I have an 7 year old laptop with amd graphic and Intel i5 3rd gen cpu. It doesn't have an Intel integrated graphics. I am dual booting this device with windows 8.1 and arch Linux. Yesterday the screen started to flicker and cause a white screen after the GPU service started to running(systemd log during boot ) during the boot. Faced the same GPU issue windows 8.1 also. I somehow managed to safeboot the device and completely uninstall the AMD Radeon graphics drivers. Now I can able to boot in to windows without screen flicker issues. It is now using some Microsoft basic display adapter driver. Don't have GPU acceleration or brightness control which normal since I have disabled the damaged GPU.

Now I am looking for a similar setup in arch Linux . I want to boot into arch with a disabled GPU. I am running arch linux with gnome de. I tried it with "nomodeset" and "radeon.modeset=0" kernel parameters but with no luck. I can't still able to boot in to gdm. I could able access a tty via short keys. Is it possible disable the GPU and boot into arch ? Sorry for my bad english.

   submitted by /u/NiyasTk
[link] [comments]

Long story short, pinentry hung emacs badly , no way to get back it ..completeley frozen . Only way get back emacs is kill it and restart .

Longer version :

Emacs: 27.0.2 ...( compiled from source ...accessed from common location ...lvm drive..GNU Emacs), GUI environment.

OS : Gentoo, Slackware,Debian,Arch,Tumbleweed

Two specific things:

1) If I started pinentry from my .emacs/init.el file while emacs start up ,it is start up fine and after sometime it ask for passphrase and once entered , the damn thing got frozen....heck

2) Not starting like above ,but invoke pinentry-start from the minibuffer before doing anything needs to be done with gpg.

Okay, it stays little more longer than the 1 st one . But..but ..once the initial passphrase given everything works fine....again soon after it prompt for second time(after several mintute) and once this time entered the passphrase ...bang! It frozen to death. Only way to rescue , kill and restart ...such a annoying thing ....

What I did?

Check the system log ,when it frozen and nothing apprear related to that hung ....

Heads up! if I do not run pinentry, no trouble ..no hang ups ..nothing ...so narrowing down to that damn package ...

Message buffer shows no sign of hiccup (although it accessed after restart ...no point it seems ..still) ..

Before you give slitest care to look in and give me some respite ....GPG is serious kind of pain in the arse ....unfortunately , this is the best kind we have at this moment and damn workflow badly integrated with it. ( I have other horrific story about it..not related to emacs ...but some other time) .

Last, let me know , if you need anything specific from me to pinpoint the trouble.

   submitted by /u/unixbhaskar
[link] [comments]

We are happy to announce Nyxt 2.2.0. Lot's of new features and architectural changes!

Change log:

2.2.0

New
changelog
command.

New
show-qrcode-of-current-url
command. (Thanks to @ag91!)

New
view-source
command.

New
edit-user-file-with-external-editor
command.

New
summarize-buffer
command.

Macro editor: interactively record command macros with
edit-macro

. Macros can be saved to the
auto-config.lisp
file.

New action for the
switch-buffer
command to delete selected
buffers.

Support for GTK clipboard. (Thanks to @shamazmazum!)

Deprecated commands no longer show in the
execute-command
list.

New
titler
window slot to allow customizing the window title.

jump-to-heading
now also lists content keywords.

Various manual and tutorial improvements and fixes. (Thanks to @pdelfino!)

Deprecate
paste-or-set-url
.

Replace
copy-system-information
with

show-system-information
.

Don't forward printable characters in vi-normal-mode.

Concretely, pressing an unbound letter won't insert it in an HTML input.

New VI status and prompt buffer indicator. (Thanks to @edgar-vincent!)

Both the status area and the prompt buffer now display a colored indicator for

vi-normal-mode
and
vi-insert-mode
.

New navigation commands:
go-previous
,
go-next
,

go-up
,
go-to-homepage
.

Password commands set the default input to the current host.

Anonymous commands are now allowed in keybindings (e.g. with

make-command
).

describe-variable
can now describe compound values recursively,
such as lists of variables.

execute-extended-command
performs type checking and prefills
default values.

Backward-incompatible changes

Updated
cl-webkit
to version 3.0.0.

webkit2:webkit-web-view-evaluate-javascript
lambda list changed.

We've introduced an API-breaking change to the
nyxt/history-tree

library: now all its call points take an owner as parameter. This has allowed us
to fix the constant history corruptions.

Element hinting overhaul

It should be now faster, better integrated and more exhaustive (such as
drop-down buttons).

A new DOM parser has been developed. As a result, much of the former
Parenscript code has been replaced by pure Lisp code.

New 'panel' buffers.

Panel buffers can be used to display arbitrary information on the side of a
window. A few new commands are thus introduced:

show-bookmarks-panel

show-buffers-panel

delete-panel-buffer

Prompt buffer

Input area no longer stutters when updating the display.

Key press responsiveness has been dramatically improved.

The prompt is properly refreshed when pasting to it.

Bind
M-space
to
resume-prompt
to make it more
useful.

It's particularly useful to resume a search.

Bind
C-M-space
to
execute-extended-command
.

It makes it easier for users to execute commands and supply parameters.

Status area

Clicking on modes now describes them.

New '+' button to toggles modes.

Arbitrary HTML is now allowed for mode glyphs.

Support for buffer tree relationships

switch-buffer-previous
and
switch-buffer-next

browse the buffer tree in a depth-first fashion.

New
switch-buffer-last
command to easily switch back and forth
between the 2 most recent buffers.

list-buffers
can now display the the buffers as a tree.

Platform support

Fix slow buffer and prompt-buffer creation on FreeBSD. (Thanks to
@shamazmazum!)

Bug fixes

Various fixes with the password manager commands.

Don't crash when an error occurs in a GTK signal.

Start up errors due to flawed user init files now lead to a restart of Nyxt
without init file.

Fix endless compilation of =tutorial.lisp= when SBCL dynamic space size to
low.

cl-markup
was replaced by
spinneret
.

Fix potential dead-lock in
restore-history-buffers
.

Fix
buffer-history-tree
that showed a truncated tree.

Is it OK for Linux distros to default to proprietary software when there are great free and open source alternatives?

WANT TO SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
💰 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/distrotube
💳 Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=derek%40distrotube%2ecom&lc=US&item_name=DistroTube&no_note=0¤cy_code=USD&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF%3abtn_donateCC_LG%2egif%3aNonHostedGuest
🛍️ Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RotFFi
👕 Teespring: https://teespring.com/stores/distrotube

DONATE CRYPTO:
💰 Bitcoin: 1Mp6ebz5bNcjNFW7XWHVht36SkiLoxPKoX
🐶 Dogecoin: D5fpRD1JRoBFPDXSBocRTp8W9uKzfwLFAu
📕 LBC: bMfA2c3zmcLxPCpyPcrykLvMhZ7A5mQuhJ

SOCIAL PLATFORMS:
🗨️ Mastodon: https://distrotoot.com/@derek
👫 Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/DistroTube/
📽️ LBRY/Odysee: https://odysee.com/$/invite/@DistroTube:2

DT ON THE WEB:
🕸️ Website: http://distrotube.com/
🐿️ Gemini Capsule: gemini://distro.tube
📁 GitLab: https://gitlab.com/dwt1

FREE AND OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE THAT I USE:
🌐 Brave Browser - https://brave.com/dis872
📽️ Open Broadcaster Software: https://obsproject.com/
🎬 Kdenlive: https://kdenlive.org
🎨 GIMP: https://www.gimp.org/
🎵 Ardour: https://ardour.org/
💻 VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/
🗒️ Doom Emacs: https://github.com/hlissner/doom-emacs

Your support is very much appreciated.
Advent in Contested Territory: God with us

A tiny, nonliving entity, with the power to kill, invaded bodies and sent us fleeing. Safety was separation, community was danger. Quarantine defined life. It was necessary to detach so we might live. All was beyond our control. Where was God in our death, isolation, division, and fear

Christians enter the season of Advent knowing that Jesus, the God-Human, came to rescue the world. A world overrun by inescapable darkness: God’s good creation was the occupied territory of Sin and Death. The people of God longed for God’s promised intervention. Hope for liberation persisted.

Jesus is God’s deliverance: the rescuing Savior, the chosen Messiah, the ruling Lord.[1] His purpose was to “bring good news to the poor… proclaim release to the captives and sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[2] The inescapable darkness became more than merely escapable. The reigning control of Sin and Death was utterly severed by Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

In this screen cast I showcase some of the features of BASH for
manipulating variables, aka “parameters”. Parameter expansion is a very
powerful feature. Mastering it should greatly improve your shell
scripting skills (see the GNU Bash
manual).

Started applying this knowledge to the scripts that are distributed with

my dotfiles, in

preparation of the next beta version of “Prot’s Dots For Debian” (which

I introduced in the previous

Below I include the code samples shown in this screen cast.

First demo script:

Second example:

#!/bin/bash

Alex, Drew from ChooseLinux, and Brent (of the Brunch fame) sit down with Antonio Musumeci, the developer of mergerfs during the JB sprint. It is a union filesystem geared towards simplifying storage and management of files across numerous commodity storage devices, it is similar to mhddfs, unionfs, and aufs.

mergerfs makes JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Drives) appear like an ‘array’ of drives. mergerfs transparently translates read/write commands to the underlying drives from a single mount point, such as /mnt/storage. Point all your applications at /mnt/storage and forget about how the underlying storage is architected, mergerfs handles the rest transparently. Multiple mismatched size drives? No problem.

Special Guest: Antonio Musumeci.

Links:

The Perfect Media Server 2017

Mergerfs - another good option to pool your SnapRAID disks

mergerfs: a featureful union filesystem
