Pastors have been using other preacher's material for years. When I was growing up, preachers would regularly quote Billy Graham, Vance Pittman, and Charles Spurgeon. They would also throw in a quote from their favorite childhood preacher or seminary professor. This was common and even expected. Preachers steal lines from each other all the time. If you are ever in a conversation with a preacher and say something witty, the preacher in the group will shout out, "That will preach!" When you hear that, you know your line has been stolen.

I have friends who are professional speakers who charge several thousand dollars per speech. When I talk to any of them, they always feel sorry for me. What they do is prepare four or five very good speeches and give those speeches to different audiences. Pastors preach to the same congregation week after week. According to my speaking friends it's a lot easier to find a new audience than it is to write a new speech.

This may be a news flash for those of you who sit in the pews every week, but preaching is hard. Good preaching is harder. Great preaching is almost impossible.

Preparing a sermon takes a lot of time. The rule of thumb is one hour of preparation for every minute you speak. it's not hard to find something to say. There is always more to say than you can include in one sermon. The hardest part is crafting what has been learned in research into a form that can be heard and remembered by the congregation. The Scripture has to be explained, the context given, and an application made to the congregation's life, and all of this has to be done within the limits of an ever-shrinking attention span.

Churches would do well to protect the sermon preparation time needed ...

Tip of the Week: Create a Full Backup Image of an SD Card for a Raspberry Pi

There are many ways to accomplish a full SD card backup image but we’re going to show you one of the easiest:

First take the SD card out of your Pi

Before you insert your SD card into your PC run the command:

df

or you can use sudo fdisk -l

This command will list out all your current drives.

Next insert the SD card from the Pi and run the ‘df’ command once more.

Now you’ll be able to see the drive path assigned to the SD card ex: /dev/mmcblk01 and 02.

TIP: if you don’t see any changes interact with the drive in your file manager and then run the command again in the terminal

Finally, run this command:

sudo dd bs=4M if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=MyPi.img

replacing the /dev/mmcblk0 with the path your PC assigned your SD card.

Note we didn’t designate the 1 or 2 on the end we just wrote the path up to the mmcblk0.

That’s it. Now you’ve made a complete backup image of your SD card that you can restore to another SD card in case of corruption or loss.

This is our first episode in our new series on the theme of Justice in the Bible. When most of us hear the term "justice" we think of courtrooms, judges and cops. Some of us might think of biblical justice as “Gods Judgement”.
What did the Hebrews believe justice looked like? And what was the biblical vision for a “just society?”

In the first part of the conversation (0-22:50) Tim outlines where the words “Justice” and “Righteousness” come from in the Bible and what they meant in their original context. The guys speculate about why every person seems to have an ingrained idea of “fairness”.

Tim shares three common perspectives of Justice from a Harvard professor (Brian Sandel) book Justice: Whats the Right Thing to Do?
Justice is Maximizing Welfare
Justice is Respect of Individual Freedom
Justice is Promoting Virtue

In the second part of the show (22:51-44:45)
Tim outlines the famous verse in Micah “do justice, love mercy” and what that verse originally meant to Hebrews. The guys talk about the differences between retributive justice and restorative justice.
Tim shares the prophets ideas of the quartet of the vulnerable: widows, orphans, immigrants, the poor.

Finally, (44:50-end) the guys discuss the story of the Hebrew Exodus, and how that story framed many images in the Bible about justice.

I can think of very few contexts in this hurried great reset (to assume the urgency of Schwab & Malleret 2020) where we have the reflective/reflexive privilege to focus on the meaning/ethos of our digital tools. Such an opportunity is thanks to the EmacsConf2021 organizers and support team.

Intro Time to make a new daily event for the next 90 days, but it shouldnt have weekends. Most of these steps become muscle memory after getting used to emacs macro power in orgmode files, sql dumps, dired find-and-replace, text formatting, YAML/XML/HTML/JSON/EDN tailoring, etc. Its the speed and flexibility of this method that shines, allowing for solutions to very specific problems, or just nice custom orgmode agenda entries in this case.

Welcome to DLN Xtend Episode 15. This time, some acquaintances of Nate have asked him for help getting started with Linux and helping his son with an electronics engineering course. Eric goes deeper into Linux audio with JACK and Reaper.

We thank DigitalOcean for sponsoring DLN Xtend. DigitalOcean offers the simplest, most developer-friendly cloud platform. Its optimized to make managing and scaling apps easy with an intuitive API, multiple storage options, integrated firewalls, load balancers and so much more. You can get all this plus access to their world-class customer support for as low as $5 per month. DigitalOcean also has 2,000 cloud-agnostic tutorials to help you stay up to date with the latest open source software, languages, and frameworks. Get started on Digital Ocean for 2 Months FREE with a $100 credit by going to do.co/dln.

Dalton Durst from the UBports project was a guest host on Destination Linux. They discussed the PinePhone Braveheart edition and how UBports was progressing on the device. We, of course, couldn't be happier about the prospect of a Linux smartphone.

On the Ask Noah show, Noah doesn't see a place for rolling release distros. We disagree and think they serve a need just as fixed release distributions do.

Jason Evangehlo of Linux for Everyone covers the negativity surrounding proprietary software and dual booting. It's an attitude that bothers us as well.

That's all for this week.
