<!-- SC_OFF --><div class="md"><p>Hej fellows guixers,</p> <p>I&#39;ve been wondering this ever since I started using Guix. I tried looking for this in the manuals of both Guile and Guix but didn&#39;t find anything.</p> <p>What does the percent sign in <code>%output</code>, <code>%load-path</code> etc mean?</p> <p>I read in an article that it denotes a global variable, but I was unable to confirm it and am unsure if that&#39;s true or if there is some guix-related specialty to it. If it is a global variable, is this akin to the convention in Common Lisp to have asterisks for global variables?</p> <p>Thanks for tips / suggestions!</p> <p>Have a good day, fellows :)</p> </div><!-- SC_ON --> &#32; submitted by &#32; <a href="https://www.reddit.com/user/olivuser"> /u/olivuser </a> <br/> <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GUIX/comments/rkkv4u/what_is_the_meaning_of_the_percent_sign_loadpath/">[link]</a></span> &#32; <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GUIX/comments/rkkv4u/what_is_the_meaning_of_the_percent_sign_loadpath/">[comments]</a></span>

<p>
After reading the Wired article, <a href="http://www.wired.com/2015/02/on-the-joy-of-mastery">Why We Should Design Some Things to
Be <i>Difficult</i> to Use</a>, I finally realize that Emacs <i>should</i> be hard
to use, and we really should just give up changing it to be easier
for new-comers.
</p>
<p>
This quote sums up my 20 year experience with Emacs:
</p>
<blockquote>
<p>
[Fujifilm took] the controls out of deep menu functions and putting
them back on chrome knobs that just beg to be twiddled.
</p>
<p>
I bought a Fujifilm X100 two years ago. It was the first piece of
technology Id bought in 15 years where I had to read the
manual. Actually, Ive read the manual at least four times. Now Im
taking the best pictures of my life, and I love it. By being hard to
use, my X100 made me a better photographer.
</p>
</blockquote>
<p>
Seems like Emacs users are now in some elite club where the hazing
ritual amounts to learning Lisp. Consequently, Ive decided to start
signing all my Emacs-related correspondence with:
</p>
<blockquote>
<p>
Yours in Emacs,
</p>
<p>
Howard
</p>

<p>Lars Ingebrigtsen has an interesting post about <a href="https://lars.ingebrigtsen.no/2021/11/24/the-most-controversial-change-in-emacs-history/">proportional fonts in the Emacs mode line</a>. His post shows the same mode line in both fixed and proportional fonts. Theres no arguing that the proportional fonts look better and that they allow for the display of more information on the mode line.</p>
<p>Still, the suggestion to move to proportional fonts is an old one and has always been controversial. There are some serious objections. For one, things like the point position are updated with every character typed and that can cause the mode line display to shift right or left.</p>
<p>Ingebrigtsen says that theyre running a month long test on Emacs Master in which proportional fonts on the mode line are enabled by default. Theyve installed a fix for the problems of things like the point position and the developers are hoping that that will address previous objections to using proportional fonts.</p>
<p>Regular readers know that I dont care much about this sort of thing. All in all, Im happy with a fixed width font mode line but I dont find the idea of proportional fonts objectionable either. If youre tracking Emacs Master, be sure to let the developers know what you think.</p>

</figure>
<p>It seems that I&rsquo;m not alone in the sewing world in having slightly lost my
sewing mojo (or &lsquo;sewjo&rsquo;) recently. It&rsquo;s not that I have completely stopped
sewing: I made a <a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/making-things-in-isolation/">birthday shirt</a>, another pair of <a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/linen-persephone-sailor-trousers/">Persephone sailor trousers</a>, and
an (un-blogged) pair of Lycra workout leggings, as well as many masks and my
<a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/a-shelf-and-keyboard-mat-for-my-desk/">keyboard mat</a>, though the latter barely counts as sewing. Those items are
obviously not nothing, but the output is less than I would normally have sewn in
a comparable period. I certainly don&rsquo;t have <em>more</em> spare time than I would
normally have. Even though I have been working from home, my home office is my
sewing room and vice-versa, and unfortunately not big enough to be set up for
both functions simultaneously, otherwise I might have been able to take a short
breaks to do 20 minutes or so of sewing in my day and get away from the screen.
Mostly, I think the problem has been that while I enjoy the sewing process
itself enormously, my main impetus to sew is to produce clothes to wear in the
presence of other people, and those opportunities have been severely lacking
since March. Recently, I wanted to make something cosy and comforting, but which
would also look fairly smart on work calls, and so I decided to make a <a href="https://shopwiksten.com/products/womens-haori-sewing-pattern">Wiksten
Haori jacket</a>.</p>
<p>Once again, I am slow to this particular sewing party. People have been raving
about this pattern for ages and I have been slow to pick up on it. I suddenly
realised that a) I could make it out of the remains of the linen fabric from my
Persephone trousers and some batik I bought in Indonesia in 2019, and b) it
would function like a warm, soft, unstructured cardigan, but would look like a
smart-casual jacket. It would therefore help me &lsquo;stash-bust&rsquo; my fabric pile and
also work perfectly for working from home. The pattern is based on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haori">Japanese
haori</a> jackets worn over a kimono. It has dropped sleeves and a boxy, rectangular
shape to the pieces and a rolled-over shawl collar, and as it is fully lined, it
is intended to be reversible. You can also choose to fold back the collar in
half (to make the front more open), or leave it unfolded for a different look
and greater coverage. The pattern is intended to be worn with a lot of ease and
so is over-sized. I did wonder about going down a few sizes, but in the end I
just went down one size so it would still have the intended over-sized
silhouette, and would enable me to wear multiple layers underneath for warmth
during the winter!</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s not a complicated pattern, and is very well-drafted with clear
instructions, so it wasn&rsquo;t an overly-challenging sew. Cutting out turned into
the most difficult part, because I had limited lengths of fabric from my stash,
involving a degree of fabric tetris in order to fit all the pattern pieces on.
The batik fabric I used for the lining was particularly challenging because it
had a large pattern repeat, and the pattern (like a lot of batik) ran down the
length of the fabric rather than across the width, and the fabric itself was not
very wide. I wanted to centre the pattern on the centre back line since I could
wear it lining side out. I love patterned fabric, but every time I use it I
remember how difficult it makes placing pattern pieces and cutting out!
Eventually, the only way I could arrange the cutting was to piece together the
sleeves vertically by including a horizontal seam. I managed to do this matching
the pattern pretty well, so it is almost invisible unless you look closely. I
also opted to use scraps of denim for the (huge!) pockets and the undercollar
piece.</p>
<figure>
<img src="https://f000.backblazeb2.com/file/bsag-blog-imgs/wiksten%5Fhaori%5Fcollar%5Funfolded.jpeg"/>
</figure>
<p>I do really enjoy a clean-finished pattern. This one had a new-to-me technique
of bagging out the lining by sewing the outer and lining together at the hem
first, then sewing the sleeve cuffs and hemming them at the same time, and
finally closing the front and neckline seams with the collar. This very last
seam (turning under the remaining edge of undercollar and stitching it down to
enclose the neckline raw edge) was the trickiest one. My thick layers of
denim and linen meant that my sewing machine ploughed up a giant ridge of fabric
before it, no matter how hard I tried to wrangle it, and the end result
had some giant pleats in it. Since I finished it late on a Sunday evening, I
left this mess on the sewing naughty step for a couple of nights, then one
evening during the week, I unpicked the seam and hand sewed it back down, which
gave a much better finish.</p>
<figure>
<img src="https://f000.backblazeb2.com/file/bsag-blog-imgs/wiksten%5Fhaori%5Flining%5Fdetail.jpeg"/>
</figure>
<p>I&rsquo;ve already worn it during an online networking meeting this week, and found it
as cosy, soft, comfortable and smart as I had hoped. It was a lovely way to coax
my sewjo back to life again, and I expect I will make the pattern again at some
point.</p>

Head and Tail Commands in the Terminal<br />
When youre looking through files sometimes you just need to see the first or last lines of the document to see if its the one you need or get the info you want. The head and tail command will do just that.</p>
<p>head grabs the first lines of a file and tail displays the last lines. </p>
<p>As an example you could type head test.txt to get the first 10 lines.<br />
Or use the switch -n followed by a number to print any number of lines. Example: head -n 15 test.txt will give you 15 beginning lines.</p>
<p>Tail does the same thing but starting from the bottom. </p>

<p>The present report documents the otherwise subtle changes to the styling
of the <code>rainbow-delimiters</code> faces. I received user feedback from
Christopher Dimech, to whom I am most thankful. What we have tried to
achieve is two-fold (any errors are my own):</p>
<ol>
<li>Broaden the selection of colours, without prejudice to the
overarching accessibility standard of the themes (quantified as a
contrast in relative luminance of 7:1 between any given combination
of background and foreground—the WCAG AAA standard).</li>
<li>Control the colour distance between adjacent values, as those apply
to each level of delimiter depth.</li>
</ol>
<p>Those combined enhance the “rainbow” quality of the aforementioned
library and, thus, make the support for it at the theme level better
overall.</p>
<h2>Before and after</h2>
<p>Here are some close-up screenshots comparing the levels of delimiter
depth between old and new styles. Notice how the first level of the new
ones is the same as the main foreground (black/white). This little
touch ensures that you do not get colouration with no semantic value for
balanced expressions that are only one level deep.</p>
<p><img alt="Modus Operandi delimiters old" src="https://protesilaos.com/assets/images/attachments/modus-operandi-rainbow-delimiters-parens-old.png" /></p>
<p><img alt="Modus Operandi delimiters new" src="https://protesilaos.com/assets/images/attachments/modus-operandi-rainbow-delimiters-parens-new.png" /></p>

<p><img alt="Modus Vivendi delimiters new" src="https://protesilaos.com/assets/images/attachments/modus-vivendi-rainbow-delimiters-parens-new.png" /></p>
<h2>Contexualised effect</h2>
<p>Using those same styles, here is some code. Open the images to see them
at full scale. Also remember that bold and slanted constructs are
optional, as well as several other parameters—consult <a href="https://protesilaos.com/emacs/modus-themes">the Modus
themes manual</a>).</p>
<p><img alt="Modus Operandi delimiters code old" src="https://protesilaos.com/assets/images/attachments/modus-operandi-rainbow-delimiters-code-large-old.png" /></p>
<p><img alt="Modus Operandi delimiters code new" src="https://protesilaos.com/assets/images/attachments/modus-operandi-rainbow-delimiters-code-large-new.png" /></p>

<h2>Colour distance between the old colours</h2>
<p>The following tables, written in <code>org-mode</code> notation, calculate the
colour distance between adjacent delimiter foregrounds while accounting
for their positional placement (so 1 compared with 2, 2 with 3, and so
on):</p>
<pre><code class="language-org">#+DESCRIPTION: Colour distance between foregrounds (Modus Operandi old)

<p>You can see in the third column that the colour distance is
inconsistent, with some combinations being better than others. Our
intent here is to normalise the distance between each pair so that the
results are more uniform.</p>
<h2>Colour distance between the new colours</h2>
<p>Same principle as above, only now we are applying new colours in a
different sequence that is conducive to our ends. You can now tell that
the third column shows a greater level of consistency, understood as a
harmonised distance in colour space between each pair.</p>

<p>The exact same distance is not always possible, because each colour
value must also conform with our accessibility target when compared to
its background. What we do here is an approximation or else an attempt
to optimise the use of resources within an overarching constraint (a
good one, but a constraint nonetheless).</p>
<h2>Ongoing refinements</h2>
<p>Note that it is always easier to work with colours against a dark
backdrop. Colour is luminant and darkness is interpreted as the absence
of luminance, so nuances are easier to spot. This, in turn, means that
the potential for errors is greater, even after having narrowed the
colour space to only the values that pass the accessibility criterion of
the themes (the 7:1 contrast—also check the <code>modus-themes-contrast</code>
function that is documented in the manual).</p>
<p>Technicalities aside, this review constitutes another step towards
delivering a comprehensive package for styling GNU Emacs in accordance
with the highest legibility standard. It comes just a few days after
the overhaul of the <code>org-habit</code> faces (no report for that as I had other
things to write, but you can read the minutia in <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/135">issue
135</a>—thanks
again to Gustavo Barros for the feedback there).</p>
<p>With the major release of version <code>1.0.0</code> earlier this month, we are in
the process of iterating on what already is a solid basis. Propitious
growth, one might say.</p>
<p>If you use the themes and feel that something does not work well enough,
please <a href="https://protesilaos.com/contact">contact me</a>. I am always eager
to review things and learn from your insights.</p>

<p>The Hebrew Bible contains one story of human failure after another, leaving us with no doubt in our minds: humanity desperately needs a leader. In this episode, Tim walks us through the structure of the Hebrew Bible and how it shows us Jonah is an anti-leader, the opposite of what humanity needs, whose failure prepares us for the ultimate leader and Savior, Jesus. <img src="https://media.babylonbee.com/thumbs/article-10028-1-thumb.jpg"> <p>MURRIETA, CA&mdash;Local wife Amy Walkwell has stocked up on her makeup and beauty supplies once again at her local Ulta store, informing her husband that she had to spend hundreds of dollars right now because the current Ulta sale only happens once a year, 17 times a year. The 17-times-in-a-year opportunity doesn&#39;t come every day, she argued, pointing out that if she didn&#39;t buy her eyeliner, mascara, and whatever the one for the face skin is, she&#39;d have to wait until roughly three weeks from now for the next sale. &quot;We&#39;re saving a ton of money here, and I&#39;ll miss out if I don&#39;t pick this up now,&quot; she said as he dropped her off in front of the store and went to go find a parking spot, where he&#39;d be sitting in his car for roughly an hour. &quot;Really, we&#39;re&nbsp;<em>making&nbsp;</em>money if you think about it. Because if I bought it during any of the 42 days of the year where Ulta isn&#39;t having a sale, I&#39;d have spent at least 20% more.&quot;</p>

Ubuntu!" rel="nofollow">GNOME Is Removing the Ability to Launch Binary Apps from Nautilus - OMG! Ubuntu!</a> &mdash; GNOME developer Carlos Soriano made the commit referenced above.
In it, he reasons that without a desktop on which to place app shortcuts and binaries the express need to launch apps using Nautilus is not as useful as it once was.
After all, the GNOME Shell desktop comes with a full-screen app launcher by default, and a slate of third-party app menu extensions are available.
Apps should be launched from an app launcher, and the file manager should manage files
Plus, for those who can put up with its slow start-up times — which is being worked on this cycle — the GNOME Software store offers launch buttons beside apps you have installed.
“It was [once] common for apps to be delivered in a tarball, nowadays thats out of question,” Soriano says.
“Not only that, but we are moving towards a more sandboxed system, and we should use the standard and system wide support for launching apps based on users choices.”</li><li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00T8OKM98/altispeed-20" title="DMXking ultraDMX Micro USB DMX adapter/dongle: Musical Instruments" rel="nofollow">DMXking ultraDMX Micro USB DMX adapter/dongle: Musical Instruments</a></li><li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00I2QAT64/altispeed-20" title="Chauvet DJ SlimPar 56 LED Slim Par Can Pro RGB Lighting Effects + DMX Cables: Musical Instruments" rel="nofollow">Chauvet DJ SlimPar 56 LED Slim Par Can Pro RGB Lighting Effects + DMX Cables: Musical Instruments</a></li><li><a href="https://sourceforge.net/projects/qlcplus/" title="Q Light Controller Plus download | SourceForge.net" rel="nofollow">Q Light Controller Plus download | SourceForge.net</a></li><li><a href="https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/disk2vhd" title="Disk2vhd - Windows Sysinternals | Microsoft Docs" rel="nofollow">Disk2vhd - Windows Sysinternals | Microsoft Docs</a></li><li><a href="http://portal.altispeed.com/kb/faq.php?id=9" title="Virtual Host Setup" rel="nofollow">Virtual Host Setup</a></li><li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B01FN1YK92/altispeed-20" title="Dell WD15 Monitor Dock 4K with 130W Adapter, USB-C, (450-AFGM, 6GFRT): Computers & Accessories" rel="nofollow">Dell WD15 Monitor Dock 4K with 130W Adapter, USB-C, (450-AFGM, 6GFRT): Computers & Accessories</a></li></ul>

<p>In this video I announce the immediate availability of my themes for
Emacs through the official package archive. I explain what this means
in practice, how the new legal arrangements stand, and talk about my
plans concerning the ongoing development of this project.</p>
<p>The “Modus themes” are my highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They
conform with the WCAG AAA standard for colour contrast accessibility,
which stands for a minimum contrast ratio of 7:1 between the foreground
and background values.</p>
<p>The two themes are:</p>
<ul>
<li><code>modus-operandi-theme</code> (light)</li>
<li><code>modus-vivendi-theme</code> (dark)</li>
</ul>
<p>Here is the link to the <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes">GitLab repo of the Modus themes</a>.</p>
<p>You might want to send your feedback concerning the proposed changes to
<code>diff-mode</code> that I mentioned in the video. If you do not have a GitLab
account, feel free to <a href="https://protesilaos.com/contact/">contact me</a> via email.</p>

<h1 class="title">Nyxt 2 Pre-release 1</h1>
</header>
<p>If the above title was confusing, don't worry, you're not alone :-). We are happy to announce the first pre-release of Nyxt version 2.0.0.</p>
<p>Nyxt 2 is a massive overhaul of the Nyxt 1 series. A lot of effort has been geared towards improving the code quality under the hood which should reflect on the overall user experience with better performance, increased stability and better accessibility.</p>
<p>This is a test release for everyone to try out before the final release. It contains experimental features and some parts are still unfinished. Please feel free to share your feedback on our <a href="https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt/issues">GitHub issue tracker</a>!</p>
<p>Notable highlights:</p>
<ul>
<li>Use the new <code>auto-mode</code> to automatically load a configured set of modes for matching URLs and predicates. For instance, Nyxt can automatically enable proxy-mode when navigating to Wikipedia and disable it otherwise.</li>
<li>Use the new <code>autofill</code> command to insert predefined or computed content in text fields, such as the current date. You can use this to speed up filling of forms.</li>
<li>Support for <code>data-profiles</code>. Data profiles help you customize data separation easily and flexibly, e.g. a &quot;work&quot; instance of Nyxt may use different cookies but the same bookmarks as the &quot;personal&quot; instance.</li>
<li>New <code>--script</code> command line option that can be used in shabangs to write &quot;Nyxt scripts.&quot;</li>
<li>New <code>lisp-repl</code> command to evaluate Lisp, introspect and modify Nyxt while it's running, from the browser itself!</li>
<li>Built-in <code>tutorial</code> and <code>manual</code> commands.</li>
<li>New documentation commands: <code>describe-function</code>, <code>describe-slot</code>, <code>describe-class</code>, <code>describe-key</code>, <code>describe-bindings</code>. These commands allow you to quickly introspect any part of Nyxt.</li>
<li>Improved macOS performance with support for Quartz renderer. No more dependency on XQuartz.</li>
<li>No more D-Bus. We've moved to direct web renderer bindings (leveraging the CFFI library), and the responsiveness of the Nyxt interface is better than ever!</li>
<li>Built-in spell checker/suggestions.</li>
</ul>
<p>For the complete change list, please consult the <a href="https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt/blob/14ad9eb1d835950257d031e78126625546ebe996/documents/CHANGELOG.org#2-pre-release-1">CHANGELOG.org</a> file.</p>
<p>We hope you enjoy these new features, and that they help make you more productive. Thanks for reading :-)</p>

<h1 class="title">Macro edit: democratizing automation</h1>
<p class="author">By John Mercouris</p>
</header>
<p>It is no secret that computers are effective at automation. We use their power to multiply our impact- as an extension of our minds.</p>
<p>Until recently, this power has been largely inaccessible for the vast majority of users. Today, we change this, Nyxt has taken the first steps towards the democratization of automation.</p>
<p>So, what is the first step? Simple automation for everyone. Let me introduce <code>edit-macro</code>. Edit macro allows the user to define a sequence of actions to execute. The user can then save, and reuse their macro whenever they want. Let's go through a simple example demonstrating their power.</p>
<p>To begin, we start with the command <code>edit-macro</code>.</p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/edit-macro.png" /></p>
<p>Upon executing <code>edit-macro</code>, you'll be presented with the macro editor screen.</p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/macro-edit-start.png" /></p>
<p>In this example, we'll be creating a simple macro that prints the current buffer, and then switches to the next one. You can imagine that invoking this macro several times in a row would allow you to quickly print all of your buffers.</p>
<p>Let's start off by giving our macro a name, let's call it <code>print-and-next</code>. After giving it a name, we have to select which commands we want it to execute. To do so, we click &quot;+ Add Command&quot;.</p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/macro-add-command.png" /></p>
<p>We are now presented with a screen that lists all of the commands available in Nyxt. We select a command, press return, and it is added to our command list.</p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/macro-add-print-buffer.png" /></p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/macro-add-print-buffer-confirm.png" /></p>
<p>Now we'll add our next command: <code>switch-buffer-next</code>.</p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/macro-add-switch-buffer-next.png" /></p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/macro-add-switch-buffer-next-confirm.png" /></p>
<p>We are now ready to test! To test press &quot;Evaluate macro&quot;. This will compile our macro and make it runnable from the <code>execute-command</code> menu.</p>
<p><img src="../static/image/article/execute-print-and-next.png" /></p>
<p>If everything works as expected, that's it, we're done! We can use our macro, we can bind to a hotkey, use it in another macro etc. The possibilities are literally endless.</p>
<p>Should we wish to save our macro for future sessions, all we have to do is press &quot;Save macro&quot;. Nyxt will then automatically save our macro into our <code>auto-config.lisp</code> file. If you are curious, here is the code that our macro produces:</p>
<div class="sourceCode" id="print-and-next" data-org-language="lisp"><pre class="sourceCode commonlisp"><code class="sourceCode commonlisp"><a class="sourceLine" id="print-and-next-1" data-line-number="1">(DEFINE-COMMAND-GLOBAL |print-and-next|</a>
<a class="sourceLine" id="print-and-next-2" data-line-number="2"> NIL</a>
<a class="sourceLine" id="print-and-next-3" data-line-number="3"> <span class="st">&quot;User generated macro form&quot;</span></a>
<a class="sourceLine" id="print-and-next-4" data-line-number="4"> (SWITCH-BUFFER-NEXT)</a>
<a class="sourceLine" id="print-and-next-5" data-line-number="5"> (PRINT-BUFFER))</a></code></pre></div>
<p>As you can see, macros are very powerful. That said, there remains a lot of important work to be done: in subsequent variants we hope to introduce branching, variables, and more (without overwhelming the user)! We see the development of this automation interface as an important first step towards the democratization of automation.</p>
<p>We hope you enjoy it, and thanks for reading :-)</p>

<p>On Saturday 2021-10-30 at 13:00 +0300 I did a live stream. The video
was recorded for future reference and is available on this page.</p>
<p>I talked about the impostor syndrome; of how we might seriously think of
ourselves as frauds. My intention was to provide a philosophical
outlook and to outline certain methods we may apply to cope with
impostor syndrome and, perhaps, overcome it.</p>
<p>As you would expect from my other two live streams, much of the
presentation was theoretical and targeted at a general audience. Though
I also described some experiences from my participation in the Emacs
community. Thes did not go into technicalities, but only served as
examples from which we could draw insights about everyday life.</p>
<p>The text of the presentation is reproduced below. It is in Org
notation.</p>
<p>After I concluded my talk, I joined the live chat to answer any
questions and/or to comment on any remarks. Those were about the topic
of the live stream and other subjects related to what I post on my

<pre><code class="language-org">#+TITLE: Live: Impostor syndrome and the Emacs community
#+AUTHOR: Protesilaos Stavrou (https://protesilaos.com)
#+DATE: 2021-10-30
* Introduction
Hello everyone! My name is Protesilaos, also known as "Prot".
In this video I want to talk to you about something that relates to
human relations and which I have discerned in tech-related communities,
such as that of Emacs. This is about how some persons in those
communities may feel about themselves and their contributions. What is
the self-image that they have and which are the associations or thought
processes that might relate to it.
I want to talk to you about the phenomenon of thinking that you are a
fraud, an infamous charlatan who does not really know anything about
the subject matter in question. This is also known as the "impostor
syndrome".
I will approach this topic mostly at the theoretical level and gradually
include some more specific examples, such as references from my
participation in the Emacs community.
The intention is to share with you what the problem can be and discuss
some techniques we may use to ameliorate the pressure and, perhaps,
circumvent the obstacles that our mind puts in front of us.
The first part of this presentation is general, but then I will be a bit
more specific with examples about Emacs and related topics.
The reason I want to talk about this is because I have experienced it in
the past and have a sense that others may also struggle with it.
To be clear and unequivocal: *I am not a professional therapist and this
is not medical advice*. I am just a lay person who is about to say lay
person things.
Recall that this is a live stream. It is being recorded and will be
available for future review. The show notes are on my website:
https://protesilaos.com/codelog/2021-10-29-live-stream-impostor-syndrome-emacs.
As always, I am taking questions from the live chat and will reply to
them once I conclude today's presentation. The questions can be about
the current topic or anything else related to what I post on my website:
https://protesilaos.com.
* What does it mean to feel like a fraud?
This is about your perception. How you think your disposition and your
contributions are interpreted by others. You have this sense of
self-doubt that everything you do is scrutinised by those around you.
You get the idea that they are looking carefully at every single motion
and every single word of yours in search for something erroneous. You
dread that because you believe that if you make a mistake it will expose
your little secret: the fact that you are a fraud. And if that happens,
you fear your whole life will collapse.
Feeling like an impostor is all about what goes on in your mind. People
don't really tell you that you are a fraud. And you have never actually
confirmed that your peers are putting everything you do under the
microscope. There might have been certain cases that made you think
that you may be a fraud, but those have been the exception to the norm.
Or you may have been the victim of abuse, which is no longer about
thikning of yourself as a fraud, but suffering from trauma, which is
different. If this is just about believing that you are incompetent, it
may be that your mind is making a tiger out of a cat, a major problem
out of a minor one.
The triggers for those sentiments are not purely negative. There is a
constructive aspect to them. You are introspective, which is key to
identifying the areas where you can further improve yourself. You are
self-conscious, which is of paramount importance in understanding
yourself in relation to others and, thus, in recognising the others.
And you are questioning yourself, which shows the capacity to avoid
becoming dogmatic about that which you cherish the most: your selfhood.
What is destructive, however, what can cause you harm and hamper your
contributions to the world is how far you take your introspection, your
self-consciousness, your self-doubt. There has to be a balance, a
virtuous midpoint, otherwise you are approaching an extreme state of
affairs that is suboptimal.
As with everything that is not binary in nature, the difference between
poison and medicine is one of degree. The right amount is benign. An
excess supply, or a shortage, is detrimental to your health. Think
about food: no food leads to starvation, too much food can cause death,
while the right amount of food keeps you going.
The same is true for what happens in our mind. The total absence of
introspection, self-consciousness, self-doubt turns you into an
arrogant, foolish, sociopath. But too much introspection makes you lose
touch with the world around you. Too much self-consciousness renders
you self-centred and boosts your confidence about knowing yourself to a
fault. While too much self-doubt forces you into submission, as you can
no longer make basic, practical choices that entail a degree of
uncertainty.
* Hubris: from perfectionism to defeatism
Here I want to introduce a term you either are not familiar with or may
have heard before but did not pay too much attention to. The word is
"hubris", which comes from ancient Greek. Hubris describes the human
condition that has gone past its limits; a condition that has drifted
away from the virtuous midpoint into an extreme state of affairs.
In mythology and ancient tragedy, hubris meant that the gods would
punish the human transgressor, for their excessive cockiness, their
extremism. But we do not need the theological underpinnings of Greek
polytheism to appreciate the value of having a balanced approach to what
we do. We do not have to subscribe to a specific school of thought in
order to recognise facts of life, such as the difference in degree
between poison and medicine.
For those who are struggling with the impostor syndrome, hubris
describes the extreme predicament they find themselves in. And that
condition may be because of another quality that people have:
perfectionism or, else, conscientiousness.
To be a perfectionist, or to be conscientious, is to really care about
what you do to the point where you want to achieve the best results.
Again, this is a good thing to have, especially when considered together
with what we have already covered about being introspective,
self-conscious, and self-critical (self-doubt). Though, as we said
before, when you take your perfectionism or conscientiousness to the
extreme, you start getting adverse results. You commit hubris.
One such adverse result is defeatism and its concomitant sense of
nihilist self-deprecation. This is how it goes: you set yourself up to
deliver on an ambitious project. You put in every ounce of effort that
you can, expecting it to be a runaway success. But as the project
develops, you realise that your work is not perfect. So you keep
postponing the deadline you had set for yourself and eventually get
trapped in a cycle of postponements and reviews, where you always
dismiss what you have achieved as simply not being up to the standard
you had envisioned. Because you had those lofty ambitions, those
unrealisable expectations, you conclude that what you do is in vein.
Instead of recognising your hubris, your excessive perfectionism, you
rationalise your condition as not being fit for the task. So you tell
yourself that you will always fail no matter how hard you try. That is
your defeatism being rationalised as your actuality. And then you take
it a step further and tell yourself how everything you do is totally
useless. That is your defeatism transmogrifying into nihilist
self-deprecation. This is all hubris; hubris writ large. Which calls
for a return to a more balanced approach to life.
* Challenge yourself: what's wrong with being a fraud?
The impostor syndrome can really harm you. It can prove detrimental to
your productivity and it can become deleterious for your sanity. So it
is not to be taken lightly. There are, however, some techniques we may
employ to change the course of things so that we move away from the
extremes and back to a state of mind where we can find the virtuous
midpoint.
One such technique is to turn the accusation of you being a fraud on its
head. Instead of apologising to yourself for being an impostor, take a
deep breath, drink some water, and turn that nihilism of yours
upside-down. Ask yourself what will happen to the world if it actually
believes that I am a charlatan? Let's say that you are writing some
Emacs Lisp code, or you are doing a presentation in a live stream. Take
me, what will happen to me right now if someone watching this thinks
that I am not a philosopher or that I am not this or that? Will the
thoughts of that person stop me from getting enjoyment out of what I do?
Will my body, my mind, my entire being suddenly find no amusement, no
food for the soul, so to speak, in whatever it is I am doing?
So calm down and ask yourself what can go wrong in the world if you
indeed are a fraud? Let's say that I discover this right now: I am not
who I thought I was. I truly am a fraud! Did you watching this lose
something following this revelation? Perhaps you lost your time, but
otherwise it is inconsequential. Was I gaining something from you
before that realisation which will now be lost simply because something
flipped in my mind and I am now supposedly a fraud? No. The only thing
that has changed is a thought in my mind. The world, however, does not
revolve around that thought.
Now you may be thinking about cases where something hinges on your
performance. Let's say that you are a doctor and are saving lives out
there. What happens if you think you are a fraud? We are all doomed
because however bad you think you are, those of us who are not doctors
are definitely worse at what you are doing. And the same principle for
every position where others depend on you. For you to be in that
position, it clearly means that you are not as bad as you think you are.
And then we have activities that are of a more modest nature compared to
saving lives. For example, you are writing Emacs Lisp code and you are
packaging it so that other people may use it as well. Again, what can
possibly go wrong if someone, somewhere gets this idea that you are a
fraud. So what? Nothing happens. But we will revisit this point a bit
later.
Use the nihilism that was contributing to your downfall against your
defeatism. Use it in a constructive way to show the absurdity of
getting bogged down by extreme self-doubt; the absurdity of questioning
yourself to death, so to speak.
* Let the ideal be the guide of the good, not its enemy
Another technique that we can employ is to reconsider the relationship
between the ideal and the actual. We said that the impostor syndrome
can be an inwardly corrupt perfectionism or a kind of conscientiousness
gone wrong. And the reason behind that may be how we set ourselves up
for failure by misunderstanding what the ideal actually represents.
What we want is for the ideal to be our guide in life. We wish to
approximate it and emulate it as much as possible, so that what we do
gets better and better. What we should not do, though, is compare the
actual to the ideal only so that we may discard what we have. Because
if we keep doing that, we will simply be left with nothing. The ideal
is unattainable because it is a mental construct, an absolute that is
not instantiated in some particular case. We can never attain the
absolute. We can only ever do something that is within our means or,
generally, framed by the factors that govern the prevailing conditions
in our life.
Let's think about this situation by means of a thought experiment. The
point is to not be so abstract all the time. Suppose that there exist
two versions of Protesilaos in the world. One is my current self right
here, and the other is a 20-year-old version of me. Let's call the
latter "young Prot" and I am, in this case, "old Prot" (hey, I'm 33!).
So young Prot has been following old Prot's publications. And young
Prot has all those ideas that he wants to write about and put them on a
personal website. Young Prot wants to become old Prot and sets out to
produce those publications that will go into his new website. But young
Prot is beset on all sides by this persistent doubt that he is not good
enough. Imagine that we can read his mind. It goes like this:
#+begin_quote
I want to set up a website and write about all those topics that
interest me. This Protesilaos fellow is inspiring me to do so. Maybe I
should even send him my works. But who am I trying to deceive? I am a
nobody with nothing to show for. Whereas look at him: he has written
about all those subjects... plus, he has this luscious beard! [joke!] I
better sit here and accept that I am incompetent.
#+end_quote
What do you think will happen to young Prot is he maintains that
attitude? Will he ever grow up to become old Prot? No, because he is
setting himself up for failure. He is comparing his current state to a
desired state that he has misunderstood and he is misusing that ideal to
belittle himself. What young Prot needs to do is simply give it a try
and play to the beat of his own being; follow his heart, as they say.
Ignore the comparisons. Blot out everything that prevents the actual
from becoming good and the good from becoming better. The ideal must be
our guide, the lodestar we look up to find our way in the wilderness.
It is not our enemy.
* Learn to accept counterpoints gracefully
The other technique that can help is to become more dialectical. Don't
cling on to your position and try to win the argument. I have written
about this issue at length, though here I want to put it in concrete
terms by using an example with Emacs. I will show some code, but even if
you don't understand it, please bear with me as the point is general.
[ The Dialectician's Ethos:
https://protesilaos.com/books/2020-09-30-ethos-dialectic/ ]
A couple of days ago I was working on refining a user option in my
=modus-themes=. What had to be done, was to compare the elements of two
lists in order to find the first match between them. I did not know how
to do it in a clean way, so I wrote some ugly code which, nonetheless,
did return the values I was looking for. The function was this:
#+begin_src emacs-lisp
(defun modus-themes--heading-weight (list)
(let (weight)
(setq weight
(mapcar (lambda (elt)
(member elt modus-themes--heading-weights))
list))
(setq weight (delq nil weight))
(setq weight (caar weight))))
#+end_src
You would pass to it a list of symbols and it would compare it to
another list: the =modus-themes--heading-weights=. So I committed that.
The person with whom we were discussing this new addition, Christian
Tietze, told me about a more efficient way to accomplish the same task
by simply using the =cl-intersection= function which compares two lists
directly. So I went with Christian's suggestion. Then Daniel Mendler
pointed out that this use of =cl-intersection= required its library at
runtime, so we could opt for another approach that would have no such
dependency. The short version of the story is that I was wrong and
those folks showed me how to do it right.
My attitude was always cooperative and open-minded. When someone
demonstrates that I am wrong, I am happy to concede the point and I am
eager to follow their thesis. And that is because I believe that when
someone shows you the error of your ways, they are actually doing you a
service. They are helping you free yourself from that falsehood, that
incorrect belief, that bad technique, etc.
If I had felt attacked by Christian and Daniel, if I was insecure by
picturing myself as a fraud, we wouldn't have the better code, plus I
would be feeling inadequate and a complete idiot. Maybe I would want to
hide somewhere, instead of talking about it here. It would be horrible.
* People don't judge you for trivialities
The truth of the matter is that we sometimes worry too much about what
others may think. Our mind is magnifying the problem by weaving all
those imaginary scenaria together in one grand narrative that ultimately
functions against our sanity.
This is not to downplay the significance of the problem, nor to suggest
some simplistic and generic cliché of "get up and do it". It does not
work that way. What I am saying here is that everything can benefit
from a more refined technique. Our thinking processes are no different.
If we apply the right method and are patient about it, we stand a better
chance of disentangling our thoughts, of putting them in order, and of
not falling into traps that we have set up for ourselves.
You may be thinking at this point a bit like young Prot in my thought
experiment earlier. "Oh, but I am not strong enough". My argument is
that you can improve yourself by changing your method. It all is a
matter of attitude, of how you approach things. As for not being
"strong enough", you may have heard about the ancient mathematician
called Archimedes. He wanted to explain to his peers how leverage
works. So he claimed that there is a certain point to which we can
apply sufficient pressure in order to move large objects. And he
exaggerated by claiming that he can move the Earth, if the right point
exists, upon which to apply the appropriate leverage. If we want to
draw the general insight from this claim and use it for our purposes
here, we can say that strength is a function of technique. Archimedes
could move massive objects with the correct method, not with his sheer
power. The same is true for us: we can do seemingly impossible things
by changing our disposition.
Finally, I wish to conclude this presentation with a few words about my
participation in the Emacs community. As you may know, I have been
using Emacs since the summer of 2019. I am not a programmer and had no
knowledge of Lisp when I started with Emacs. But that did not stop me
from trying to get better. I took baby steps and started learning my
way around. Then I began writing my super simple Elisp tweaks. Over
time I got better at it and am always looking forward to learn something
new.
During all this time, the Emacs community has been welcoming. Was I
always good with Elisp? No, absolutely not. Was I always insightful
about how to use Emacs? Again, the answer is firmly negative. So a
defeatist back in 2019, let's call him "young Prot" once again, would
have stayed away from this milieu without even trying. Because young
Prot would have imagined how hostile and elitist the Emacs community is,
with their niche program and all its weird methods.
But I tried. And I learnt that people don't judge you for trivialities.

<p>I just published version <code>0.5.0</code> of the Modus themes. These are my
highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They conform with the WCAG AAA
standard for colour contrast accessibility (a minimum contrast ratio of
7:1 between the foreground and background values). You can find the
packages on MELPA:</p>
<ul>
<li><code>modus-operandi-theme</code> (light)</li>
<li><code>modus-vivendi-theme</code> (dark)</li>
</ul>
<hr />
<p>This release contains support for several new packages and lots of
refinements to existing ones. A lot of work went into making the
themes more robust by reviewing the inheritance of styles from one
face group to another (in general, the <code>:inherit</code> property should not
be used frivolously). Several subtle changes were made to the colour
palette of both themes to ensure consistency, enable more possible
combinations, and avoid potential ambiguity under certain potential
circumstances.</p>
<p>Overall, this release gives me confidence that the themes have reached
a fairly stable state. What follows is an overview of the changes
since version 0.4.0 (2020-01-02).</p>
<p>Added support for:</p>
<ul>
<li><code>equake</code></li>
<li><code>flymake</code></li>
<li><code>focus</code></li>
<li><code>fountain</code> (aka <code>fountain-mode</code>)</li>
<li><code>git-lens</code></li>
<li><code>git-timemachine</code></li>
<li><code>hi-fill-column</code></li>
<li><code>highlight-blocks</code></li>
<li><code>info-colors</code></li>
<li><code>lsp-mode</code></li>
<li><code>lsp-ui</code></li>
<li><code>proced</code> (built-in)</li>
<li><code>regexp-builder</code> (built-in)</li>
<li><code>suggest</code></li>
</ul>
<p>Refinements:</p>
<ul>
<li>The header line uses its own dedicated colours. Several changes
were made in <code>eww</code>, <code>info</code>, <code>elfeed</code>, <code>magit</code>, <code>flycheck</code> to make
sure that any accent value that appears there conforms with the
overarching accessibility objective of the Modus themes (contrast
ratio of &gt;= 7:1, else WCAG AAA).</li>
<li><code>ivy</code> no longer uses a box style for the current line, as that was
not always reliable. Appropriate colours are used instead.</li>
<li><code>org-mode</code> blocks use a foreground value that distinguishes their
opening and closing tags from source code comments.</li>
<li>The <code>org-ellipsis</code> face was configured to always inherit the looks
of its respective heading or element, rather than have its own
excessive styling.</li>
<li><code>paren-match</code> has colours that are designed specifically for it.
This is done to retain their utility while making sure they are not
mistaken for some other type of feedback.</li>
<li><code>magit</code> has explicit styles for the mode line process indicators,
instead of inheriting from another face. The intention is to use
foreground values that are designed specifically for use on the mode
line (the minimum contrast ratio requirement).</li>
<li><code>erc</code> faces have been thoroughly reviewed in the interest of better
usability. Its mode line indicators now use appropriate colours.</li>
<li>The faces of the <code>messages</code> library have been thoroughly reviewed.
This affects various email interfaces, but also <code>elfeed</code> entry
metadata headings.</li>
<li><code>whitespace-mode</code> no longer has a newline character that stands out.
That kind of emphasis was not necessary, given that the symbol used
is a dollar sign, which is already far more visible than a mid dot.</li>
<li><code>font-lock</code> (generic syntax highlighting) has better colour
combinations for regexp grouping constructs.</li>
<li><code>rainbow-delimiters</code> was given its missing base error face.</li>
<li><code>git-commit</code> comment action uses a slightly different foreground
value than before to better match its context.</li>
<li><code>isearch</code> and <code>query-replace</code> use colours that properly denote each
actions utility.</li>
<li><code>visual-regexp</code> has been reviewed to make the matching groups more
distinct from each other.</li>
<li><code>occur</code> and any other buffer that relies on the <code>match</code> face can now
benefit from the new colour combinations, in that its results cannot
be confused for the active <code>isearch</code> or <code>query-replace</code> or even
their lazily highlighted results (or, indeed, of any other search
tool).</li>
<li><code>company</code> uses faces for its search feedback that are consistent
with other search metaphors.</li>
<li>Emacs 27s new <code>:extend</code> property is only implemented where
necessary (note that the latest release is version 26.3).</li>
</ul>
<hr />

modus-themes</a>.</p>

<p>When you are reading an article in a webpage, you come across an idea
and want to org-capture the words/sentences. What do you do?</p>
<h2 id="naive-way">Naive way</h2>
<p>An intuitive way is highlight the content you want to capture, copy it,
switch to Emacs, run <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">org-capture</code> and yank it there.</p>
<p>Would it be nice if our browser sends content to <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">org-capture</code> directly
with a shortcut?</p>
<h2 id="org-protocol-and-custom-js">Org-protocol and custom JS</h2>
<p><a href="https://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/org-protocol.html">Org-protocol</a>
is the backbone here. The basic ides is
navigate to a link with the org-capture protocol header and the OS figures
out Emacs is the app to open it.</p>
<p>Now that the underlying mechanism is there, our next step is figure out the
script that drives it.</p>
<p><a href="https://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/org-protocol.html#orgb7ef958">Org-protocol docs about Mac OS
X</a> is
a bit out of date, but it has hints about the Javascript logic:</p>
<div class="language-js highlighter-rouge"><div class="highlight"><pre class="highlight"><code>
<span class="nb">document</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">location</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">href</span> <span class="o">=</span> <span class="dl">'</span><span class="s1">org-protocol://capture://</span><span class="dl">'</span> <span class="o">+</span>
<span class="nb">encodeURIComponent</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="nx">location</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">href</span><span class="p">)</span> <span class="o">+</span> <span class="dl">'</span><span class="s1">/</span><span class="dl">'</span> <span class="o">+</span>
<span class="nb">encodeURIComponent</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="nb">document</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">title</span><span class="p">)</span> <span class="o">+</span> <span class="dl">'</span><span class="s1">/</span><span class="dl">'</span> <span class="o">+</span>
<span class="nb">encodeURIComponent</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="nb">window</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">getSelection</span><span class="p">());</span>
</code></pre></div></div>
<p>From here, it becomes the question of how to run the custom JS code.</p>
<p>There are two ways:</p>
<h2 id="method-1-bookmarklet">Method 1: Bookmarklet</h2>
<p>Use
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookmarklet">Bookmarklet</a> and make it
a button in the bookmark bar</p>
<p><img alt="Create a bookmarklet with custom JS" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/junjizhi/emacstil.com@main/uPic/jLNztM.png" /></p>
<p>The JS code is similar but has to be wrapped with a <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">javascript</code> prefix:</p>
<div class="language-js highlighter-rouge"><div class="highlight"><pre class="highlight"><code><span class="nx">javascript</span><span class="p">:(</span><span class="kd">function</span><span class="p">(){</span><span class="nb">document</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">location</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">href</span><span class="o">=</span><span class="dl">'</span><span class="s1">org-protocol://capture://</span><span class="dl">'</span><span class="o">+</span><span class="nb">encodeURIComponent</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="nx">location</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">href</span><span class="p">)</span><span class="o">+</span><span class="dl">'</span><span class="s1">/</span><span class="dl">'</span><span class="o">+</span><span class="nb">encodeURIComponent</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="nb">document</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">title</span><span class="p">)</span><span class="o">+</span><span class="dl">'</span><span class="s1">/</span><span class="dl">'</span><span class="o">+</span><span class="nb">encodeURIComponent</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="nb">window</span><span class="p">.</span><span class="nx">getSelection</span><span class="p">());})();</span>
</code></pre></div></div>
<p>With it, you can highlight some text on a page and hit the bookmark on
your toolbar. It will send to your org capture buffer right away</p>
<h2 id="method-2-use-shortkeys">Method 2: Use <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/addon/shortkeys/">ShortKeys</a></h2>
<p>You can assign a shortcut to run custom JS</p>
<p><img alt="Shortkeys settings" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/junjizhi/emacstil.com@main/uPic/CNeplc.png" /></p>
<p>Now I can highlight any text on a weg, then press
<code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">ctrl-i</code>{.verbatim}.</p>
<p>Boom, it shows in the beautiful org-capture buffer.</p>
<blockquote>
<p><strong><em>NOTE:</em></strong> <a href="https://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/org-protocol.html">Org-protocol</a> supports <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">org-store-link</code> and <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">org-remember</code> URLs as well. You can build URLs with the similar JS code.</p>

<p>After using <a href="https://github.com/toshism/org-super-links">super-links</a> for almost a year, custom IDs and backlinks became an inseparable part of my workflow. Its the only part Ive adopted from the whole Zettelkasten/org-roam craze. Org-modes built-in custom IDs dont make sense, so I decided to create better custom IDs and teach myself some Emacs-lisp in the process.</p>
<p>My idea was to contain the buffers name with the current date (ISO formatted) in the ID. For example, if Im looking at the buffer Im writing this post in: taonaw.2021-12-19.1730.</p>
<p>Heres the process I followed.</p>
<h2 id="getting-iso-style-time">Getting ISO style time</h2>
<p>This is how I get the time in the desired format, like 2021-12-19.1730 (17:30 is 5:30 PM).</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">((<span style="color: #a6e22e;">format-time-string</span> <span style="color: #e6db74;">"%Y-%m-%-d.%H%M"</span>(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">current-time</span>))
</code></pre></div><p>There are two functions here:</p>
<ol>
<li><code>current-time</code> gets the current time in Emacs. Kind of. It returns the time in seconds since 01/01/1970 (the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix%5Ftime">Unix Epoch</a>.)</li>
<li><code>format-time-string</code> formats the current time into something more human-readable, in this case, ISO format. The operators above are common across various programming languages. From the help text on <code>format-time-string</code>:</li>
</ol>
<blockquote>
<p>%Y is the year, %y within the century, %C the century.</p>
<p>%G is the year corresponding to the ISO week, %g within the century.</p>
<p>%m is the numeric month.</p>
<p>%b and %h are the locales abbreviated month name, %B the full name.
(%h is not supported on MS-Windows.)</p>
<p>%d is the day of the month, zero-padded, %e is blank-padded.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>…and so on. %H for hours, %M (capital M) for minutes.</p>
<h2 id="getting-it-into-a-variable">Getting it into a Variable</h2>
<p>In order to do something with our date above, we need to assign it a variable. For this we use the function <code>Let</code>.</p>
<p><code>Let</code> sets variables and their values within the list it creates. The variables do not exist outside of this list. Whats a list? well, think of it as a fence made from parentheses.</p>
<p>For example: <code>let ((dog)(cat)(mouse))</code> creates three variables. We also assign them a value at the same time: <code>let ((dog woof)(cat meow)(mouse squeak))</code>. <code>Let</code> is usually what we want to use in a function because the values are unique to that function. In our case, that would be the date we created above. This is how it looks like:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(let ((timestring (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">format-time-string</span> <span style="color: #e6db74;">"%Y-%m-%-d.%H%M"</span>(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">current-time</span>)))))
</code></pre></div><p>we create only one variable, timestring, and then we use the piece of code from above to assign a value to it. Look closely at the parentheses, and the order makes sense:</p>
<ol>
<li>Use the function <code>current-time</code>.</li>
<li>Use <code>format-time-string</code> on the result of this function to format the time into a yyyy-mm-dd.hhmm.</li>
<li>Store this string we just created (the value) in a variable, “timestring”</li>
</ol>
<p>In order to be sure we have the value we want inside timestring, we can ask Emacs to display it in our messages buffer, with <code>message timestring</code>.</p>
<p>The end result looks like this:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(let ((timestring (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">format-time-string</span> <span style="color: #e6db74;">"%Y-%m-%-d.%H%M"</span>(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">current-time</span>))))
(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">message</span> timestring))
</code></pre></div><p>Why do we need double parentheses after the <code>let</code> ? It doesnt look like it makes any difference…?</p>
<p>Remember the lists from our example. <code>Let</code> is meant to be used for a couple of items at once. Emacs doesnt care if we have one item or a hundred: the way we mark them is the same. Since each item in the list is marked with its own parentheses, timestring gets its own pair. Look closely and you will see that timestrings parentheses end after the <code>format-time-string</code> function; the next one belongs to <code>message timestring</code>.</p>
<p>Lists are important in Emacs-Lisp. As a matter of fact, Thats what its name stands for: LISt Processing language. Its right there in <a href="https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html%5Fnode/elisp/Lisp-History.html">the manual</a>.</p>
<p>It took me some time to understand the logic behind it all (with additional extra help), but at the end, you can see it in action.</p>
<h2 id="getting-the-file--buffer--name">Getting the File (Buffer) Name</h2>
<p>To add the buffers name to the ID we need a different function, <code>buffer-file-name</code>. Since well be working with files, well also need <a href="https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html%5Fnode/elisp/File-Name-Components.html">file-name and its components</a>. Before we dive in, its important to understand how Emacs “understands” files. From the help text:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Emacs considers a file name as having two main parts: the directory name part, and the nondirectory part (or file name within the directory). Either part may be empty. Concatenating these two parts reproduces the original file name.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Since were just interested in the file without the path or the extension, we had to clean it up a bit<a class="footnote-ref" href="https://helpdeskheadesk.net/tags/emacs/index.xml#fn:1">1</a>.</p>
<p>Heres the code, explanation follows:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(let ((filename (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">file-name-nondirectory</span> (file-name-sans-extension (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">buffer-file-name</span>)))))
(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">message</span> filename))
</code></pre></div><p>We already know about <code>let</code>. Here, were creating a variable named “filename” and giving it a value through these functions, by the order of the parentheses:</p>
<ol>
<li><code>buffer-file-name</code> does exactly what the name implies, gives you the file that belongs to the buffer youre visiting, complete with a full path.</li>
<li>First part of “cleaning” the name is on the second level, <code>file-name-sans-extension</code>, which is also pretty straightforward: it gets read of the extension of the file.</li>
<li>Next, <code>file-name-nondirectory</code> gives out the name of the file without the directory its in. This finishes the “cleaning” and leaves us with just the name of the file without its extension and without the directory.</li>
<li>The name of the file name without the directory and extension is stored in “filename”.</li>
<li>Like before, to verify we have the right value, we print the variable we created in the messages buffer.</li>
</ol>
<h2 id="connecting-the-two-variables">Connecting the two Variables</h2>
<p>Since we want to get a value that connects the files name with the
date, we need to connect our variables: filename + timestring.</p>
<p>We already know that <code>let</code> creates lists, so we will build a new <code>let</code> that contains both “filename” and “timestring,” using the code above.</p>
<p>We then need to connect them together into a new string, the filename + timestring part. We do that with the <code>concat</code> function.</p>
<p>the code:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(let ((filename (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">file-name-nondirectory</span> (file-name-sans-extension (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">buffer-file-name</span>))))
(timestring (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">format-time-string</span> <span style="color: #e6db74;">"%Y-%m-%d.%H%M.%S"</span>(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">current-time</span>))))
(let ((ID (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">concat</span> filename <span style="color: #e6db74;">"."</span> timestring)))
(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">message</span> ID)))
</code></pre></div><p>Lots of parentheses which need to be followed carefully. Emacs has a few solutions for this, like <code>show-paran-mode</code>.</p>
<p>The first <code>let</code> opens up with the instruction above, but instead of closing the <code>let</code> after <code>buffer-file-name</code> like we did before, we open another <code>let</code> inside the existing one. This <code>let</code> creates a new variable, “ID,” which in turn is getting value from the <code>concat</code> function. The concat takes filename, adds a period at the end of it, and then adds timestring at the end. This gets us what we want.</p>
<p>When I look at the function now and follow the parentheses, an order emerges. Can you see it? It starts with <code>buffer-file-name</code> and <code>current-time</code> simultaneously, and follows an order of procedures all the way to <code>message ID</code>.</p>
<h2 id="making-it-all-work">Making it All Work</h2>
<p>Now that we have both parts in place working together, we need to “wrap” the code in a function, so we can call it and use it:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(defun filename_ID()
(interactive)
(let ((head (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">file-name-nondirectory</span> (file-name-sans-extension (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">buffer-file-name</span>))))
(tail (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">format-time-string</span> <span style="color: #e6db74;">"%Y-%m-%d.%H%M.%S"</span>(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">current-time</span>))))
(let ((filename (<span style="color: #a6e22e;">concat</span> head <span style="color: #e6db74;">"."</span> tail)))
(<span style="color: #a6e22e;">message</span> filename)))
)
</code></pre></div><p>Heres what was added:</p>
<p><code>defun</code> is how we define a function in Emacs, followed by a name: filname_ID in this case.</p>
<p><code>interactive</code> is a special function part (per the help text, this is actually a deceleration. I am not sure yet how this compares to a function, so if you have an idea, feel free to let me know) which allows us to call the function later. In our case, we want to store this function in Emacs' configuration so that we can call it later on when its time to create a custom ID.</p>
<h2 id="using-in-capture-next-steps">Using in Capture: Next Steps</h2>
<p>When I wanted to use this function inside my capture templates, I encountered a problem: the capture buffer does not have a file associated with it, so the function does not work. Even if we were to use <code>buffer-name</code> (see footnotes), this will still not work well: the capture templates use an “inbox” file, which is a temporary location. I want the ID of the headers to reflect their final position, like my wiki.org or weekly files such as 21_50.org.</p>
<p>To get around this problem I started exploring the idea of using a function as a target pointer for my capture templates, and found out something interesting: the target in capture templates is usually defined as a path, such as <code>~/Documents/Org-files/</code> or similar. However, you dont <em>have</em> to. You can put in a name of a variable you assign a value of a path.</p>
<p>For example, I can set a path using the following <a class="footnote-ref" href="https://helpdeskheadesk.net/tags/emacs/index.xml#fn:2">2</a>:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(setq capture-path <span style="color: #e6db74;">"~/Documents/Org-files/tasks.org"</span>)
</code></pre></div><p>Later, in the capture template, all I have to do is something like this:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><code class="language-emacs-lisp">(<span style="color: #e6db74;">"t"</span> <span style="color: #e6db74;">"task"</span> entry (file+headline capture-path <span style="color: #e6db74;">"Tasks"</span>) <span style="color: #e6db74;">"** TODO %? %^g\n"</span>)
</code></pre></div><p>to create a task as a secondary header under my “Tasks” heading inside the tasks.org file. In turn, this allows creating another function that could define the target dynamically. In my case, I could use something similar to what we did earlier with timestring to generate a <code>yy_mm</code>.org value for the variable I will use later as a target. Seems like I have some more brainstorming to do.</p>
<h2 id="footnotes">Footnotes</h2>
<section class="footnotes">

<p>As I was writing this post, looking into the help documents, I realized there are better functions to use here: <code>buffer-name</code> will return the name of the buffer, which works even if the buffer does not have a file. <code>file-name-base</code> will give out the name of the file without the path and without the extension without the need to “clean it up.” Im glad I went through the steps above though as a learning experience. <a class="footnote-backref" href="https://helpdeskheadesk.net/tags/emacs/index.xml#fnref:1">↩︎</a></p>

<p>Notice that we use <code>setq</code> here. Unlike <code>let</code>, <code>setq</code> sets a variable that remains beyond the immediate expression it was called in. <p>When <a href="https://metaredux.com/posts/2021/10/26/clj-refactor-3-0.html">clj-refactor 3.0</a> was
released, I promised you that the release of CIDER 1.2 wasnt far
behind. However, an entire month has passed since then and CIDER 1.2 is still
brewing. Turned out there was more work to be done than I expected, thats why I
decided to provide a short progress update.</p>
<p>Several things contributed to the delay. Heres a brief rundown in no particular order:</p>
<ul>
<li>nREPL 0.9 was delayed a bit by some problems weve discovered with the new Unix socket transport. The problems have been addressed and I expect that well finalize nREPL 0.9 in the next week or so.</li>
<li>Due to the nREPL issues mentioned above, we still havent added support for the new Unix socket transport to CIDER.</li>
<li>Theres some cleanup work that has to be done in Orchard with respect to switching
from <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">dynapath</code> to <a href="https://github.com/clojure-emacs/enrich-classpath">enrich-classpath</a> for automatically adding Java sources and Javadoc to the classpath. That cleanup is optional for this particular release, but Id rather do it sooner rather than later.</li>
<li>I want us to support properly <a href="https://github.com/babashka/nbb">nbb</a> in CIDER 1.2. This requires some changes to the ClojureScript bootstrap logic in CIDER, as <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">nbb</code>
is a native Node.js implementation that works differently from all the ClojureScript REPLs were currently supporting (notably you dont need to evaluate any code in a Clojure REPL to “upgrade” it to a ClojureScript REPL).</li>
<li>I still havent submitted CIDER and its dependencies to <a href="https://elpa.nongnu.org/nongnu/">NonGNU ELPA</a>, so that people would be able to install CIDER out-of-the-box on Emacs 28.</li>
<li>Ive been crazy busy at work, which limited the amount of time I could allocate to CIDER and friends.</li>
</ul>
<p>In light of everything listed above, right now Im aiming to release CIDER 1.2
around Christmas. Note that the current CIDER snapshot is in a pretty good shape
overall and you can upgrade to it without any concerns about the stability
issues.</p>
<p>If you want to know more about the current state of affairs, please check out
this <a href="https://github.com/clojure-emacs/cider/issues/3090">meta ticket</a>, which
tracks all the remaining work. As usual any help with the outstanding tasks
will be greatly appreciated!</p>
<p>To wrap up on a positive note - in the mean time we released <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">clj-refactor</code> 3.1 and 3.2 with a bunch of small improvements!
We might be moving a bit too slow at times, but were always moving forward!</p>

<p>In this screen cast I demonstrate the basics of BSPWM (Binary Space
Partitioning Window Manager). This is a tiling window manager that
I use on my Debian GNU/Linux machine. It is an integral part of my
custom desktop session.</p>
<p>For the underlying code base, refer to <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/dotfiles">my
dotfiles</a>. The more
adventurous among you can also have a look at an older article of mine
on <a href="https://protesilaos.com/codelog/how-to-bspwm-debian-sid/">how to get my setup on Debian
Sid</a> (though this will not give you
the most up-to-date version of my dotfiles—I intend to have a new guide
in time for Debian 10).</p>

<h1 class="title">Nyxt 2 Pre-release 2</h1>
</header>
<p>We are happy to announce the second pre-release of Nyxt version 2.0.0. If you missed the previous pre-release announcement, see <a href="https://nyxt.atlas.engineer/article/release-2-pre-release-1.org">here</a>.</p>
<ul>
<li><p>New startup page.</p></li>
<li><p>New &quot;common settings&quot; page. A button was added to configure any slot in the class description buffers. See <a href="https://nyxt.atlas.engineer/article/common-settings.org">this article</a> for more details.</p></li>
<li><p>New <code>nosound-mode</code> to mute individual buffers.</p></li>
<li><p>New <code>search-selection</code> command.</p>
<p>It allows to query the highlighted text with a given search engine. It is particularly useful for dictionaries.</p></li>
<li><p>Puny-encoded URLs are now human-readable.</p></li>
<li><p>The <code>M-i</code> binding toggles the transparency of element hints.</p></li>
<li><p>New session dumping commands, namely <code>store-session-by-name</code>, <code>restore-session-by-name</code> and <code>replace-session-by-name</code>.</p></li>
</ul>
<p>For the complete change list, please consult the <a href="https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt/blob/2-pre-release-2/documents/CHANGELOG.org#2-pre-release-2">CHANGELOG.org</a> file.</p>
<p>We hope you enjoy these new features, and that they help make you more productive. Thanks for reading :-)</p>
