Just a quickie today. Bill over at ATMakers has a short video on Why He Uses Emacs. Its actually a nice example of using keyboard macros to convert raw data into the required form.

I like it because its a realistic example. Very often when we want to convert a data set to some other format, we have the problem that the source data is not completely regular. Theoretically, this means we cant write a quick and easy macro to do the conversion but, of course, that is not how we work. If there are one or two outliers in the data, we just convert everything according to the canonical data and fix up the outliers by hand afterwards.

Thats exactly what Bill does in his video. Most of the data is converted perfectly but the two outliers are easy to fix by hand and the entire process is much more efficient than converting each datum by hand or writing an app that does the right thing for each entry. Instead of an hour or two of tedious work or programming, Bill converts the first entry while recording his keystrokes and then applies that to all the other entries. The fact that it doesnt work on a couple of irregular entries doesnt matter; they are easily fixed by hand.

The video is only 6 minutes, 15 seconds long so it should be easy to find time for it.

This years Emacs conference (EmacsConf 2021) will take place on
November 27 and 28. I will be among the speakers. My talks
description:

How Emacs made me appreciate software freedom

The theme will be “how Emacs empowered my software freedom”. I will
outline the key moments in my transition to a GNU/Linux operating
system and mark those which eventually contributed towards me becoming
an Emacs user, maintainer of a—dare I say—popular package, and
contributor to upstream Emacs (among others). By alluding to personal
experiences, I will draw generalisable insights and connect them to
what I believe are irreducible qualities of Emacs qua software and
Emacs as a community of like-minded people. The talk will be
theoretical in nature: there wont be any code-related demonstration
nor technical references that only people with a background in
computer science would likely recognise. Personal anecdotes shall be
tangential to the point and considered as ancillary to the thesis of
what Emacs represents from the standpoint of software freedom and user
empowerment. The presentation is intended for a general audience that
is interested in GNU software in general and Emacs in particular. My
formal educational background as a social scientist (i.e. not a
programmer) and later as a philosopher informs my approach to this
topic.

The presentation shall be 40 minutes long. Its text will be in essay
form and shall be supplied as complementary material to the video.
The notation will be in Org mode.

Backstory

I had no intention to participate in the event, even though I was well
aware of it and despite the fact that I had followed the previous two
conferences. My reasoning was that (i) I probably had no technical
insight to share that wasnt already known to the members of—and
likely participants in—such a setting, (ii) I already have my website
with a dedicated section on Emacs where I can publish any article or
video I want, and (iii) EmacsConf provides a platform for people who are
otherwise not disseminating their own stories to reach a wider audience.
Some or all of these assumptions may have been fallacious. They still
represent what I believed at the time.

At around the end of September, a few days before the deadline for the
submission of proposals, someone knowledgeable of the conferences
logistics, whose name shall not be divulged, contacted me and asked me
to deliver a talk. I was eventually persuaded to make an attempt at
taking a 20-minute slot, but it was not feasible to condense my thoughts
to such a short video, especially given the tight deadline (I was
preoccupied with other issues, including the release of modus-themes
version 1.6.0
that was made just in time for the creation of the
emacs-28
branch in
emacs.git). So I replied, perhaps with some relief, that I would not be
available for this years event and would consider trying again the year
after.

To cut the long story short, the 40-minute slot was considered a viable
option and I made a last-ditch effort to submit an abstract before the
deadline. It happened on the 30th of September.

There are lots of talks in this years conference. All seem very
interesting and I am looking forward to watch them. Hopefully mine will
be worth it as well.

Next week is a Q+R! Get your questions ready and send them to info@jointhebibleproject.com. Please keep the audio file to about 20 seconds and let us know your name and where youre from.

This episode continues our series on God. Tim and Jon dive deeper into the portrayal of Jesus as a character in the New Testament. They ask the big question: Just who did Jesus think he was?

In part one (00:00-12:15), Tim and Jon briefly recap the conversation so far. As depicted in the Hebrew Scriptures, God is a “complex unity.” Tim says its a fundamental mistake and a case of cultural imperialism to read the Bible expecting the biblical authors to use language and words the same way that you do. He offers an example: Would you travel to another country and expect them to speak the same way, eat the same things, and have all of the cultural norms you are accustomed to? Of course not. You travel to see other cultures. So when reading the Bible, the reader needs to be trained to think as a Hebrew author would think.

In part two (12:15 - 24:15), Tim breaks down some of Jesus' more inflammatory claims, including that “all the things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son reveals him.”

Tim says that when Jesus says this it's another way of Jesus proclaiming he is the Son of Man, but he doesnt use Daniel 7 Son of Man language. Instead, he uses Father/Son language. Jesus is saying that just because people may not recognize who he is, doesnt change his identity as the Son of Man. Tim says there was a point in Jesus' human development where he became aware of his identity as the Messiah. The only window into this is the short story in Luke where Jesus is twelve years old and wants to stay in the temple because hes aware of his identity.

In part three (24:15- 40:40), Jon asks how ancient Jews thought of the Son of Man coming? Tim says that the Son of Man figure in Daniel 7 inspired a lot of different ideas. Jesus is claiming that he is opening up a way to relate to the God of Israel as “Father.”

Tim outlines Matthew 26. The high priest demands to know if Jesus is the Messiah. Tim makes a key distinction. For the Jews, the title Son of Man is much more blasphemous than the title Son of God. To be a Son of God is a royal title that says youre a descendant of King David. To be the Son of Man means you are claiming divinity, sharing in Gods own identity.

Jesus response to the high priest is a response from Psalm 110 and Daniel 7. He says “from this moment,” meaning that as soon as he is condemned to death, it is actually the beginning of his installment or coronation as the Son of Man, who will now be sitting at the “right hand of the Father.” Jesus is then given a robe and a crown of thorns and is crucified. This is his coronation as King of the universe.

In part four (40:40 -44:35), Tim gives a historical example of “Alexamenos of Rome,” an ancient piece of Roman graffiti depicting Christ being crucified, only in the image he has the head of a donkey. The graffiti is the Romans mocking someone named Alexamenos for worshiping Jesus, saying that its completely absurd.

Tim offers an example of twenty-one Christians in the Middle East who were slaughtered and beheaded for their faith in Jesus. The apostles would have you believe that while they were being brutally murdered, they were the ones in charge, not their captors. How counterintuitive.

In part five (44:35-end), Tim and Jon briefly discuss Christian baptism. Baptisms bookend the book of Matthew. At the beginning, Jesus is baptized, and at the end, he tells his disciples to baptize new believers. Tim says that, unfortunately, baptism has been controversial and divisive in Christian history. Because the apostles didn't seem to be interested in explaining baptism to the degree that it would solve debates about what baptism actually means and symbolizes. Tim says that regardless, all Christians agree that it is an important motif in Christianity. Why? Because you get to identify yourself with the Jesus story, going through the same ritual he did to identify as a child of God.

Thank you to all of our supporters!

Nyxt Dashboard

By John Mercouris

We are excited to introduce the new built-in Nyxt dashboard! (this feature will be available in the next release of Nyxt).

The dashboard in Nyxt can be configured to show any available system information, processes running, disk space available, the weather, etc. If the information is available, the dashboard can display it.

How to use it?

Use the following snippet within your configuration file to enable the built-in dashboard:

(define-configuration browser
((startup-function (make-startup-function :buffer-fn #'dashboard))))

If you wish to specify a different dashboard function (for example, a function of your own making), pass a different function to
make-startup-function
.

In creating a new dashboard function, you'll be able to produce any layout/information you wish- that is how you can completely customize the dashboard.

How to customize it?

The built-in dashboard uses an internal buffer. Therefore, to change its appearance, you can change the
style
of the
internal-buffer
class. Changing this will effect all of your interal buffers (examples include: bookmark listing, buffer listing, message listing, help pages, etc)- resulting in an easily configurable, consistent style.

In doing so you can make Nyxt look exactly how you want!

Thanks for reading :-)

Viewer Question LAZ X (Follow Up)

I was wondering if there is a way to normalize the master audio output in Linux. I love Linux but don’t like playing movies or music because the audio out is not normalized and I have manually adjust the volume levels constantly. In Windows I use K Lite codec pack which has a plugin option to normalize the main audio out, but I can’t seem to find a way to do this in Linux. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, great show, loving it !

Had the same problem with normalizing sound and this is how I solve it, it’s pretty easy, in your distribution find and install LADSPA plugins, then just edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and add this two lines at the end :

load-module module-ladspa-sink sink_name=compressor plugin=sc4_1882 label=sc4 control=1,1.5,401,-10,20,5,12

set-default-sink compressor

Reboot and it’s all good

Possible answer as well

I am annoyed that when I
C-g
out of my expand-region session my cursor does not return to its original location.

In trying to resolve this annoyance I found that expand-region comes with a variable
er/save-mode-excursion
that is described as:

A function to save excursion state while expanding

I set this variable to
(lambda (&rest body) () (save-excursion body))
and I found that this does not suit my needs for the following reasons.

This variable does not seem to effect any
er/mark-
commands outside of
er/expand-region
. For example if I do
er/mark-defun
and then hit
C-g
my cursor position is not returned.

I often use a key-chord bound to
(lambda () (interactive) (execute-kbd-macro (read-kbd-macro "\C-g")))
. When I use this key-chord instead of actually hitting C-g my cursor position is not returned. I do not understand why this is.

Next I tried taking advantage of the
deactivate-mark-hook
to programatically hit
C-u C-SPC
.

(add-hook 'deactivate-mark-hook #'(lambda () (let ((current-prefix-arg 4)) (call-interactively 'set-mark-command))))

This works great for my non expand-region region endeavours but when I try to use any
er/
commands I get unpredictable behavior. I believe the problem is that expand-region resets the mark multiple times and therefore
deactivate-mark-hook
is called multiple times.

In regards to the
er/mark-
functions I tried to wrap them all up in new functions that wrap a
save-excursion
but the behavior is not what I expected. For example if I try this on
er/mark-defun
then the marked region becomes from the current point to the end of the defun instead of marking the entire defun.

My next idea is to make my own
expand-region-minor-mode
where I can probably solve this problem. Before I do this though I want to know if there are already existing solutions.

   submitted by /u/thirtySeven73
[link] [comments]

I'm so close to nailing the first few steps of my note taking system! The final hurdle for me at the moment is getting org-noter-pdftools-create-skeleton to create a much plainer output, and bonus points for it going straight into an org-roam node, but I'd happy for that not to happen.

Currently when I run M-x org-noter-pdftools-create-skeleton I get the following org-file.
