This episode continues our series on the development of God as a character in the Bible. This week Tim and Jon have part two of their conversation on Gods attributes used as a character. They discuss Gods Spirit, Gods wisdom, and Gods word.

In part one (0 - 33:05), the guys briefly recap last weeks discussion on “Gods Glory.” Then Tim outlines the attribute of Gods word. Tim outlines the first story where “Gods word” is used. Genesis 15:1: "After these things the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying, 'Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.'"

“The word” is the subject of the verbs (“came” “spoke”). it is “seen” in a vision, and it speaks in first-person divine speech. Tim says that often this nuance gets overlooked, that Gods word appeared in visible form. Its depicted as a character that can appear to someone. Tim says the point is that often times the weird wording is intentional and should not be overlooked.

Tim shares another story in the Old Testament about Gods word. 1 Samuel 3:1-7: "Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And the word of Yahweh was rare in those days, visions were infrequent… and Samuel was lying down in the temple of Yahweh where the ark of God was… then Yahweh called Samuel; and he said, 'Here I am.' Then he ran to Eli and said, 'Here I am, for you called me.' But he said, 'I did not call, lie down again.' So he went and lay down. Now Samuel did not yet know Yahweh, nor had the word of Yahweh yet been revealed [lit. “made visible”] to him…. Then Yahweh came and stood and called as at other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' And Samuel said, 'Speak, for Your servant is listening.'"

Tim shares a final story on Gods word. Jeremiah 1:1-9: “The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah...to whom the word of Yahweh came… [v.4] Now the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…' [v.6] Then I said 'O Yahweh Elohim, I dont know how to speak, Im just a youth…' [v.7] Then Yahweh said to me, 'Dont say Im just a youth…' [v.9] Then Yahweh stretched out his hand and touched my mouth and Yahweh said to me, 'Look I have put my words in your mouth.'"

Tim says the point is that in all of these passages, Yahweh and Yahwehs word are the same, and yet distinct. Yahwehs word is a physical embodiment (it can appear, be seen, it has hands, etc.).

So in light of all of this new information, lets go back to Genesis 1:1-3: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God spoke, 'Let there be light'; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness."

Gods identity has three facets in this opening scene:
God, Gods ruakh (breath, invisible presence), and God's word. Tim then draws attention to Psalm 33:6, 9: “By the word of Yahweh the heavens were made, all their hosts by the ruakh of his mouth… For he spoke, and it was, He commanded, and it stood.”

Tim moves on to discuss Gods Spirit. Gods Spirit is his invisible personal presence, that is God himself as he is experienced by people and personally present in the world. Gods Spirit influences and works through human agents, especially these type of people in the Bible:

Prophets: Micah 3:8: "On the other hand I am filled with power—with the Spirit of Yahweh—and with justice and courage, to make known to Jacob his rebellious act, even to Israel his sin."

Kings: 1 Samuel 16:13: "Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily upon David from that day forward."

Wise people: Genesis 41:38-39: (Joseph) “Pharaoh said to his servants, 'Where else can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of Gods? … There is no one with wisdom or understanding like him.'”

Artists and Leaders: Exodus 31:1-4: (Bezalel) “Then Yahweh said to Moses, 'Look I have chosen Bezalel...and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom and understanding, with knowledge and skills, to make designs in gold and silver…'"
Deuteronomy 34:9: (Joshua) “Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the Spirit of Wisdom.”

Gods Spirit = the divine thoughts and purposes = “mind”
Isaiah 40:13-14: "Who has measured the ruakh of Yahweh, And who has informed him with advice? With whom did He take counsel, to be given knowledge? Who taught him...knowledge, or who informed him with understanding?" Notice this close connection between God's Spirit and Gods wisdom.

Jon makes a fun analogy by pretending hes a gerbil. If he was a gerbil and he were to see Tim as a human, he would only understand limited ways that Tim interacted with him. So similarly, when biblical authors experienced God through one of his attributes, they recognized that it wasn't God in his entirety but rather an aspect of him with which humans have been able to interact.

In part two (33:05-46:10), Tim continues to outline Gods Spirit. Jon says that he doesnt think of his presence or mind as an attribute. So why is Gods presence/Spirit considered an attribute?
The guys have a brief discussion on the different ideas in philosophy and science asking, “Is our mind distinct from our ourselves, or is it ourselves?" Tim comments that its hard for a modern person to have an understanding of God, a being with a mind, but with no known “hardware.”

In part three (46:10-52:30), Tim outlines Gods wisdom. Tim says that all of the attributes are designed to flow in an out of each other. So when someone acts under or with Gods Spirit, they are also acting with Gods wisdom.
Tim says in the Bible, Gods wisdom is depicted as an influential urban woman who calls out to humanity. This is literary personification. Proverbs 8: 8:1-2: “Doesnt wisdom call out, and understanding offer her voice. At the top of the heights, by the crossroads she stands…” 8:15-16 “By means of me kings reign, and leaders make just laws. By means of me rulers rule, and officials, and all those who rule with justice.” 8:22-23: "Yahweh possessed me at the beginning of his way, before any of his works of old. From ancient times I was appointed, from the beginning, from the oldest times…" 8:30" “I was beside him as an amon, I was delighting day by day, rejoicing before him.”

"Amon" is an ambiguous word, used only here in ancient Hebrew and is capable of multiple interpretations. It could mean “workman," "apprentice,” but also “child," "nursing-child.”

In part four (52:30-end), the guys jump into the New Testament, specifically John 1. Tim says Gods word, Spirit, wisdom, and Genesis 1 are all creatively retold in John 1, but now Jesus is the central character.
In this first chapter, John says as clearly as he can that Jesus is Yahweh, but he is also distinct from Yahweh.

Jon asks what "only begotten son" means in the Bible? Tim answers that there have been lots of debates over time. The phrase comes from the Greek phrase, "monogenís gios." Some have suggested that it means “the only born son," whereas other theologians have suggested it means “only of its kind.” Tim suggests that people shift their language away from “only begotten” to something like “Jesus is the one and only unique son of all the spiritual beings because he actually shares in Gods identity and is one with God.”

Tim offers that in pop culture, often times people are skeptical of the idea of “the trinity.” They think that because the word “trinity” doesnt appear in the Bible, it might be a later invention of Christianity.

We have a few big announcements to share today, but first, a recap of the pre-order campaign. Its been just a month since we launched Framework Laptop pre-orders, and weve been amazed by the incredible response and interest. Batch 1 is sold out for the Base and Performance versions, and there are just a few Professional units left available shipping in July. Weve opened up Batch 2 pre-orders shipping in August, with only a fully refundable $100 deposit due today. Weve been busy staging material and preparing our manufacturing line for the mass production ramp, and were looking forward to building your laptop soon.

Expansion Card Developer Program

A core part of the Framework design philosophy is the idea that products should be deeply customizable to meet your needs, so weve built the Framework Laptop to be modifiable in ways no other notebook can be. The Expansion Card system is a perfect example of that. You can switch ports and add functionality to your Framework Laptop at any time by swapping out any of the four cards. Weve developed a range of Expansion Cards ourselves, but the real magic of this modularity comes from opening card development to the world. Were happy to announce the launch of the Expansion Card Developer Program to enable that. Weve released documentation, CAD templates, and reference designs for Expansion Cards, all under open source licenses to make it easy for both hardware companies and individual makers to create new card designs. This is all downloadable today from our GitHub repository.

$100K in Grants, Discounts, and Hardware

To make it even easier to go from great idea to prototype to production, were funding $100,000 of grants, discounts, and hardware over the next year for Expansion Card developers to kick off the ecosystem. Developers who have a design ready for prototyping can reach out to us to apply for a grant to fund manufacturing of a batch and optionally hardware to use for testing. For prototypes that look especially promising, well work with the developer to create a product page in the Framework Marketplace to capture interest and later even help fund mass production. We cant wait to see the fantastic cards that come out of the creativity of the community to make the Framework Laptop even better.

Pre-Orders Now Available in Canada

Finally, Framework Laptop pre-orders are now open in Canada, starting at CAD $1,299 for the Base configuration with only a fully refundable CAD $100 deposit due today. The shipping dates are the same as for the US, with Batch 2 shipping in August and a limited quantity of Batch 1 Professional systems still available for July shipment. Well continue to add additional countries later this year. We cant wait to get a Framework Laptop out to you!

The next issue I ran into was more complex. After fixing the packages, I wanted to browse my home folder on the Mac with Dired. I got an error that stated:
"Listing directory failed but 'access-file' worked"
. Huh? Whats that about?

When contents of a folder fails to list on a Mac, especially on more recent macOS versions, it usually means theres a permission issue. In Catalina and Big Sur, even the Native Terminal app needs explicit access to the hard drive from the user. I always found this odd, but I guess I can see why: if you dont know what the Terminal is and why it needs access (many users dont, unfortunately), its a good idea to keep it locked. Giving Emacs explicit access to the hard drive and folders was a no-brainer, However, that didnt help. I still received the same error message.

After some research on Stackexchange, I learned that the list (“ls”) command in macOS is different than the one in Linux. They both do the same thing and both historically date back to Unix, but theyve developed somewhat differently. the Linux ls program is the GNU ls command, which is the one Emacs “knows” how to use. This version of ls is bundled with other command line tools inside a package called coreutils, which can be installed with Homebrew. That was my next step, but I still encountered the error.

The same place online that suggested installing coreutils also gave instructions to change the path for Bash on macOS, so it can be found. This made sense; after all, if Emacs cant find the ls program, it would give the same error as if its not installed. So that was the next step. Zilch. The error persisted.

I was puzzled until a co-worker looked at this with me and noticed the path instructions are for bash (in
~/.bash_profile
). Bash, as the Mac users among you know, is not the default shell on macOS since macOS Catalina; it is now ZSH. The file to configure ZSH is
~/.zshrc
. That was a mistake that someone like me, whos coming from Linux and used to Bash, would not know to change.

With the path changed in the ZSH configuration file, Emacs was finally able to find the ls program and list the directories. Well, most of them. The Desktop and the Documents folder were giving me permission denied error when I tried to list their contents. This was strange since I already gave Emacs full access to the hard drive. More online research followed. What I found was interesting.

On macOS, Emacs runs inside a Ruby wrapper (this detail is buried on the Emacs wiki). So, while its nice that I gave Emacs access to the hard drive, Ruby, which is (from my understanding) the “messenger” Emacs sends out to use the ls command in Dired, was denied access. The fix was to add Ruby to the access list under Security in macOS settings1.

Only after Ruby had access I was able to see all the local directories I wanted. Its odd just how alienated macOS “feels” Emacs is. I understand the logic of whats going on, but still, the notion that I need to customize so many things to let something as free and good as Emacs is something Id grown to expect from Windows, not macOS. Oh well. Cest la Vie.

This doesnt explain why other directories worked fine without giving Ruby explicit access. For example, I could view my Downloads folder just fine on the Mac. From what I read, I understand this has to do with the integration of iCloud, which the Desktop and the Document folders are a part of. My guess is that Ruby needs access to iCloud, or, that you dont access these directories at all, but some sort of cloud integration that just seems like folders, when in fact they are not. Whatever the case may be, that was the fix. ↩︎

Ten years ago, Bozhidar Batsov wrote a post entitled Why Emacs. It was a short essay on why he used Emacs, what was good about it, and what its shortcomings were. Ten years later, Batsov, like most of us, is a different person doing a different job.

Back then he was a programmer, mostly concerned with writing code but also writing a blog, (think), that he also wrote in Emacs so he could be said to be using Emacs for most of his text editing needs. These days hes moved into management and no longer spends much time coding except for his OSS projects and the majority of his prose is written in Slack and Google Docs.

Still, Batsov continues to love Emacs and be one of the most prominant evangelists for it. Hes just written a retrospective on his post, Why Emacs: Redux. A lot of things havent changed: Emacs (and Vim) are still the premier way of editing text and Emacs extensibility is still unrivaled and the thing that sets it apart.

On the other hand, Emacs has not stood still. It has more packages than ever, it has rudimentary multithreading, a builtin JSON parser, good support for LSP, and, of course, native compilation. Emacs is definitely not standing still.

All of that is true but for me the real virtue of Emacs is power. The power to efficiently edit text, the power to extend it in virtually any direction I want, and the power to make it a Lisp-Machine-like operating environment.

Take a look at both posts. Theyre interesting and a reminder of why we love Emacs so much.

I wrote my CV with org mode, thinking this would make it easier to refresh it by simply adding new refs to my bibliography file, but it's not as smooth as I expected.

I tried org-ref, but I hardly can make it work again any time I need it.
Now I'm trying with basic latex, and I still can't make it work correctly. (I've heard about the new citation system but it's not released yet and I'm really not trying to experiment a lot of things and change my whole
completing-read
backend right now)

I am down to this situation: at the end of my org file I specify the bibliography file, style, and
nocite
everything with a
*
(because I really don't want to manually add every ref, that's the whole point)

\nocite{*} \bibliography{biblio} \bibliographystyle{plain}

This nearly works, as it inserts a bibliography at the end of my CV, but the citations are in the order of the bibtex file, which would not be a problem if zotero did not completely randomize those refs.
Maybe someone here does know how to get zotero to export in a set order, or org/latex to cite in a set order?

Also,
bibliographystyle{…}
seems to be completely ignored as it's always the same citation style no matter what I write between the curly braces. Do I need to use a package even for the basic citation styles?

My
org-latex-pdf-process
(of which I have found countless different versions on the web…) is
'("latexmk -pdflatex='lualatex -shell-escape -interaction nonstopmode' -pdf -f %f")
, maybe it's not the right one? (previously I had one that circulates with 4 entries in the list, it's not getting me better results)

I'm on archlinux with texlive-core, texlive-bin, texlive-latexextra, texlive-bibextra, and bibtool installed. Org is 9.4.6. Emacs is 27.2. Do I miss latex packages maybe?

This seems to be mostly a zotero/bibtex/latex question, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one trying to write my CV with Org so these must be not so rare concerns (although I cannot find good ressources on the net about these!).

Thanks for the help!

edit: I tried using bibtool to sort my .bib file and be done with that part, but bibtool can't even sort by the date field (ISO encoded YYYY-MM-DD) correctly! This is insane.

   submitted by /u/SataMaxx
[link] [comments]
