I have an ext4 filesystem. An important directory with its file have been overwritten by a 'more recent' one despite the older file being more up to date, and I am trying to recover the previous version. ext4magic in live system does find an inode corresponding to the directory overwritten (I suppose the filesystem just delinked the inode and relinked it with the new data), however since it has not been deleted in the journal, it refuse to restore it and consider everything fine - but it is not.

Is there any other tool that may recover the directory and its file from the directory inode number ? (Since I have it with ext4magic). Is there any other forensic tool that may be of help ?

Note : I shutdown quickly after the error and right now I am doing a copy of the block in the live system, so the image is preserved.

   submitted by /u/TheSleepyMachine
[link] [comments]

In this screen cast I demonstrate a couple of ways of storing and
restoring window layouts in Emacs:

The one involves
winner-mode
, which keeps a record of window and
buffer changes, allowing you to go back and forth in this history.

The other uses a couple of functions provided by
ivy
to store any
window layout and to call it at any point in time using a search
interface.

This video builds on my previous entry on the topic of buffer and
window management in
Emacs.

And here is my own config file, in case you are interested:

In this episode, the guys continue their discussion of the law with a look at the prophets. The prophetic books in the Bible are an interesting follow up to the Torah. The prophets seemed to really be getting at Gods heart behind the law, and they were desperate to see Israel come out of their rebellion. Tim and Jon will wrap up their discussion by looking at Jesus response to the law. He was the answer to Old Testament prophecies, but he didnt come to get rid of the law, Jesus came to fulfill it. As Jesus followers, we have to wrestle with what this means for us.

In the first part of the episode (00:56-12:18), the guys talk about Jeremiah and Ezekiels response to Israels disobedience. They warned of consequences to rebellion, but their primary message was the radical heart change that needed to take place.

In the next part of the episode (12:33-21:30), Tim and Jon talk about Jesus challenging the common interpretations of the law in the Gospels. He boiled down all of Gods commands to the great command: love God and love people. Jesus wasnt focused on the letter of the law, but the heart behind it. The religious leaders of the day had becoming totally wrapped up in legalism and had lost sight of the purpose behind the laws.

In the next part of the episode (21:46-33:57), the guys discuss the central debate of the New Testament: should Jesus followers have to follow the commands even if they arent Jewish? The apostles were divided on this, and its a question that Paul comes back to throughout his letters.

In the final part of the episode (34:12-50:05), the guys wrap things up with a discussion on what the law should mean for Jesus followers today. Though these laws likely wont affect our day-to-day lives, there is profound wisdom to be gained, especially when we understand Gods purpose for giving them. When we look at the context the laws were given in, we can see Gods heart for his people and his creation.

Hej fellow 'macsers, and in particular, hej fellow hyperbole users,

I recently started using Hyperbole as a knowledge base and must say I am quite satisfied. I have in as an org extension so I get the benefit of being able to hide/show contents while retaining the functionality of hyperbole/hyrolo (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong).

However, there's one thing that really annoys me, and I would like to know how to change that. Whenever I come out of a
hyrolo-fgrep
query, my hyrolo file is in read-only mode. Which means that I have to change out of it every time I made an edit. I
C-s
'ed through the Hyperbole manual but couldn't find it mentioned anywhere.

Since I am not yet very proficient with the inner workings of my kitchen-si *ahem* batteries-included computing environment I don't even have a good idea on how to debug it. Thus, any more or less general considerations are also warmly welcomed!

Have a good day, fellows :)

   submitted by /u/olivuser
[link] [comments]

I'm in the process of migrating back to emacs (for org-mode, especially org-roam) from vim land and want to recreate my workflow. I have a work-issued MacBook that's performance is less than optimal, especially for docker stuff. To remedy that, I have a beefy VM on my personal workstation that I ssh into then do all my work in nvim with tmux and it all works quite nicely.

I'm trying to recreate that workflow with the Emacs GUI. I've found a few blog posts that talk about SSH forwarding the emacs server socket allowing you to open remote files in your GUI using TRAMP mode. This is not really what I want since I want pretty much all compute, (running makes tasks, using the lang server, etc) to be on my workstation VM and just have a window into it via the emacs GUI on my Mac.

What I'm looking at doing now is running an emacs server in TCP mode on my VM, then connecting to that on my mac. What I've read so far is that it wasn't made for what I want, just because Windows doesn't support Unix sockets, and there are massive security concerns, which is not a concern for me since my VM is only accessible through a VPN.

I guess my questions boil down to:

Is anyone using emacs server TCP mode to work on a remote machine with good or bad experience?

Is there a better way to do what I want?

Am I being a moron trying to use the GUI and should just use emacs in terminal mode like I was with nvim?

Thanks for any info you can provide!

   submitted by /u/RyanTheKing
[link] [comments]

In this screen cast I demonstrate three scripts I have developed for
setting my custom desktop sessions wallpaper.

sbg
is a CLI tool that accepts the path to a single image file as an
argument. All it does is set that file as the new wallpaper.

sbgmenu
is a
dmenu
interface with two modes: (i) viewing images,
(ii) setting a wallpaper. Everything is still text-based.

nbm
follows a graphical approach. It presents an image grid where
the user can enlarge an image and mark the one intended as the new
wallpaper.

All scripts as well as the entire desktop session are part of my
dotfiles.

In part one (0:00-13:20), Tim and Jon briefly recap the series so far. They discuss Pauls complex background. Paul was a Jew but was living primarily among Gentiles in different cities in the Roman Empire. Tim points out that because of his background, Pauls reputation as a controversial figure continues to grow. He doesnt fit into the normal social categories of the day.

In part two (13:20-33:00), Tim dives into Acts 11:27-30:
“During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.”

Tim says that this is hugely symbolic. Paul is arriving back in Jerusalem with a group of international Christians bearing a gift of money to help give relief to the Jerusalem famine.

Jon points out that it's really remarkable that Paul was able to raise these funds, before the days of Kickstarter. Tim says that for Paul, the gift was a symbol of the unity of the Church. There was no class system and no division across racial, ethnic, or economic lines. The gift was a representation of all that Paul believed was possible in the communities of Christians.

In part three (33:00-end), Tim shares a passage from Ephesians:
"Remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace.” Ephesians 2:12-15.

Tim says that this passage is more evidence that Paul really wanted Jews and Gentiles to be united as one Church.

Then in reference to Ephesians 3, Tim says that for Paul, the creation of the new humanity through Christ is the way that God also chooses to demonstrate his wisdom to the divine council.
“Although I am less than the least of all the Lords people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 3:8-10.

Tim says that Paul believed he was participating in a cosmic story and that working to unify Jews with all other ethnicities through Jesus was what Jesus was praying for in John 17:21: “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.”

Nyxt 2.2.1

We are happy to announce Nyxt 2.2.1. This is mostly a bug-fix release with some minor improvements.

Change log:

2.2.1

Re-added the inferred-keyword source to the bookmark prompt buffer.

Numerous documentation fixes and updates.

define-scheme
syntax has been extended to allow importing other
schemes. See the manual for an example.

Arbitrary HTML is now allowed in mode formatting.

*Bookmarks* buffer is automatically updated when deleting entries. (Thanks to
@shamazmazum!)

Processes can now be stopped in process-mode.

New
repeat-times
command.

List methods in class descriptions.

Build and compilation changes

Quicklisp is no longer used to fetch dependencies. Instead, all Lisp
dependencies are pinned and fetched via Git submodules into the
_build

subdirectory. This should improve reproducibility. The
NYXT_QUICKLISP

environment variable has been replaced by
NYXT_SUBMODULES
.

Platform support

Quicklisp can now be properly loaded when Nyxt was installed via the .deb
file.

Bug fixes

Properly handle cancelation in yes/no prompt-buffers.

Fix sandboxing. (Thanks to @tiberious726!)

Fix toggle-mark in visual-mode. (Thanks to @hendursaga!)

Report load-after-system warnings. (Thanks to @hendursaga!)

Properly scroll into view when in visual-mode. (Thanks to @aaron-tan!)

Fix upload of files with wildcard characters in their name. (Thanks to
@shamazmazum!)

In this screen cast I demonstrate my methodology for writing tasks, as
well as a couple of scripts for interacting with the to-do list.

stm
is a CLI tool that provides various ways of presenting the
pending tasks, using standard UNIX utilities.

stmmenu
is a
dmenu
interface that either removes a matching string
from the list, or appends a non-matching item to the list.

All scripts as well as the entire desktop session are part of my
