<p>Tips & Tricks:<br />
<strong>DNF History</strong> provides you with a list of all DNF based transactions or commands you used, dates and times of when you used them and packages affected, etc.<br />
The most powerful part of dnf history though is the ability to undo these changes. Utilizing actions like: </p>
<p>Ex: dnf history undo id</p>
<p><strong>sudo !!</strong> which will add sudo to your last command in case you forgot to include sudo<br />

– alias please=”sudo !!”</p>

<a href="http://meldmerge.org/">Meld</a> & <a href="http://www.caffeinated.me.uk/kompare/">Kompare</a><br />
Compare and merge files with a Visual version of the diff command.<br />
Meld is a visual diff and merge tool targeted at developers. Meld helps you compare files, directories, and version controlled projects. It provides two- and three-way comparison of both files and directories, and supports many version control systems including Git, Mercurial, Bazaar and Subversion.</p>

<p class="text">“I think there is writing genius as well – which consists primarily, I think, of the ability to place oneself in the shoes of one’s audience; to assume only what the assume; to anticipate what they anticipate; to explain they need explained; to think what they must be thinking; to feel what they must be feeling.”</p>

<p>In part one (0:00-25:30), the guys discuss the series so far, and Tim dives into the final two perspectives to keep in mind when reading biblical law. The fifth perspective is that the purpose of the covenant laws is fulfilled in Jesus and the Spirit.</p>
<p>The dual role of the laws––to condemn and to point the way to true life––is fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and in the coming of the Spirit to Jesus’ new covenant people. Jesus was the first obedient human and the faithful Israelite who fulfilled the law yet bore the curse of humanity's punishment so that others could have life and the status of covenant righteousness. Tim references Matthew 5:17-20:</p>
<p>“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”</p>
<p>Tim notes that Jesus is the embodiment of the point of the law, the ideal person who doesn’t need the law because they are abiding with Yahweh by nature.</p>
<p>In part two (25:30-35:00), Tim asks who or what is being punished on the cross. Tim references Romans 8:3:</p>
<p>“For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”</p>
<p>Tim notes that Paul doesn’t mean that God hated humanity and punished Jesus instead of punishing humanity. Instead, God loved humanity in its weakness and failure and punished sin and condemned sin through Jesus dying on the cross.</p>
<p>Tim notes that Paul thinks of sin as a cosmic tyrant. It's not just an individual problem, but a problem of essential mode existence for the world. The law, or divine command, was supposed to be an opportunity for humans to realize their true calling of acting in God’s image voluntarily. Instead, we chose and choose to disobey and now live “enslaved” to our decision(s).</p>
<p>In part three (35:00-end), Tim discusses the last perspective: The laws are a source of wisdom for all generations.</p>
<p>The Torah is viewed as a source of wisdom within the Hebrew Bible</p>
<p>The tree of knowing good and evil is the pathway to the tree of life. In Proverbs, learning wisdom is the pathway to the tree of life. Tim uses the following proverbs to illustrate his point.<br />
Proverbs 1:7:<br />
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowing;<br />
Fools despise wisdom and instruction."</p>
<p>Proverbs 3:13, 18:<br />
"How blessed is the man who finds wisdom<br />
And the man who gains understanding.<br />
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,<br />
And happy are all who hold her fast."</p>
<p>Proverbs 15:3-4:<br />
"The eyes of the Lord are in every place,<br />
Watching the evil and the good.<br />
A soothing tongue is a tree of life,<br />
But perversion in it crushes the spirit.<br />
Tim notes that Wisdom is the way to fulfill the Shema."</p>
<p>Proverbs 6:20-23:<br />
"My son, keep the commandment of your father<br />
And do not forsake the instruction of your mother;<br />
Bind them continually on your heart;<br />
Tie them around your neck.<br />
When you walk about, they will guide you;<br />
When you sleep, they will watch over you;<br />
And when you awake, they will talk to you."</p>
<p>Time compares the preceding passage with Deuteronomy 6:4-8:<br />
“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!<br />
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.<br />
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.<br />
You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.<br />
You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.<br />
You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."</p>
<p>Tim notes that these two passages mirror each other, as they teach that acting wisely fulfills the law.</p>
<p>Tim then discusses the apostle Paul to show how he continued to use the laws as wisdom literature.<br />
1 Corinthians 9:9-12:<br />
"For it is written in the Law of Moses, 'You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing.' God is not concerned about oxen, is He? Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, for our sake it was written, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops. If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things so that we will cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ."</p>
<p>Tim quotes Richard B. Hays to understand Paul's continuation of Jewish law.</p>
<p>“This is often cited as an example of arbitrary prooftexting on Paul’s part, but closer observation demonstrates a more complex hermeneutical strategy at play here. First of all, Paul is operating with an explicitly stated hermeneutical principle that God is really concerned about human beings, not oxen, and that the text should be read accordingly (vv. 9–10). Second, a careful look at the context of Deuteronomy 25:4 lends some credence to Paul’s claim about this particular text. The surrounding laws in Deuteronomy 24 and 25 (especially Deut. 24:6–7, 10–22; 25:1–3) almost all serve to promote dignity and justice for human beings; the one verse about the threshing ox sits oddly in this context. It is not surprising that Paul would have read this verse also as suggesting something about justice in human economic affairs.” -- Richard B. Hays, First Corinthians, Interpretation, a Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching (Louisville, KY: John Knox Press, 1997), 151.</p>
<p>So to summarize our series on reading biblical law:</p>
<p>Read each law (1) within its immediate literary context, and (2) within the larger narrative strategy of Torah and Prophets.</p>
<p>Read the laws in their ancient cultural context in conversation with their law codes.</p>
<p>Study related laws as expressions of a larger symbolic worldview.</p>
<p>Discern the “wisdom principle” underneath the laws that can be applied in other contexts.</p>
<p>Refract every law through Jesus’ summary of God’s will: love God and love people.</p>

<p>Those of you who have followed this blog for a while will know that I’ve
collected a few sewing machines over the years. I have a modern Janome DKS100
and a Brother overlocker which I use for most of my sewing, and two vintage
Singer machines (<a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/sewing-1911-style/">hand-cranked</a> and <a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/singer-201k/">treadle operated</a>) that I use when I just need
a beautiful straight stitch and I want to enjoy the serenity of non-motorised
machines. Actually, I have another tiny <a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/old-and-new-but-both-classics/">Singer 99</a> which was the first I bought,
but I don’t often use that one these days. When I learned more about the unique
features of different brands, I really wanted to try a <a href="https://www.pfaff.com">Pfaff machine</a>. Sewing
enthusiasts tend to have their favourite brands, but Pfaff (and Bernina) fans
tend to be very loyal to their chosen machine maker. However, when I bought my
Janome, the problem with that plan was that both were <em>really</em> expensive to buy
new. I think I made the right choice with my Janome at the time. It is a very
capable and well-made machine for the price, and I have thoroughly enjoyed making

a wardrobe of clothes on it. However, I’ve kept an eye on eBay from time to time
to see if any used Pfaff machines came up at reasonable prices, and about a week ago,
I spotted one. Reader, I bought it.</p>
<p>It’s a <a href="https://www.pfaff.com/en-US/Machines/performance-5-2">Pfaff Performance 5.2</a>, and it’s an absolute beauty. Pfaff make some
machines which are oriented more towards quilters, some which have machine
embroidery features, and some which are all-rounders and great for garment
sewing. This model is one of the latter kind. The thing which makes Pfaff
machines unique is the Integrated Dual Feed (IDT) system, which they have had on
almost all their machines for more than 45 years. Most sewing machines feed
fabric under the moving needle from the bottom, using toothed plates called
‘feed dogs’ which rise up and forward in time with the needle to move the fabric
forward and make the next stitch. This works well enough, but since
you are almost always joining two pieces of fabric when sewing, it means that
the bottom piece of fabric can shift relative to the top piece as only the
bottom is in contact with the feed dogs. If you don’t hang on to the fabric
(with your hands, or with careful pinning or basting), the top layer of a seam
ends up being longer than the bottom, even if the fabric length of both pieces
is the same.</p>
<p>You can (and should) counteract this tendency for the pieces to shift with
careful handling, or you can use what’s called a ‘walking foot’. I’ve got one
and use it sometimes on my Janome. It’s a rather large attachment which grips
the fabric from the top while the feed dogs move it from the bottom, and it
helps to keep things from shifting. It’s quite a wide and generic presser foot
though, and doesn’t help when you need to insert a zip or do something else
which requires a special foot. The IDT is built-in, and can be engaged to sew
with most of the feet that you can get for the machine. It works beautifully.
You barely need to hold the fabric, as it feeds evenly and precisely. The stitch
quality is lovely too. It’s one of those things which is hard to quantify, but
sewing on the Pfaff feels smooth and almost effortless. There are a lot of nice
features which make it less of a stop-start activity, and help to keep you in
the flow. You can set it so that the needle stops in the down position when you
stop sewing. Lots of machines (including my Janome) let you do that, and it’s
very helpful to be able to pivot the fabric without moving the needle position.
However, the Pfaff also automatically raises the presser foot slightly to hover
when you stop, so that you don’t have to raise and lower the presser foot
manually when you want to pivot. In fact, when you press the foot pedal, the
presser foot lowers before the machine starts sewing, and when you stop, the
foot hovers. Once you’ve got used to this, it makes for a lovely, flowing way of
sewing, and you can concentrate more on manipulating the fabric and keeping an
eye on the accuracy of your stitching.</p>
<p>I’ve only had time to make a couple of face masks as a test this weekend, but
that went very smoothly. I’ve got some denim to make another pair of Ginger
jeans to replace <a href="https://www.rousette.org.uk/archives/ginger-jeans-2/">this pair</a> which have now worn through on the legs because (as
predicted) I wore them to death. I’m hoping to start those next weekend. I’m
looking forward to all that top-stitching which I think will work out well on
the Pfaff with the IDT. It also has a bit more fabric piercing power, which is
always welcome when you are sewing seams in denim through multiple layers.</p>
<p>So, I seem to have become a sewing machine collector. I did think hard about my
purchase, but I’m really glad I took the plunge as it was a real bargain. We
don’t really have the space for six (yikes!) machines in the house though, so my
plan is to sell the Janome and the Singer 99 so that someone else can enjoy
them. I do like using the other two vintage Singers though. There’s something
about the contrast between a very hi-tech sewing machine (which does a lot for
you) and a very low-tech but beautifully built machine (which does very little
for you) that I enjoy. They both challenge my brain and hands in different ways,
and switching between the two is refreshing.</p>
