The doc for
(setq-default indicate-empty-lines t)
is confusing for me.
C-h v indicate-empty-lines
tells "Visually indicate empty lines after the buffer end." But how can you have empty lines after the buffer end? There is nothing after the buffer end!

Take a look at this screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/tzcDdYKl.png Line 10 is the last line of the buffer. There is nothing after Line 10. The fringe bitmap indicator shows the void (limbo?) after the end of the buffer. But the doc refers to this void (limbo lines) as "empty lines". Why?

Aren't Lines 6-10 empty lines? Lines 6-10 are actual lines that contain nothing but
\n
. Aren't these the empty lines - the blank lines?

Isn't everything after Line 10 limbo? visual representation of lines that don't exist / end of buffer? Help me understand the Emacs terminology?
In a recent entry on configuring mixed
fonts,
I outlined how to specify your typefaces of choice by configuring the

default
,
variable-pitch
, and
fixed-pitch
faces. This would allow
you to benefit from variegated typography, such as having paragraph text
rendered in a proportionately spaced font, while inline code is
displayed as monospaced.

The overall approach of controlling the three basic faces is fine, but
the code I shared had the unintended consequence of breaking the
built-in
text-scale-adjust
command (by default bound to
C-x C-+
,

C-x C--
,
C-x C-0
). Here I issue a corrective to the technique that
was used before.

The code that breaks ‘text-scale-adjust’

This is the gist of what I was using for several months:

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :font "Hack-16")
(set-face-attribute 'fixed-pitch nil :font "Hack-16")
(set-face-attribute 'variable-pitch nil :font "FiraGO-16")

A variant of the above can be expressed as follows:

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :family "Hack" :height 160)
(set-face-attribute 'fixed-pitch nil :family "Hack" :height 160)
(set-face-attribute 'variable-pitch nil :family "FiraGO" :height 160)

If you set fonts this way and try to use
text-scale-adjust
in a buffer
with mixed fonts, you will notice that only the main text, affected by
the
default
face, gets scaled. The rest retain their height—not good.

This is because of a hard-wired assumption in the
text-scale-adjust

command to only target the
default
face:
variable-pitch
and

fixed-pitch
remain in tact, thus breaking our expectations.

The problem consists in the fact that we are specifying an absolute size
for each font family. Whereas we should be benefiting from relative
sizes that all have a single point of reference, which is easy to do.

The recommended way to set font heights with faces

Let us re-purpose the sample code from the previous section, in order to
get the behaviour we expect out of
text-scale-adjust
.

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :font "Hack-16")
(set-face-attribute 'fixed-pitch nil :family "Hack" :height 1.0)
(set-face-attribute 'variable-pitch nil :family "FiraGO" :height 1.0)

A alternative to the above is this:

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :family "Hack" :height 160)
(set-face-attribute 'fixed-pitch nil :family "Hack")
(set-face-attribute 'variable-pitch nil :family "FiraGO")

Notice that we set an absolute point size only for the
default
face.
While we instruct Emacs to interpret the height of
fixed-pitch
and

variable-pitch
as relative to that constant. Therein lies the
difference between integer and floating point values for the
:height

attribute (remember to consult
C-h f set-face-attribute
).

Strictly speaking, the
:height 1.0
is not necessary, unless you are
overriding a prior state. It is what applies when the specification is
omitted. Rendering it explicit here helps us spot the subtleties in
notation and be clear about what is at play.

Details are tricky

I was using the old technique for several months, adjusting fonts
through a bespoke function of mine that altered their absolute sizes.
What inspired me to investigate and eventually address this issue is a
particular statement in the doc string of
set-face-attribute
:

Note that for the ‘default’ face, you must specify an absolute height
(since there is nothing for it to be relative to).

Which implied that if the
default
was a constant, all other faces
could simply have a relative height. This is because of the peculiar
nature of that face to serve as the foundation upon which all others are
established. As such, a
:height
with a floating point is a multiple
of the
default
font size. Simple and effective!

I am now happily using
text-scale-adjust
in tandem with the tools I
mentioned in my recent video about “Focused editing” for
Emacs.

This information is also documented in the official manual of the Modus
themes because they are designed
to cope well with mixed font scenaria, such as when the user decides to
enable the built-in
variable-pitch-mode
.

This article invites the reader to embark on a journey of thoughts and inquisitions. You won't get anything measurable or practical out of it. If this isn't your cup of tea, feel free to skip it.

Have you ever paused to gaze at how much human potential is being wasted on bullshit? The term isn't being used gratuitously to cause turmoil, but as a reference to a very concrete entity that one deals with. An interesting account of it was given by Harry G. Frankfurt on his book On Bullshit, from which the following passage was taken:

Someone who lies and someone who tells the truth are playing on opposite sides, so to speak, in the same game. Each responds to the facts as he understands them, although the response of the one is guided by the authority of the truth, while the response of the other defies that authority and refuses to meet its demands. The bullshitter ignores these demands altogether. He does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and oppose himself to it. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.

Think about the deeds of people you admire. Were they asked to do those things? Probably not. Or, even if they were, they probably went an extra mile. Such individuals were successful in taming the bullshit that deterred them from attaining their goals. Engaging in such pursuits often times entails being cut out from the broader outside world. If we were to use the terminology of Eric S. Raymond (also known as esr), this is the modus operandi of a "cathedral". In other words, small and specialised communities often need to operate in closed doors to focus on their goals. On the other extreme, we can think of a "bazaar", where anyone is invited to hop in and exchange ideas.

This analogy is thoroughly explored in the book The Cathedral and the Bazaar. It shows how both approaches aren't mutually-exclusive, but actually complementary when properly leveraged.

Nyxt qualifies as a good example of that. Its cathedral component would be its well-thought out architecture that ensures the longevity of the project. Please take a look at our article if you're curious.

As soon as that foundation is solid, all it takes is just some turns on the handle! In other words, the cathedral, while still operating as such, sets the apparatus so that ideas are shared in the bazaar. This will probably stop puzzling you when you give it some thought.

Let's dive deeper into Nyxt's case, and my personal experience with it. In the aforementioned book, esr lists several lessons, the first being:

Every good work of software starts by scratching a developer’s personal itch.

Nyxt's itch goes along the lines of "there should be an infinitely extensible web browser that lasts and meets the needs of the community".

With that in mind, I started using it too. But then something itched. Unbearably. So unbearably that I had to come to grips with it. And that meant a lot, since I barely knew Lisp and had never even read anything written in Common Lisp.

My itch were the cursor movements while moving word-wise. Most likely I was accustomed to the behaviour of
M-b
and
M-f
in Emacs, and couldn't rest until I saw that replicated in Nyxt. With the help (and patience) of the developers, I was able to figure it out and now there's an option for that (
conservative-word-move
). Judging by the Nyxt configuration files I've seen, it proved to be useful to others too!

To summarise, (free) software flourishes thanks to the contributions of all users who answer the urge of scratching their own itches! How much of your potential have you been wasting away by not paying enough attention to them?

I'll finish with another lesson from esr.

Treating your users as co-developers is your least-hassle route to rapid code improvement and effective debugging.

We're counting on you, so get onboard!

I just published version
0.8.0
of the Modus themes. These are my
highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They conform with the WCAG AAA
standard for colour contrast accessibility (a minimum contrast ratio of
7:1 between the foreground and background values). You can find the
packages on ELPA, MELPA, MELPA stable:

Modus Operandi and Modus Vivendi version 0.8.0

By Protesilaos Stavrou info@protesilaos.com on 2020-04-28

This entry records the changes since version 0.7.0 (2020-03-30). The
present release contains a little more than a hundred commits, covering
one month of intense work.

All changes are aligned with the primary objective of this project,
which is conformance with the WCAG AAA accessibility standard for colour
contrast. This translates to a minimum contrast ratio of 7:1 between a
given combination of foreground and background colours.

All customisation options mentioned herein are off (
nil
) by default.
The project’s policy is to offer such features on an “opt-in” basis,
while always respecting the principle of least surprise.

Refer to the README for further information.

Four new customisation options

The options in outline, with their detailed description below:

Rainbow headings

Section headings

3D modeline

Subtle diffs

“Rainbow headings” will apply more vivid colours to headings in

org-mode
and
outline-mode
. The gradation is similar to that of a
rainbow’s colour spectrum.

The default is to use colour values that are closer to the grey
scale.

“Section headings” also apply to
org-mode
and
outline-mode
. They
will draw an overline over each heading and use a nuanced background
colour that is appropriate for each level. For Org, this option has
some additional effects, where it will render keywords and priority
cookies in a box and add to them a subtle background. This is to
make sure that everything feels consistent (to the extent possible).

The default is to not use overlines, backgrounds, boxes in any of the
relevant faces. This is consistent with the standard austere
colouration of headings: to not deviate too much from a “plain text”
aesthetic.

NOTE: “rainbow headings” and “section headings” can work on their own or
be combined together.

“3D modeline” will use a faux unpressed button style for the current
window’s modeline (like the standard looks of
emacs -Q
). The
colours used for the active and inactive modelines are tweaked
accordingly to maximise the effect while retaining the visual
distinction between them.

The default is to draw the modelines in a two-dimensional style, with
the active one having a more noticeable border around it.

“Subtle diffs” will use colour-coded text for line-wise differences
without applying any appropriately-coded background value or, where
necessary, by using only a subtle greyscale background. This affects

diff-mode
,
magit
,
ediff
, and
smerge-mode
. For Magit an extra
set of tweaks is implemented to account for the differentiation
between the focused and unfocused diff hunks.

Due to their unique requirements, word-wise or refined changes are
always drawn with a colour-coded background, though it is less
intense when this option is enabled.

The default is to use a colour-coded background and foreground
combination (e.g. light green text on a dark green backdrop) and to
make appropriate adjustments for refined diffs and modes of
interaction such as Magit’s focused/unfocused diff states.

Other major refinements

Thoroughly revise the colours of
ediff
and
smerge-mode
, so that
they are aligned with those of
diff-mode
and
magit
. This is in
addition to the “subtle diffs” options mentioned in the previous
section.

Review the faces used by Flycheck and Flymake. A wavy/curly underline
is now used in all terminals that support it. The underlined text is
drawn with a more nuanced foreground than before. The previous design
was exaggerating an already clear effect and could make things more
difficult under certain circumstances.

All language checkers, including the aforementioned linter front-ends,
now benefit from a new set of colours that are designed specifically
for this particular purpose. Makes the affected faces feel more
different than their context.

Use dedicated colours for escape sequences, regular expression
constructs, and quoted characters. The goal is to better
differentiate them from their surroundings.

Tweak the colours of
hydra
to improve the distinction between its
various types of behaviour.

Reduce the overall luminance of the background colours used in the
fringes by the likes of
flycheck
,
flymake
,
diff-hl
, etc. They
should now not stand out more than they should, while retaining their
intended role.

Implement more saturated colours in Elfeed. The previous choices
could make it harder to differentiate the various parts of the
presentation.

Make better use of the customisation options for bold and slanted
constructs where that is allowed. If a face is not tied to the
semantics of these styles then it is drawn without them, unless the
user specifically opts for the relevant customisation options.
