My family and friends keep asking me what I want for Christmas. My honest answer is that I don't want anything for Christmas. They keep poking at me, saying surely there is something I want, but no, I tell them, there is nothing I want or need for Christmas.

Here's a hard truth of life and I'm probably going to be the only one who will tell you. You spend the first half of your life accumulating stuff and you spend the second half of your life taking all that stuff to Goodwill.

I'm 65 years old and frankly, I don't need any more trips to Goodwill.

Right now, I'm learning to read e-books. I hate e-books. You can't argue with the author. You can't write notes in the margins or scratch out entire paragraphs that don't make sense. I don't read a book. I devour it and I don't leave much left when I'm through. You can't do that with an e-book. Sure, you can make notes, but you can't tell from the highlights on the e-text how intensely you agreed or disagreed with the author.

But here's what I'm dealing with. I'm 65 and while I haven't thought about retiring, everyone keeps asking when I'm going to retire. My wife has put it more succinctly: “Where are you going to put all of your books when you retire? You don't think you're going to bring all of those books into this house, do you?”

I'd love to get books for Christmas, but where would I put them?

And I have enough ties. I have fat ties, skinny ties, striped ties, and paisley ties. I have ties for every occasion. Since the pandemic, we're not wearing ties anymore. So, now I have enough ties to last me a lifetime.

I don't need anything.

So, let me tell you what I want.

I want date ...

<img src="https://thumbnails.lbry.com/4bd7Akwz9HU" width="480" alt="thumbnail" title=""Hey, DT! Should I Work For Microsoft?" (And Other Questions)" />
On this episode of Hey, DT:
0:00 Intro
0:18 In the last few days, my computer has started to power off on it own. I turn my PC on and use it for a few minutes and it shuts itself off. I'm using Ubuntu 20.04. What could be the problem?
2:07 Might be an unpopular opinion but it would do you good if you choose to use an IDE for this stuff. Could have easily avoided those errors.
3:20 Why the click-bait titles and thumbnails?
4:12 I'm a computer engineering student. Should a person (especially students like me) who watches you and people like you, who are constantly promoting and spreading awareness of FOSS, FSF, etc. study hard and apply for internship and jobs at Microsoft? I am not talking specifically for Microsoft but the all the other tech giants too.
6:11 There is this channel that is posting your videos as their own, along with other Youtubers videos, and just putting a different thumbnail. I tried reporting it but youtube makes it difficult, here is a link to their most recent video of yours.
8:48 Just moved to Linux and your videos have been immensely helpful. I recently saw your video on NixOS and was wondering if there were reasons it wasn't your daily driver or if you just like Arco better?
10:23 I have a challenge for you: go for a month without any GUI/WM/DE, only using the default text terminal.
11:49 You mentioned Ubuntu needs to leave gnome , so what desktop environment would you recommend in gnome's place? Like how you recommended brave instead Firefox.
13:34 Stop talking bad about Mozilla.
This is a special episode in our podcast series on “How To Read The Bible”. Tim and Jon went on the road to do this podcast live before an audience in Milpitas, California! Tim and Jon discuss literature design patterns in the Bible and answer questions from the audience.

The guys do a brief recap of the How to Read The Bible series. There are key elements to reading the Bible well. Understanding plot, character, setting and biblical narrative style. (We have videos on each of these, you can see the links below in the show notes.)

In this episode, the guys combine all of these elements to talk about “patterns and design elements” in the Bible. Tim and Jon use the “hyperlink” analogy, saying that all the stories in the Bible link to each other in subtle and creative ways. People can learn to see these links and see the stories layering on top of each other by understanding key design patterns and techniques.

Below are timestamps of questions and examples:

(36:16) Jon asks the question, "Is understanding design patterns in the Bible an “elite” way to read the Bible?" Isnt the Bible supposed to be user friendly? It seems like studying to understand the historical context of the ancient Hebrew biblical literature is a time consuming task that some people might not be able to do.

(40:38) A gentleman asks a question about the city of Joppa being mentioned in both the book of Jonah and in Acts. Is this intentional and a reference to a hidden theme in the Bible?

(42:25) A gentleman asks a question about the creation of stories in the Bible. Whats the role of historical accuracy, retelling and condensing of events in the writing of the Bible?

(49:58) A gentleman asks a question: If the Bible is a magnificent piece of timeless art and literature, How do you explain the Bible to people who value brevity and directness, not artful literature and analogy?

(52:40) Tim gives an example of word plays and repetition in the Bible. The hebrew word “Tov” means good. Tov/Good is used in the creation story as a key repeating word. It develops first to describe creation. Then it describes humans (very good). Then it describes the “tree of the knowledge of good and not good/evil.” This theme culminates when the woman “sees that the tree is good” when the serpent tempts her, she has effectively switched places with God. God was the original one who “saw things as good”.

(1:03:05) Tim gives another example in Luke. The baptism of Jesus culminates with God speaking from heaven declaring Jesus is his son. Then the next story is not a story, its a genealogy that works its way backward to Adam being declared “the son of God”. Then Jesus is tempted, with the devil asking him if he “really is the son of God”. Then Jesus goes to his first town and people ask “Whos son is this?” Then Jesus casts out a demon who declares that Jesus is “the son of God”. Luke uses repetition to make a point to the reader, that Jesus is indeed who he has been declared to be, he is the Son of God.

(1:07:10) Tim gives an example of the selection of Saul to be the king of Israel. The hidden word in the story is “see or seeing.” At the start of the story, we are told Saul is tall. This is a strange detail. Most Bible characters have no physical attributes described about them, but here, Saul is tall, which is later used as a symbol in the story. Saul looks for a “seer” or a “prophet” when searching for his fathers donkeys. Why would the word “seer” be used in the story? Because it is a hidden key word in the story. Samuel “sees” Saul. Samuel tells Israel to look upon Saul and “see” their king. Samuel and Israel “see” Saul and they are impressed by his height. But Saul is not a good king and God rejects him. God sends Samuel to anoint a new king. God says he has “seen a new king.” Samuel “sees” Jesses son Eliab and thinks one of these is to be the new king. But God speaks to Samuel and says “God doesnt see as humans see, humans see with their eyes, God sees the heart.” This line is the climax of a whole trail of breadcrumbs that started at the introduction of Saul.

Timothy Unkert is an Emacs user but prefers to use Markdown over Org-mode. Hes posted a video that describes using Markdown in Emacs. Im very much a “different strokes for different folks” type of guy as the Hippies used to say so Im perfectly happy for people to use whatever software works best for them. That said, after watching the video Im at a loss as to why anyone would prefer to write in Markdown. Sure, sometimes you need to write in Markdown for various reasons but to prefer it? Karl Voit has explained at length why Org-mode markup is the best of class.

The first issue is inserting links. Unlike Org-mode the link isnt displayed nicely as a link but instead shows the hard to read markup. Worse, Markdown-mode allows you to enter only a single word for the link description. I almost always want more than a single word (as the two links in this post show) so thats deal breaker for me. Unkert fixes it by editing the actual link markup but thats lame. I suspect that the real problem here may be configuration issue on Unkerts machine or at worst an artifact of the Emacs Markdown implementation.

The issue with link display carries over to other text styling. If you want to italicize a word or phrase, you surround it with a single stars but the result is just the word or phrase surrounded by stars unlike Org that will actually produce italics.

Watch the video. Almost every aspect that Unkert demonstrates suffers in comparison to Org-mode. In one sense, this is unfair to Markdown because these problems are specific to the Emacs implementation but if youre an Emacs user I cant see any reason, other things being equal, to prefer Markdown to Org-mode.

Have you ever wondered what Jesus looked like? Or maybe why the Bible rarely tells us what a person what thinking? Characters in Bible stories are described and portrayed very differently compared to characters in modern stories.
In this episode Tim and Jon discuss character design in the Bible.

The guys start out (0-9:50) showing how our modern tradition of telling every detail about a character in a story, where they are from, what they look like, what their inner thoughts are, comes from Greek story telling tradition. This is the exact opposite of ancient Jewish storytelling. The biblical authors didnt rely on telling you about a character, instead, they would tell you what they did. The characters themselves remain very mysterious. Tim says this lack of detail is done intentionally so the reader has to work for an interpretation.

In the second part of the episode (9:50-21:13), Tim explains the two ways biblical authors use character details. One, a narrator will use “direct characterization.” A specific detail will be given because it is useful in the story. We are told Saul is tall because later, we find out that David is short. We are told Joseph is handsome because later, Potiphars wife attempts to seduce him. Jon asks if this technique is used because the of the constraints of passing stories on pre printing press.
The second way is the names of characters. In Hebrew literature, a characters name represents the very essence of their being and shows their role in the story. Saul means “The one who was asked for” because Israel asked him to be king. The two sons of Naomi in the book of Ruth, their names are Mahlon and Chilion mean “one who is sick” and “to die”. Their only role in the story is to die and set up the plot conflict.

In the third part of the episode, (21:13-25:56) Tim explains that just because a character does something in a story, doesnt mean the author is endorsing the action. Many authors use a minimalist technique of telling the reader the characters choices but not saying why the character made these choices. A famous is example is when Moses kills the Egyptian who was beating the Hebrew. We dont know why Moses killed him, we only know that he did. Biblical narrators refuse to tell us if a character is “good” or “evil” instead they let us decide for ourselves.

In the fourth part of the episode (25:56-end) Jon asks why. Why would biblical authors take the risk of their work being misinterpreted? Tim says the Biblical authors want readers to puzzle over the ambiguities of their stories because it is meant to represent the ambiguities that are inherent in life. The big narrative of the Bible puts meaning and purpose in the world, but individual stories are meant to create a feeling of opaqueness and mystery.

I gave her a Logitech BRIO for her birthday, installed Pop!_OS and set her up with OBS so she can stream her nakedness to the world! She uses Flowblade to edit commissions. Everything works. I couldn't be more proud of her: I never have to play tech support.
The only problem I've found is the performance of the BRIO's drivers on Linux (UVC) vs Windows. She doesn't get 4k output, which is fine, because who streams a camgirl at 4k right? And I think users much prefer the higher framerate of 60 fps at 1080p. BUT there are significant focus hunting issues and that is a huge pain in the ass.
TL;DR: Girlfriend is a camgirl and uses Linux for streaming and video production.

I've been trying to set up a BTRFS system with snapshots similar to the layout that OpenSUSE has, and encountered somewhat of a roadblock. My current subvolume layout is nearly identical to OpenSUSE's, with
@var
being a separate subvolume (so anything in
/var/
is not snapshotted).

However, this has led to some difficulties such as uninstalled packages showing as installed after reverting to a pre-installation snapshot (despite the files no longer being on the system). I assume this is due to
/var/lib/pacman
being excluded from snapshots.

Another issue I had was installed packages not present in the installed and local repo databases after reverting to a pre-uninstallation snapshot, leading to the package being present on my system but not showing in
pacman -Qs <package>
nor
pacman -Ss <package>
(searching the local repo). The only way I could uninstall said package was to reinstall it forcefully, using the
--overwrite
flag in pacman, and then uninstalling it.

For reference, the local repository and its .db file that I use to contain my AUR packages is located at
/var/cache/pacman/aur-local
, alongside the pacman
/pkg
cache directory, where pacman packages go in
/pkg
and my built AUR packages go in
/aur-local
. My cloned PKGBUILDs go into
~/.cache
. With my current setup where the entirety of
/var
is a subvolume, this is excluded from snapshots.

I've seen some example layouts in the Arch wiki and forums, with some citing to make subvolumes for
/var/cache
,
/var/log
,
/var/spool
,
/var/tmp
, and
/var/machines
. Does anyone know what layout is most recommended (in regards to
/var
) to prevent the issues I described above?

   submitted by /u/dallasrage
[link] [comments]

One of the biggest problem is the difficulty using programming tool on the code, because the code is wrapped in org file, programming tools can't access to code.

In order to integrate org babel code to programming tools ecosystem. 2 possible solutions: - import/export solution, like
myuhe/org-gcal.el
. For instance, we compile org file to .java, and recompile .java to .org. But this solution has a lot of drawbacks. When recompile .java to .org, a new org file is generated by the compiler, we lose the data organization, and all the info that are not exported of original org file. - bi-directional synchronisation solution like
dengste/org-caldav
. For instance, only code block of org file is exported to .java file, and all modification on java file will repercut on org code block. This is the best solution for the problem.

However, I don't see either of the 2 solutions used in the org mode literary programming tutorials. But they are used to integrate org agenda to another calendar ecosystem. Is there a reason?

   submitted by /u/terhyrzht
[link] [comments]

In this episode, Tim and Jon go deeper into the themes introduced in our video, “The Law.” What is the purpose of the Old Testament law, and what does it have to do with Christians today? The guys will talk about how the laws were given to the ancient Israelites and how they contribute to a larger narrative about human nature and Gods plan for creation. Theres a lot to unpack here, and theres definitely something we can learn by understanding these ancient commands.

In the first part of the episode (01:28-22:02), the guys talk about some of the issues with calling the first five books of the Bible, or the Torah, “the law.” These books contain laws for the people of Israel, but “torah” actually means teachings or guidance. Even the laws that you do find are usually in a narrative structure.

In the last part of the episode (22:16-47:03), the guys talk about the purpose of the law. The law wasnt given to the whole world; it was given for the covenant people of Israel. The reason they exist was so that Israel would be set apart from other nations and God could bless all of the nations through them.
