I just published version
0.7.0
of the Modus themes. These are my
highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They conform with the WCAG AAA
standard for colour contrast accessibility (a minimum contrast ratio of
7:1 between the foreground and background values). You can find the
packages on ELPA, MELPA, MELPA stable:

modus-operandi-theme
(light)

modus-vivendi-theme
(dark)

Below are the release notes copied verbatim.

Modus Operandi and Modus Vivendi version 0.7.0

By Protesilaos Stavrou info@protesilaos.com on 2020-03-30

This entry documents the changes since version 0.6.0 (2020-03-01). The
present release is the largest to date containing 110 commits.

All changes conform with the primary objective of this project, which is
conformance with the WCAG AAA accessibility standard for colour
contrast. This represents a minimum contrast ratio of 7:1 between a
given combination of foreground and background colours.

All customisation options mentioned herein are off (
nil
) by default.
The projects policy is to offer such features on an “opt-in” basis.
Refer to the README or each themes source code for the names of these
user-facing symbols.

Major refinements to existing face groups

The headline feature of this release is a refined set of colours for
visualising version-control-system differences (“diffs”). The new
colours are less intense than before and are designed to better convey
the meaning of the constructs they apply to. Affected face groups are
those of
magit
and
diff-mode
. A future release will assess how
similar packages, such as
ediff
, can benefit from this work.

The other major set of changes concerns the colours that apply to
fringes (see
fringe-mode
). A new customisation option allows for a
distinct background for the fringes (courtesy of Anders Johansson in
commit 80fb704). The default uses the same colours as the main
buffers background. Building on this effort, fringe indicators, such
as those of
flycheck
now benefit from an entirely new set of
background+foreground colour combinations that are designed
specifically for the fringes.

A new customisation option allows users to render
org-mode
source
blocks in a distinct background colour. The default is to use the
same background as the rest of the buffer. When this option is
enabled, the background colour for the beginning and end line of such
blocks is extended to the end of the window (using the
:extend t

attribute for >= Emacs 27). Older Emacs versions already extend to
the end of the window.

The colour combination that shows the matching parentheses or
delimiters has been reviewed. The commit is fairly small and the
changes are immediately noticeable only to the most discerning of
eyes. Still, the considerations informing the review imposed a
rigorous method. Rather than summarise the findings, interested
readers are advised to refer to commit af3a327: it offers a
comprehensive analysis on the matter.

Note about VC-annotate

Quoting from the relevant note in the projects README:

Due to the unique way `vc-annotate' (`C-x v g') applies colours,
support for its background mode (`vc-annotate-background-mode') is
disabled at the theme level.
Normally, such a drastic measure should not belong in a theme:
assuming the user's preferences is bad practice. However, it has
been deemed necessary in the interest of preserving colour contrast
accessibility while still supporting a useful built-in tool.
If there actually is a way to avoid such a course of action, without
prejudice to the accessibility standard of this project, then please
report as much (or contribute as per the information in the
Contributing section).

Overview of refinements to already supported packages

In this section the notion of “dedicated colours” pertains to colour
values that are reserved for special faces. They are never used for
syntax highlighting or other common scenaria.

Define new background colours for fringe indicators (as noted in the
first section). Apply them to
bm
,
diff-hl
,
git-gutter
,

flycheck
fringe indicators. All such indicators are now made more
visible and work better with the new customisation option for
rendering the fringes in a distinct background.

Define dedicated colours for tab-like interfaces. Currently these
apply only to
centaur-tabs
. The intention is to eventually
implement them to the tab modes that ship with Emacs 27, as well as
any other package that offers such functionality.

Define dedicated colours for actions that “mark” items. Use them in

dired
,
proced
,
gnus
. An accented background is combined with an
accented foreground. The intention is to make the underlying
construct distinct even under circumstances where the marks
background changes, such as when it intersects with
hl-line-mode
or

stripes
: the accented foreground will still be recognisable as a
colour that differs from the main foreground. The use of a bold font
weight further reinforces the intended action.

Refine
dired
faces to account for the new “mark” styles.
Directories are no longer rendered in a bold weight.

Tweak the colours used in the built-in
diary
and
calendar
for
better usability.

Tweak
deadgrep
colours for consistency with packages that offer
similar functionality.

Tweak
compilation-line-number
in the interest of consistency with
similar interfaces.

Use a more appropriate colour for
trailing-whitespace
. It now is a
colour value that was designed specifically as a background.

Expand
fountain-mode
support by covering its new heading faces. The
headings will be presented in larger font sizes, or using proportional
fonts, should the user enable the relevant theme customisation options
(see README or source code).

Remove bold weight from matching parentheses in
show-paren-mode
and

smartparens
. The temporarily applied bold weight can cause
misalignments while using certain fonts. Also apply the new colours
for matching delimiters, as documented in the first section.

Refine
outline-mode
colours to be consistent with those of Orgs
headings.

Several usability and colour refinements for
helm
and related
packages in that milieu.

Remove box property from emphasis markers in the mode line. It
created inconsistencies with other faces.

Refine the colours used in Magit logs,
change-log
,
log-view
. They
are meant to be more distinct from their context, without drawing too
much attention to themselves.

Minor internal fixes for indentation and the like.

Miscellaneous changes and concluding remarks

Add section in the README which documents a legal requirement for all
potential non-trivial code contributions: the need to assign copyright
to the Free Software Foundation. The Modus Themes are now distributed
via the official GNU ELPA repository and copyright over them is
assigned to the FSF.

Add CHANGELOG file which consolidates all tagged release notes such as
this one.

Add new screen shots to the relevant Wiki page, together with detailed
descriptions on what is being demonstrated:
https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/wikis/Screenshots

Special thanks to Manuel Uberti for reporting several issues and
offering feedback where appropriate. I was able to add support for lots
of new packages. While a few among the already supported face groups
underwent tweaks and refinements. The
helm
ecosystem benefited the
most.

Thanks to Anders Johansson for the patch that introduced the
fringes-related customisation option. It inspired me to reconsider the
use of this particular area of the interface, which eventually led to
the barrage of commits that refashioned the fringe indicators. A major
win overall.

Thanks to Jonathan Otsuka for fixing an error of mine on the naming of
some symbols. My apologies for missing it: I will be more careful from
now on.

Note: both patches were small, requiring no copyright assignment.
Larger contributions are always welcome, though make sure you read the
section in the README with regard to assigning copyright to the Free
Software Foundation.

Where I work, we use a lot of Markdown and Confluence pages for documentation. I have wanted to introduce org-mode, but am always met with some (justified) resistance. We're talking about introducing a programming editor to mid-senior level programmers. That is a very tough sell. I've been keeping my eyes open for possible alternatives, like org-mode for VS Code and org-mode for Vim. I think this presentation given at the Emacs Conference a couple of days ago captures the "spirit" of what would be needed to get others who insist on using the "lesser editors" to use org-mode. https://emacsconf.org/2021/talks/org-outside/

   submitted by /u/trhawes
[link] [comments]

After last weeks discussion in the after show about Gnome 40 and some of the interface changes being made, we couldn’t help but compare those changes to one of the most beloved operating system of it’s time. In this episode, we’re going to talk about this OS to find out why so many on the show consider it one of the greatest mobile Operating Systems ever. In addition, we’re going to check out some new goals and updates coming to Tails in 2021. Plus we’ve also got our famous tips, tricks and software picks. All of this and so much more this week on Destination Linux.

Nyxt release 1.3.3

After another short but intense development cycle, we are happy to announce the availability of Nyxt version 1.3.3!

This version brings outstanding and unique features (again!). It is also easier to install on GNU/Linux thanks to a Debian package. Please see all installation options on the download page.

New features

Multiple input selection

Until now, Nyxt's prompt was able to ask the user for one choice among a list (with fuzzy completion). Now, for commands that support it, the user can select multiple candidates and apply an action on all of them (for example, to delete many buffers at once). We can filter and narrow the selection with a text input, and we can select all the visible candidates or unselect the current ones.

The default bindings are:

C-SPACE
to toggle the mark of an entry.

M-a
to mark all visible entries.

M-u
to unmark all visible entries.

Furthermore, when the input is changed and the candidates are re-filtered, the selection is not altered, even if the marked elements are not visible. We can add-up the selections.

For example, if we have several Wikipedia and Stack Overflow pages open, and we want to close them, we can do the following:

Press
C-x k
(Emacs bindings) or
d
(vim bindings) or call
M-x delete-buffer
.

In the list of current buffers, type "wikip" and witness the list will shrink down. Type
M-a
to mark all the Wikipedia buffers.

Erase the input and filter with
stack
, press
M-a
again.

Press
Enter
.

How efficient is that!?

Of course should you wish, you always have the possibility to write your own
delete-lots-of-buffers
command :-)

Bookmarks, tags and compound queries

Now with Nyxt, you can tag your bookmarks and filter them with compound selectors.

When you bookmark a new page (
C-m s
or
m M
vi-mode or
M-x
bookmark-page
), you are asked for a list of space-separated tags.

When about to open a bookmark (
C-m o
,
m o
,
M-x set-url-from-bookmark
), you can fuzzy-filter the list and also filter them with tag selectors: use
+
,
-
or start a compound selector with
(
in which you can use
and
,
or
and
not
.

Examples:

+lisp -blog
+blog (or lisp emacs)
+foo -bar (or (and john doe) (not (and tic tac)))

Additionally, the bookmarks are now saved in text format, more precisely, in s-expressions. You can easily read and edit them with another tool of your choice. In fact, we have a user who syncs them to a Github repository already.

Password manager

Nyxt 1.3.3 provides a password manager interface to KeepassXC or Pass.

See the commands
save-new-password
and
copy-password
.

Credits go to Solomon Bloch (@noogie13).

Session persistence

The user session is now automatically persisted. Close Nyxt, and find all your buffers open on subsequent starts.

You can also quit without saving it with
M-x quit-after-clearing-session
, or program Nyxt to adapt it to your liking. Maybe with hooks this time.

Clone Git repositories

Nyxt 1.3.3 introduces the
vcs-clone
(alias
git-clone
) command to clone Git repositories to disk. It asks for the destination and then runs asynchronously. It has a few configuration options, see the manual.

We see this new command as a simple preview of what is possible with Nyxt, as we can interface with the host system rather easily. We are excited to work more on developer helpers in the future, and to see what you'll come up with.

Download videos

Another utility is the new
download-video
command, which will download the video at the current URL. It is at the moment a wrapper around the youtube-dl program, which you must first install.

After the download, you can open your video with the
open-file
command (
C-x C-f
).

See the manual for more documentation and configuration options.

Reopen closed tabs

The new command
reopen-buffer
(bound to
C-/
, or
u
with VI bindings) will ask for a buffer from the most recently closed ones. It supports multiple selection. And
reopen-last-buffer
will work without a prompt.

Credits go to
4t0m
.

Faster and improved fuzzy completion

Our minibuffer can now match against typos and has much improved performance (no more hang after some 15 input characters…).

The rules are as follows:

When any of the input strings does not match any candidate, Nyxt will try to match against possible typos.

When any of the input strings matches exactly

Example in
execute-command
(
M-x
):

buffer
would filter out all commands that don't contain the string "buffer".

swt buffer
would do as above, then try its best to guess which of the remaining commands matches "swt" more.

View the buffer history (as a tree)

Early versions of Nyxt have supported tree based history. However, until now, visualizing the whole history tree has been difficult.

Nyxt 1.3.3 introduces the command
buffer-history-tree
to view it in HTML:

The keys
C-b
and
C-f
(
history-backwards
and
history-forwards
) are the "usual" ones.
M-b
and
M-f
(
history-backwards-query
and
history-forwards-query
) show the buffer history and ask for an url.

There is also
history-all-query
(
C-M-b
) that is self-explanatory and
history-forwards-maybe-query
that will "do the right thing", that is, ask for input only if there is ambiguity.

New command line argument: no-init

The command line argument
--no-init
or
-Q
will allow you to start Nyxt without loading your init file.

Changes in configuration settings (alias "functional configuration system")

A new style of configuration is available allowing for a "functional" style of configuration. To know more about it, check out our discussion on GitHub.

What's next ?

We have a ton of ideas, as you certainly will the second you try Nyxt. We worked on it full time on our own resources for the last few months, however, they are limited. We might need to look for a real job. We don't see ourselves doing so much again if we can only devote a fraction of our time to it. That's why we launched the Indiegogo campaign. You are warmly invited to join in to make it a success (even with a small donation, the number of participants is also meaningful to us). Thank you!

A few days ago I released version 1.2.0 of setup.el. I had mentioned this package earlier this year, when commenting on abandoning
use-package
and a literate configuration (at that point I had already stopped using both for a about a year).

I would like to use this post to explain what improvements and changes have been made since, and perhaps what I would like to see in the future.

If you are not familiar with setup.el, I have an online explanation on EmacsWiki.

Since releasing version 0.1.2 last March, a few notable improvements have been made:

Adding Xref support for jumping to local macro definitions. Immediate discoverability is a critical feature to learn how a system works, and having the definition of any special construct just a
M-.
away (even though they dont work that way), makes these seem more native.

Adding the ability to customize how
setup
-macro expansions are modified, outside of the macro (see
setup-modifier-list
). E.g. This allows wrapping each body in a
with-demoted-errors
macro, so that an issue in a setup expression doesnt abort the startup process.

Allowing packages to hint what the mode, map, hook, etc. are. A macro like
(:with-mode foo-mode ...)
would check the symbol property
setup-hook
of
foo-mode
to use
foo-special-hook
instead of the automatically inferred
foo-mode-hook
.

If a package wishes to simplify the setup.el they can add a

;;;autoload
(put 'foo-mode 'setup-hook 'foo-speical-hook)

Adding more macros such as
:if-package
(that will only evaluate the rest of the setup form if the package was manually installed) and
:bind-into
. At the same time other macros from earlier versions have been removed (or rather moved to EmacsWiki).

A few months ago I decided to move some of the documentation from the git repository to EmacsWiki. I like the Wiki-approach to documentation, as I think it make contributing easier, at the expense of not having the documentation in Emacs. I think this is bearable, considering that EmacsWiki is still readable in
eww
.

The probably most important section of the wiki is “Additional Macros”. It has been a delight to see the section being extended and improved by setup.el users, contributing their own macros for others to use and adapt to their own needs. This seems preferable to making setup.el a kitchen-sink and creating the expectation that everything should be upstreamed. Everyone has their own taste and their own needs, defining your own macros is the best way to cater to these.

Looking forward, I would like to add support for Eldoc (with understanding of the context) and see other packages making use of context hints.

Of all the Emacs packages I currently actively maintain (shell-commnand+, vc-backup, compat), I still think that setup is the most interesting. It is also the one that is the hardest to explain and the one that the most people contact me about. I am glad to see others interested in the package and am hopeful to see more people discover and perhaps use the package in the future.

So, I was working in an
org
file with tables that needed to reference tables from different files. According to the org manual, you can do this with
remote(<id>, <range>)
. This is problematic for a couple of reasons. First, it is very fragile. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Maybe I was doing something wrong with the IDs, but it was very unstable for me. Second, it means that, if you sync your org files in multiple machines, you'll also have to sync the id. Finally, and this is the big one, accoring to the org manual, you assing an ID to a heading and the remote call will look for the first table under that heading. But what if you need the second table?

Instead of fighting with the IDs problem, I decided to do some elisp magic to see if I could grab a table range from a remote table with file path and
#:name
. To my surpirse, it was very easy to do. All you need is this function somewhere in your init file:

(defun j/remote-table-range (path name range) (with-current-buffer (find-file-noselect path) (org-table-get-remote-range name range)))

Then, you have to add the
#:name
tag to the remote table:

;; Contents of ~/table-test/remote.org #+name: remote-t1 | C1 | C2 | | 1 | 2 |

Then, from another table, you can call it like this:

;; Contents of ~/table-test/main.org | C1 | C2 | | | | #+tblfm: @1$1='(j/remote-table-range "./remote.org" "remote-t1" (string ?@ ?1 ?$ ?1))

The path can be absolute or relative, and you can reference any table in that file using the name argument. The wierd string call is explained here.

And that's it. IMO, while it makes for longer formulas, it is way more convenient than the current remote function with IDs and have less limitations.

I was amazed with how little code was needed for this. Man, do I love emacs...

   submitted by /u/ElCondorHerido
[link] [comments]

The php package has been updated to version 8.0. Please refer to
the upstream migration guide. As some applications are not
compatible with PHP 8 yet we provide a php7 package which can be
installed alongside version 8. Packages that depend on PHP reflect
this update and will require php7 if needed. You might need to update
your configuration accordingly. PHP 7 binaries and configuration have
the "7" suffix:
