The recent news of the Steamdeck coming with an immutable filesystem made me curious. I've tried Fedora Silverblue in the past and really liked it in concept. I just like Arch as a distro more.

So, could i set this up myself? The Arch wiki doesn't seem to provide info on that. Could i wrap my core arch install into an immutable state and put my stuff on top of that? Potentially choosing one of my "setups" at boot, having the immutable core underneath and multiple different states on top?

There are several uses that come to mind for me personally, not the least of which the fact that i like to "play" with my system and test stuff out. Having the option to run a different overlay for testing the latest plasma version while having a dependable, working xfce setup completely seperated seems like a decent idea.

I know Silverblue uses ostree for that, and that doesn't seem to be distro specific. I'm not looking for a step by step tutorial, but an idea where to look to set something like this up.

   submitted by /u/domsch1988
[link] [comments]

In this screen cast, I present a working prototype of TMR (TMR Must
Recur). This is a shell script written in Bash that implements
a simplistic timer.
tmr
is meant to be executed in the console and
accepts a single argument that must be a valid unit of time, such as

10s
for ten seconds.

The purpose of this script is mostly didactic. It tries to do things by
using Bash parameter expansion. Ultimately, this is just an experiment
meant to explore the possibilities of various shell scripting methods.

TMR is part of my dotfiles
and is licensed under the GPLv3 (as is the rest of the code).

Today I came across this great summary of the concept of interactive programming:

Development in Common Lisp is interactive. Theres no separate compile/run/debug cycle. Instead of that, the program is developed while it runs. Compilation is incremental, and functions can be created and updated on the fly. As the program is running, all objects are available and can be inspected all the time. This is much more than a simple REPL; the whole environment, from the IDE to the language is prepared for this type of development.

https://common-lisp.net/features

Obviously, this is not something specific to Common Lisp and it applies to most Lisp dialects and many other programming languages.

I was first exposed to interactive programming when studying Common Lisp in 2005. Back then I came across a SLIME screencast by Marco Baringer that blew my mind (I was mostly programming in C++ and Java at the time).1 Today such a workflow feels just as magical and special as it did all those years ago.

For me interactive programming is probably the most important advantage of Lisps and Emacs over other programming languages and editors. I cannot imagine any productive workflow without it!

Ive written a bit about interactive programming with Clojure and Emacs here. Still, I always feel that this is one of those concepts that you cant really understand until youve experienced it. Just like the Matrix.

I still have it on my todo list to record a similar screencast for CIDER. ↩

Some information on Alans Bio

Alan has been a Community Manager at Canonical primarily working on Ubuntu for devices but is pretty much anywhere and everywhere that Ubuntu is.

He first encountered Linux in the mid-1990s, and ran Red Hat then Debian on the desktop and server until Ubuntu Warty came out. Alan has been using Ubuntu since 4.10 the Warty Warthog and never looked back.

Previously Alan spent 13 years working as a system admin on some evil German proprietary software, but did what he could for Ubuntu and Linux in his spare time.

Alan became an Ubuntu member in 2006 and has in the past been the contact person for the UK LoCo team, a member of the LoCo Council and a member of the EMEA Membership board and the Community Council. He quite dislikes forums. Alan likes cats.

Setup and ran the Screencast Team which aimed to create a set of tutorial videos for new Ubuntu users. As part of that he managed the Ubuntu Screencasts Site. Since then Alan has now handed this over to another Ubuntu member.

Often runs development releases of Ubuntu early in the cycle to provide testing, bug reporting and triage help.
