In Emacs, I usually end up enabling the same set of minor modes when I use one of my “writing modes”, namely modes like markdown-mode and org-mode. Enabling a single minor mode automatically is generally pretty easy via the appropriate mode hook, but enabling more than one minor mode requires one more level of indirection. Of course it does, because everything in computer science requires one more level of indirection :).

Hi all, is anyone using org-ql with a big number of files, probably in combination with org-roam, instead of say deft? How well does it scale to thousands of files? I know that org-agenda can get pretty sluggish around a thousand files, but it's my understanding that org-ql is faster, although maybe not that faster. Any experience? Thanks!

NOTE: this is not for TODOs but for general search, I've seen workarounds that exclude files not containing tasks nor projects from the search, but that's not what I'm interested in, I want to search every file and ideally using more structured queries like those of org-ql (vs deft).

EDIT: I've been experimenting a bit with this:

I cloned this big nonsense ZK which is designed to stress-test note-taking apps.

I converted all notes from md to org using pandoc:
for f in *; do pandoc --to org "$f" > "${f%%.md}.org"; done
. Not really necessary for what it follows, except for the file extension part, but anyway.

Now, searching for some text with ripgrep is very fast, as expected, for example with 56/10000 matches:

```
time rg -c "to queer noises" *.org | wc -l 56
real 0m0.317s user 0m0.195s sys 0m0.316s ```
Now with org-ql the same search setting
org-directory
to be the ZK folder, requiring no grouping and just random order, and doing a
(regexp "to queer noises")
freezes, at least I've been waiting for minutes now for it to end. Repeating the search in a subset of that ZK with just a few hundred notes, it ends after some seconds, but it's still borderline usable.
So I guess the answer is a sound NO, org-ql can't be reasonably used in a setup like this one. u/github-alphapapa do you have any objection to my methodology here? Thanks!
EDIT: deft has also been terribly sluggish with this same ZK, both in generating the deft buffer and in searching through it, so the best option seems to be something like consult-ripgrep.
   submitted by    /u/nnenneplex
[link]   [comments]
In some modes in Emacs, the
hl-line
(hl for highlight) is used. Thats not intended to highlight the current line when you edit text; its used for things like feed readers and email, where you operate on items that are represented on lines. This highlight is way too subtle for my taste.
I use the very excellent dark and light [
modus-themes
][modus] in Emacs. The light theme has black text on white background, and that is pretty much what you see in macOS Finder, too, when you browse directories. In Finder, when you select something, you get the classic blue bakcground with white foreground color.
Thats what was missing from my life, so I overwrite the colors. Native GUI Emacs on macOS has named colors like the
NSColor
s from AppKit, so I can just use
selectedContentBackgroundColor
and
alternateSelectedControlTextColor
. This could, in theory, also adapt to dark vs light mode, but on macOS, the color is actually the same for both modes. (At least from eyeballing it.)
Some random newsletter emails with the new colors
Update 2021-11-09: This approach has been improved and in part superseded by the introduction of LIN so I can apply these colors to selection UIs but not to regular text documents.
Heres how I hook into dark/light mode changes to make sure the color is replaced:
(defun ct/theme-mac-os-hl-line ()
(set-face-attribute 'hl-line nil
:foreground "alternateSelectedControlTextColor"
I also hook this up to
modus-themes
.
(add-hook 'modus-themes-after-load-theme-hook #'ct/theme-mac-os-hl-line)
So, I tried it. I like the fundamental ideas, but it lacks documentation for beginners, even for beginners with some experience in other distros. - There's a video how to install programs and rollback. Good. - I can't find any entry point for how to understand how to configure the system. I'm not talking about learning Scheme, but how to even find and open a config file. I'm sure it written down somewhere, certainly not easy to find. - I mean such things like configure services. I assume the devs wanted a clean system, but finding hints in the common places where config files are in other distros would help a lot. The service command also doesn't work and doesn't give a hint what else to do. - The "Documentation" suggests using 'info -k <name>' to find more infos. These infos are then wrong or cryptic. The info on "Networking Services" tells me that the default ?config-file? for dhcpd-configuration is ?#f?. Okay. That aside, it would also be great to find that with 'man dhcpd'. - There are certain things beginners have problems with, for example how to configure their network. So finding a step by step tutorial how to do that is a fundamental thing. Such things also help to understand the system by example. - The journal on systems with SystemD give me much more infos than Shepherd does, or I haven't found the right way to do it. The man pages are rather brief.
Letting one person with some experience in some other distro test the system, while writing down the difficulties and then fixing them, would make the system much more useable. Currently it's the only distro where I can't even get a live system running or installing it, since I need a internet connection for that but but I can't configure it.
   submitted by    /u/botfiddler
[link]   [comments]
