<p>Welcome to episode two of our series discussing the biblical theme of the Son of Man. In this episode, Tim and Jon discuss humanity's role in relation to other parts of creation, specifically animals.</p>
<p>In part one (0:00-30:15), the guys briefly recap the first episode and quickly go over Daniels dream in Daniel 7, where he has a vision of the Son of Man appearing.</p>
<p>Tim then dives into the language and ideas presented in Genesis 1 and specifically focuses on the order of creation and how the days are paired.<br />
Genesis 1:1-2:<br />
In the beginning God created the skies and the land<br />
and the land was wild and waste, and darkness was over the face of the watery deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters.</p>
<p>Wild (tohu) = unordered<br />
Waste (vohu) = uninhabited<br />
Day 1 - Light: Separated from dark, day and night.<br />
Day 4 - Lights appointed to rule the day and night.<br />
Day 2 - Waters above separated from waters below.<br />
Day 5 - Creatures in waters below, creatures in waters above.<br />
“And God created the great sea monsters...&quot; (1:21)<br />
“And God blessed them, saying be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters…” (1:22)<br />
Day 3 - Water separated from dry land.<br />
“Let the land bring forth (ותוצא) plants and vegetation and seed-producing plants and trees producing fruit.” (1:12)<br />
Day 6 - Creatures on the land.<br />
“Let the land bring forth (ותוצא) living beasts by their kinds.” (1:25)</p>
<p>“Let us create the human (ha-adam) in our image and as our likeness…<br />
And God blessed them, and said, (1) be fruitful and multiply and fill the land and subdue it, and rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the beasts on the land.” (1:26-28)</p>
<p>Gen 2:1-3: God rests on the seventh day, which does not end.</p>
<p>Tim then focuses on humanity's relationship with animals. Tim notices that humans are the “second comers” to creation, who are given the responsibility to rule over the animals who came first. This is a pattern that shows itself many times in Genesis. (Think about Josephs sons later in the story.)</p>
<p>Tim then asks what it means for humans to be called to rule over the animals. Tim cites Richard Bauckhams book Living with Other Creatures,</p>
<p>“It is not often well enough noticed that the command God gives to humanity refers to two rather different matters. It refers first to the relationship of humans to the earth, secondly to their relationship to other living creatures...and they are not the same thing. Humans are not alone in being told to be fruitful and to multiply and to fill, the first and birds were given the same blessing on day 5. Only humans are told to fill and to subdue the land. In the narrative this refers clearly to agriculture, taking possession of the soil and working it in order to make it yield more food for humans than it would otherwise do.</p>
<p>But what about all the other land animals? How does humanitys role of subduing land relate to Gods blessing of the animals to fill the land? Notice Gods next words to the humans:<br />
See, I have given you (humans) every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. (Gen 1: 29 30)</p>
<p>Why does God tell humans that he has given every plant for food for the other living creatures? Surely, the reason is that it is the humans who need to know that the produce of the earth is not intended to feed them alone, but also all the living species of the earth. The clear implication is that the earth can provide enough food for all creatures. Humans are not to fill the earth and subdue it in a way that leaves no room and no sustenance for the other creatures who share the earth with them. God has given them too the right to live from the soil. So the human right to make use of the earth, to live from it, is far from unlimited. It must respect the existence of other creatures.</p>
<p>The biblical portrait of human dominion over the animals must be filled out by the Bibles vision of “royal rule.” Since Genesis depicts the image of God as a kind of royal function, the rule of a king over others, it is worth recalling the only passage in the law of Moses that refers to the role of the king in Israel (Deut. 17: 14 20). There it is emphasized that the king is one among his brothers and sisters, his fellow-Israelites, and should not forget it. He should not accumulate wealth or arms or indulge in any of the ways kings usually exalt themselves above their subjects. Only if they remember their fundamental solidarity with their people will kings be able to rule truly for the benefit of their people. Similarly, only when humans remember their fundamental solidarity with their fellow-creatures will they be able to exercise their distinctive authority within creation for the benefit of other creatures.” (pp. 226-228)</p>
<p>In part two (30:15-41:30), Jon asks about carnivorous animals like lions. Tim says that life survives at the expense of other lives right now, but apparently, in the new creation, that will fundamentally change.</p>
<p>Tim says that humans bear responsibility for animals destiny; thats why we are called to rule them. This is humanity acting in their identity of the divine image.</p>
<p>Tim shares this quote:<br />
“The close relation of the term for Gods image with that for the commission to exercise dominion emerges quite clearly when we have understood selem as a plastic image. Just as powerful earthly kings, to indicate their claim to dominion, erect an image of themselves in the provinces of their empire where they do not personally appear, so man is placed upon earth in Gods image as Gods sovereign emblem. He is really only Gods representative, summoned to maintain and enforce Gods claim to dominion over the earth.”<br />
Gerhard von Rad, Genesis: A Commentary, ed. Peter Ackroyd et al., trans. John H. Marks, Revised Edition., The Old Testament Library (Philadelphia, PA: The Westminster Press, 1972), 5960.</p>
<p>Tim says that a human making an idol is an oxymoron. Humans are the image of God, so why would they make one?</p>
<p>Tim then posits that in Genesis 3, an animal (the snake) is the one who deceives Adam and Eve. Humans end up getting ruled by the animals instead of ruling them.</p>
<p>In part three (41:30-53:00), the guys discuss Psalm 8:</p>
<p>O Lord, our Lord,<br />
How majestic is Your name in all the earth,<br />
Who have shown Your splendor above the heavens!<br />
….When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,<br />
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;<br />
What is human that You take thought of him,<br />
And the son of man (human) that You care for him?<br />
Yet You have made him a little lower than elohim (God or angelic beings),<br />
And You crown him with glory and majesty! [kavod va-hadar divine attributes]<br />
You make him to rule [mashal] over the works of Your hands;<br />
You have put all things under his feet,<br />
All sheep and oxen,<br />
And also the beasts of the field,<br />
The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,<br />
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.<br />
O Lord, our Lord,<br />
How majestic is Your name in all the earth!<br />
Notice how Gods exaltation and glorification of humans is set within an inclusion frame about Gods own majesty and reputation. An exalted humanity doesnt compete with God, rather it increases Gods own honor, because humans are an expression of the divine beauty and creativity.</p>
<p>In part four (53:00-end), Tim shares this quote:</p>
<p>“One point of saying that God is the absolute sovereign (as the biblical texts say time and again) is to say that he is free: free to exalt and share his own power and divine power with those whom he wills, through a transformation of their nature and identity; free to create entities that in various ways share in his identity as ruler and judge, and who manifest his presence within the world… The God of the biblical story is able to enter into and take on the nature and identity of the very reality he has created, taking it up into his very self. Gods identity is, apparently, “sharable.” … Gods identity is not a zero-sum game. To say that God shares his identity with humanity does not mean he suffers a loss of being; on the contrary, it is actually a way of saying that his identity is magnified and his glory extended.” [Tims note: “and, we may add, this is the way the divine love is extended as well.”] - Crispin Fletcher-Louis, Jesus Monotheism, 310-312.</p>
<p>Tim says that for God, relationship with creation means entering into a shared relationship with it.</p>

<p>I havent talked about Common-Lisp on Irreal for a long time. Thats mostly because the majority of my recent Lisp programming has been in Elisp but I still love Common-Lisp and Scheme and am always happy when I find an interesting article about them. I particularly like articles that show how Lisp is being used to solve real world problems.</p>
<p>For a long time, the canonical example of this has been <a href="https://www.itasoftware.com/">ITA Software</a>, but there are others and azzamsa and his collaborators have a <a href="https://github.com/azzamsa/awesome-lisp-companies/">list</a>. When he saw the list, Alex Nygren told them about his company <a href="https://www.kinaknowledge.com/">Kina Knowledge</a> that makes extensive use of Common-Lisp and its homegrown lisp, DLisp, that compiles to Javascript. That led to a nice <a href="https://lisp-journey.gitlab.io/blog/lisp-interview-kina/">blog post</a> by vindarel that describes the Kina system and how Lisp fits into it.</p>
<p>You should read the post for the details but the TL;DR is that their technology stack is made up of Ruby/Rails, Javascript, Common-Lisp, and DLisp. Most of their front end is written in DLisp and is available to the end user. The back end is Common-Lisp that does much of the heavy lifting. And, as a bonus, Nygren uses Emacs for his Lisp coding and documentation. It makes sense; if youre a Lisper, Emacs is a natural fit.</p>
<p>The post is well worth a read if youre interested in how Lisp is being used today. There arent, Im sure, enough Lisp jobs for everyone who wants one but they arent non-existent either. Paul Graham famously described Lisp as their secret weapon at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viaweb">Viaweb</a> and related how they tried to prevent their competitors from finding out they were using it. Perhaps more companies will get the message and the number of Lisp jobs will increase.</p>

<p>In this presentation I talk about the workflow of mixing different font
families inside of the same buffer. The idea is to use this for
<code>org-mode</code> so that you can have some text use a monospaced font to keep
its alignment properties in tact, while the rest of the buffer switched
to a proportionately-spaced font that is more natural to read for large
portions of text.</p>
<p>The information shared here is complementary to what I talked about
yesterday on the topic of <a href="https://protesilaos.com/codelog/2020-07-16-emacs-focused-editing/">“Focused editing” tools for
Emacs</a></p>
<p>Note that mixed font settings for <code>org-mode</code>, <code>markdown-mode</code>, and
others will depend on the theme that you use. My <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes">Modus
themes</a> are designed to
cope well with such demands.</p>
<p>Check <a href="https://protesilaos.com/emacs/dotemacs">my dotemacs</a> for more code and
relevant documentation.</p>
<h2>Text of the presentation</h2>
<p>The following is a standard Org buffer.</p>
<pre><code class="language-org">#+TITLE: Emacs: mixed font faces for Org mode
#+AUTHOR: Protesilaos Stavrou · https://protesilaos.com
** Basic concepts
The idea here is to show you how to configure your fonts so that you can
optimise for mixed-typeface scenaria. You can use these for focused
writing (see my previous video) or to do presentations such as this one!
You can already tell that paragraph text is allowed to use a typeface
that is proportionately-spaced. This is because it reads from the
=default= face (more on that later). Whereas inline code is configured to
always use the more specialised =fixed-pitch= face that applies a
monospaced font. /Notice the difference?/
This principle applies to all spacing-sensitive constructs, such as
tables and special lines. Otherwise you would be seeing misalignments.
#+NAME: Sample of contrast ratios
| Colour name | | #fff1f0 | #ecf7ed |
|---------------+---------+---------+---------|
| red | #a60000 | 7.28 | 7.28 |
| red-alt | #972500 | 7.40 | 7.40 |
| red-alt-other | #a0132f | 7.26 | 7.26 |
#+TBLFM: $3='(clr $2 @1$3);%0.2f::$4='(clr $2 @1$4);%0.2f
** Configuring “face” attributes for fonts
There are multiple ways to set your font in Emacs. I find that doing so
at the “face” level is effective and yields consistent results.
I will show you how to do it, but we must briefly cover the basics
before we deal with the actual code.
In Emacs parlance a “face” is a display construct that contains data
such as an associated foreground and background colour, as well as all
typographic properties (height, weight, font family, slant, etc.).
Couched in those terms, an Emacs theme is, in essence, a program that
controls such faces. You can already spot several faces on display here
(the current theme is my Modus Vivendi---in some of my other videos I
use its light counterpart: Modus Operandi).
*** The three faces we need to take care of
To make things work, we will be using the =set-face-attribute= function.
And we need to configure three faces:
1. =default= :: This one is the standard font family that all other faces
refer to when they have no font specification of their own. In
general, faces *should not* have a typeface spec, unless they need to.
2. =fixed-pitch= :: This should be given a monospaced typeface and is
meant to be inherited by faces that must always be presented with
fixed-spacing.
3. =variable-pitch= :: Whereas this should be a proportionately-spaced
font. Again, it is meant to be inhereted by faces that are supposed
to be presented with such a typeface (though you do not need to
specify those faces, as =M-x variable-pitch-mode= does it
automatically).
For me a monospaced font should be the standard, so in practice I
configure =default= and =fixed-pitch= to use the same typeface.
*** Using ~set-face-attribute~
Let us do this together.
#+begin_src emacs-lisp
(set-face-attribute 'default nil :font "Hack-16")
(set-face-attribute 'fixed-pitch nil :font "Hack-16")
(set-face-attribute 'variable-pitch nil :font "FiraGO-18")
(dolist (face '(default fixed-pitch))
(set-face-attribute `,face nil :font "Hack-16"))
#+end_src
When you are on your own, you can start by consulting Emacs /itself/ on
how to use this function. Do it with =C-h f set-face-attribute=. Or
place the point over that symbol (the unique name of the function), type
=C-h f= and then =M-n= to select it.
Make a habit of using these help functions (and checking the source code
they provide via a link): I would argue this is the difference between
understanding Emacs and merely using it.
** Themes will affect your results
Note that your theme must have configured everything properly for this
to work. More specifically, you must make sure that all indentation or
spacing-sensitive faces are designed to always inherit from =fixed-pitch=.
Petition your theme's developer to account for this workflow of mixing
fonts.
Or use my Modus themes which are designed to meet the highest
accessibility standard for colour contrast. Basically this is about
readability, while the technical spec is called “WCAG AAA”: it
corresponds to a *minimum contrast ratio* between background and
foreground values of 7:1.
The themes are /highly customisable/ and have wide package coverage.
See https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes for details.
*** Notes for theme devs and DIY users
These are the faces for =org-mode= that your theme needs to configure with
the =:inherit fixed-pitch= attribute. Special thanks to Gitlab user “Ben”
for bringing these to my attention a while ago!
+ org-block
+ org-block-begin-line
+ org-block-end-line
+ org-code
+ org-document-info-keyword

Optionally also consider these for =markdown-mode=:

+ markdown-html-attr-name-face
+ markdown-html-attr-value-face
+ markdown-html-entity-face
+ markdown-html-tag-delimiter-face

<p>I am now using Lemonbar to draw a panel for my custom working
environment. I was running <a href="https://github.com/jaagr/polybar">Polybar</a>
before. The reasons for the switch are documented herein.</p>
<p>In practice, this means that the <code>master</code> branch of <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/dotfiles">my
dotfiles</a> is considered
unstable until further notice (see the README for demos with the new
panel).</p>
<h2>Stick with the Debian repos</h2>
<p>To get Lemonbar execute:</p>
<pre><code>sudo apt install lemonbar
</code></pre>
<p>Compare that to Polybar, which is not available in the official
repositories. One has to compile it from source. A complication that
can lead to inconveniences down the road. What if in the near future I
would also have to hunt down some of its new dependencies? And what if
Debian Stable, which I intend to <a href="https://protesilaos.com/codelog/debian-sid-stable-plan/">switch to once Buster is
out</a>, does not have the version
numbers needed to compile from source? What if conflicts arise?</p>
<p>I actively try to avoid making a FrankenDebian. The only package I have
no hesitation compiling from source is my fork of Simple Terminal by the
Suckless community.<a href="#fn:MySTFork" class="footnote" rel="footnote">1</a> For all the rest, I try to rely only on
packages provided by the official mirrors and make sure never to mix and
match from the various Debian channels (stable, testing, unstable, …).</p>
<p>There are cases where building directly from upstream is necessary.
Such as when a piece of software is an absolute requirement for a given
task and where no adequate alternatives are present. This is not the
case with Polybar. It is not an integral part of my workflow, while
there are alternatives available, including the option to use something
like <code>xfce4-panel</code> in tandem with <code>bspwm</code>.</p>
<h2>Have fun scripting</h2>
<p>Make no mistake: I like Polybar. It is a tool that covers most use
cases and its modules work well with fairly little effort. Its
configuration file is easy to understand. It uses a standard way for
modifying the looks of the various pieces of information on display.
Furthermore, it supports Xft fonts (proportional, outline font files
like <code>.ttf</code>) and can display glyph icons with iconic typefaces such as
FontAwesome.</p>
<p>With all this power comes the downside of skipping an important learning
session on how to retrieve all the data Polybar can present. You want
Polybar to display <code>bspwm</code> workspaces and the flags of the focused node?
Just add the relevant module to the config file and you are good to go.
Now try getting that yourself to realise how much more demanding the
task becomes.</p>
<p>Seeing as I was looking for alternatives anyhow, I decided to opt for
Lemonbar. What this tool does is draw an empty panel. There are no
modules built in. No defined configuration file to add the stuff you
need. Nothing. Lemonbar will just print the output of a command, same
as what you would expect in the shell. Example:</p>
<pre><code>echo "Hello world" | lemonbar -p
</code></pre>
<p>This pipes the output of <code>echo</code> to the panel. The <code>-p</code> flag makes the
panel stay in place. This is where scripting comes in: get it to
display information dynamically, place it in the appropriate position,
format it as needed, and so on.</p>
<p>Not to bother you with the details, check out my <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/dotfiles/blob/master/bin/bin/melonpanel">Lemonbar script,
called
“melonpanel”</a>
for the implementation, as well as my <code>bspwmrc</code> and <code>sxhkdrc</code> to see how
it fits in with the rest of the system.</p>
<h2>Scripts are more portable than source code</h2>
<p>I want to make my dotfiles easy to deploy on new systems. Having to
compile software is the opposite of what I target. I prefer to run one
<code>apt install</code> with all the packages I need and then use GNU Stow on my
dotfiles. Everything will be in place within minutes. Eventually this
process will be scripted so that <code>./install.sh</code> will streamline the
work.</p>
<p>I attach great importance to portability: my custom desktop session
should ultimately be reproducible. The dotfiles must work on any clean
install of the next Debian stable release (codenamed “Buster”). This is
an ambitious, complex, multi-faceted task. Removing bottlenecks will
only be to its benefit. My plan is never to have to compile a piece of
software from source and then expect the user to maintain the package.
Debian is not meant for that kind of setup (well-justified exceptions
notwithstanding).</p>
<p>Lemonbar it is then!</p>
