By default, it seems that Guix installs the EFI bootloader to "EFI/Guix/grubx64.efi".

I want to specify the location in config.scm, so that Guix installs the bootloader to the standard "EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI", where even the dumbest UEFI implementations will find it automatically.

My imperative solution is to manually move the EFI file after every Guix update, but that is easy to forget. I'd rather solve the problem declaratively with Guix. I could not find any way to specify the bootloader location in the Guix manual, so I'm asking here.

I am also curious if Guix supports installing both a BIOS bootloader and an EFI bootloader simultaneousy (I haven't tested it yet). I used to do this on OpenBSD because it maximizes my chances of being able to boot successfully on any x86_64 system.

   submitted by /u/less-to-worry-about
[link] [comments]

This is another episode in our How to Read the Bible Series. Today Tim and Jon discuss literary design patterns in the Bible.

In part 1 (0-12:27), the guys discuss the ways Bible stories often pattern after each other. Tim explains that he is working on a project with other Bible scholars studying how many biblical stories build on each other.

Tim says many Bible stories are set up in parallel, to replay key themes the writers are trying to make. Jon provides a real life example of Toy Story 3. The Toy Story 3 writers watched dozens of prison break movies in order to write the “daycare/prison break out” scene in Toy Story 3. Tim says that’s a good example of a layering technique being used in modern day. The classic prison break is layered into a children’s movie.

In part 2 (12:27-19:15), Tim says the biblical authors were very intentional about building an entire universe of meaning in the biblical stories themselves. There are thousands of hidden “hyperlinks” of key repeated words, phrases and repeated characters that link all Bible stories together. There is no such thing as an isolated story in the Bible. An example of Bible stories linking together is David and Bathsheba and the eating of the apple in Genesis. In Hebrew, it says “(Bathsheba) was good of sight, very.” Tim says this links back to Adam and Eve seeing the “fruit was good of sight” which links back to God saying things were “good, very good.” So the reader is supposed to ponder upon who decides what “good” is in these stories. David? God? Adam and Eve?

In part 3 (19:15-26:46), the guys dive into the creation story at the beginning of the Bible. Tim says Genesis 1 is set up in a very unique way. Tim says the fundamental image of chaos is dark, untamed waters. Jon offers an interesting comment about a new shark species that was recently discovered in the dark ocean. Tim outlines the first three days as the separation of realms. (Day 1) separating light from dark, (day 2) separating water from water, (day 3) separating water from dry land. Then the next three days, 4,5,6 are the creation of inhabitants of the realms in the first three days.

In part 4 (26:46-35:18), Tim says, the creation account is presented in such a way that God separates the chaotic waters to create a stable habitation where humans can live. Thinking about the Biblical authors desire to layer stories on each other, Where else does this theme of God separating waters appear in the Bible?

All over the Bible.

The story of Noah is depicted as the “de-creation” of the world. The world sinks back into “chaotic waters.” God remembers Noah and causes a “ruach to to pass over the land” just like the original creation story, he is separating the waters from the land and re-creating a habitation for humans.

In part 5 (35:18-end), Tim asks Jon “what was God doing with all this separating?” Jon and Tim discuss how the cause of creation descending back into chaos is human evil. Humans choose violence, bringing the world back to a place where God turns it over to chaos.

The next story where God tames the waters to rescue his people is the Exodus story. God “remembers Israel” when they cry out about their oppression in Egypt just as he “remembers Noah”. Tim says when Israel crosses the Red (Reed) Sea, it merges days 2 and 3 in creation. Moses splits/separates the waters to reveal dry land. Israel also passes through the waters, saved by God, just as Noah passed through the waters, saved by God.

Jon asks what’s the purpose of telling stories like this is. Jon is confused, is salvation really this complicated? What does all this mean for the modern person? Tim tells Jon to be patient, and that the ultimate end of the flood and water imagery in the Bible is the Christian tradition of baptism.

I'm always amused when I hear someone testify by saying they “found Jesus." Jesus wasn't lost, I remind them. We were. The good news of the gospel is Jesus has found us.

Christianity isn't a list of ten easy steps to get to God. The radical news is that in Christ, God has come to us. The Bible is filled with the stories of God's relentless pursuit of humankind. Sheep don't find the shepherd. The shepherd finds the sheep.

Have you ever been lost? I mean really lost? You have no idea where you are or how you got there. You don't know how to get back to where you started much less find the place you were going. So, you call your friend, the person you were going to meet, and what do they ask you? "Where are you?" Of course, if I knew where I was, I wouldn't be lost!

After a frustrating few minutes of trying to tell your friend where you are, a good friend will finally say, "Stay where you are and I'll come to you."

That's the good news of Christmas. God has said to us, "Stay where you are. I'll come to you."

And His Presence changes everything. The place we were lost becomes the place where we are found. The place where we came to our end now becomes the place we started over.

You've almost certainly all heard this sentence before. As a new Emacs user and someone who does want to really get to know Emacs, I want to hear about all the pros and cons I have heard so far, from you guys. I'm really surprised how friendly this community is. I've never seen a more friendly online group ever.

I am the guy that asked about "Emacs-Lisp functions beneath the surface" a few days ago.

Anyway, I was watching this video and there is something that caught my attention more than anything else. And that is the sentence at 14:00 :

" Emacs is 12 MB, core with none of the Lisp extensions."

Is this really true? Why is Emacs considered a bloat Software, in some communities, then? 12 MB doesn't seem much.

And what do people mean when they say that Emacs is bloat or memory intensive? Is the core bloated?
There are definitely people that are more for debating than actually addressing problems or having a discussion. So I'm really curious, is it that there is actually a real reason they are saying it, or is it just that it's a common "saying" of Vim users and users who find Emacs "too difficult"?

Or is it that an average user uses so many packages that Emacs becomes CPU and/or memory intensive?

What do you consider a bloat software?
Also, even the guy in the video said that at 18:20:

"All these things that people have said about Emacs having a big footprint and being memory intensive blah blah blah it's all true"

I would love to hear your perspective on this commonly brought up "contention".

   submitted by /u/aqua_cap
[link] [comments]

Hi there. I am a new Emacs user, trying it after using Vim for a year or so.I'd say it's ambitious, but I've started from scratch. I didn't want to go with Spacemacs or Doom Emacs.

Configuring init.el file got me thinking - What are all those functions? I know that ELisp is a dialect of a programming language called LISP, but knowing many languages ELisp seems so strange. It's absolutely peculiar.

You all know that Python has been considered a "pseudo code" language in which you almost tell in human English what do you want to achieve.I actually believe that ELisp falls under that description much better.

I don't understand what all those functions are doing below the surface. It seems to me that if I'd want to make a AI Chess game by my own rules, that the only thing I'd need to write in ELisp, would be:

(setq AI-chess-my-own-rules t)

And that would be it.
Can I see the implementation of each function I have put in my init.el?How does, for example:

(load theme 'doom-gruvbox)

work?

Can I see the implementation? Or (scroll-bar-mode -1)? How does that work? Does that tells the X to stop drawing the scroll-bar in Emacs? What is the language that those functions are written in, and where could I see, inside or outside of Emacs, the implementation of it?

And how is it possible that I can type a name of any function written in ELisp and it will just work? Aren't there any libraries? How does that work?

I believe these are trivial questions for you, but I am really new in this. I fell in love with the Org mode, but Emacs seems so strange. I got used to parenthesis, I get it - That's the syntax. Fine. I don't have a problem with it. But it's absolutely different than any other language I've ever used.

Thanks in advance for replies. :)

   submitted by /u/aqua_cap
[link] [comments]

Today we want to dive into the topic of browsers. Browsers are a crucial part of any PC experience today whether corporate or on the desktop. Yet, the competition for alternatives to Chrome are growing smaller by the year. In this episode we dive into some new offerings and ask the question what Firefox could do to take back some of the browser market. Later in the show, we’re also covering how open-source is now set to take over the telecom industry . . . thanks to Facebook? Plus we’ve also got our famous tips, tricks and software picks. All of this and so much more this week on Destination Linux.
