Hi,

I'm currently writing up my PhD thesis using org-mode, and it is a joy in comparison to my past experiences writing raw LaTeX.

I'm simultaneously attempting to write up some of the thesis chapters in paper form for publication, and have been creating the papers by selectively #+INCLUDE -ing the thesis chapter .org files. I very much dislike the idea of maintaining the same text in multiple files (fix a typo or re-word something in one, will I remember to propagate those changes throughout?), however the text required for the papers needs to be somewhat more concise than what appears in the thesis. So far I have handled this by having org files containing the core text for a section, which appears in both the thesis and the paper, and another org file that expands on the core and appears in the thesis only.

This approach works well enough, but falls down when I want to interleave concise text and extended text. I could use the line number option for the include command to achieve this, however the text is changing too often for this to be practical. The natural conclusion seems to be to break things down even further, and to have separate org files per paragraph of text, and to construct larger documents out of these.

Does anyone here have any experience of something like this (maybe there are packages which could help?), or perhaps better ideas (i.e. am I being a lunatic)?

Thanks!

   submitted by /u/ForsakenMachinery
[link] [comments]

We've been busy with the holidays and took a short break. We're back with a new episode to start 2020. In this edition, we cover what we've done these past few weeks. Nate tells us more about his holiday lighting project and Eric talks about EndeavourOS, Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix and that leads us into a discussion on how Linux distributions differentiate themselves.

We received some listener feedback from Anthony Lavado of the Jellyfin project which leads to a discussion on home media servers like Jellyfin, Plex and Emby.

Jason Evangelho's account of his 12 Months of Discovery on Linux for Everyone over the past two episodes prompted us to look back at our 2019 experience to see what discoveries of our own we've made.

Destination Linux covered the Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix releases and pondered the merit of an Ubuntu Cinnamon flavor. There was a lot of talk about Linux Mint already filling that space but I disagree.

This Week in Linux covered the release of Feren OS which was recently made available. It's a fascinating example of what someone can achieve in the open source world. We discuss the merits of Feren OS and lovingly poke a bit of fun at its creator.

Lastly, our friend Zeb undertook a monumental 24 live stream on his Zebedee Gaming YouTube channel. He was raising money for DLN's first charity collaboration with FreeGeek. The total came out to an impressive $1,500. Congratulations to Zeb and FreeGeek. Certainly a great way to end the year!

That's all for this week. Be sure to stop by DLN's Discourse, Telegram, Mumble and Discord servers to continue the discussion. More information about this show and other Destination Linux Network shows and creators is available at destinationlinux.network.

Until next time, see yas!

Links:

Jellyfin

EndeavourOS

Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix

Feren OS

FreeGeek

Eric Adams

Nathan Wolf (CubicleNate)

Destination Linux Network
