacs I would be very grateful.

I love this community <3

   submitted by /u/HeiWiper
[link] [comments]

Hi all.

I added the following snippets of commands to my
bashrc
file in order to replace the ssh-agent with the gpg-agent. The result is that it seems to work only with one of them and not the other.

Here is the working one:

export GPG_TTY="$(tty)" export SSH_AUTH_SOCK="/run/user/$UID/gnupg/S.gpg-agent.ssh" gpg-connect-agent updatestartuptty /bye > /dev/null

and here's the non working one:

export GPG_TTY="$(tty)" export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=$(gpgconf --list-dirs agent-ssh-socket) gpgconf --launch gpg-agent

I read somewhere that the second one works on modern systems. But what does modern mean? Why this does not work properly in my case?

   submitted by /u/netpumber
[link] [comments]

EDIT: Never mind! The function I was looking for is
M-x indent-relative
. That solves my problem. I can combine that with return to make a custom function to do what I want.

Writing a shell script, Emacs adds 4 tabs and 1 space. I don’t want this to happen. I want Emacs to go to the first character in the previous line. Emacs is going wild with auto-formatting. I want electricity. I like electricity. But I don’t like auto-formatting. That is, I don’t like tons of random tabs and spaces added for no reason.

for in i in 1 2 <tab><tab><tab><tab><space><cursor is now here>

I don’t want that. I want :

for in i 1 2 <cursor is here>

M-x electric-indent-mode
doesn’t work, because then I lose electricity, which is also problematic. I like electricity, but I don’t like auto-formatting. Turning off electricity isn’t good:

for in i 1 2 do <cursor is here>

I want the cursor to be aligned with the
do
, not at the beginning of the line. Does anyone know how to do this?

   submitted by /u/SequentialDesign
[link] [comments]
