<p>Eli Zaretskii writes that he’s <a href="https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2021-09/msg02290.html">cut the release branch for Emacs 28.1</a> in preparation for the upcoming pretest. He asks that everyone tracking Emacs development switch to the new branch so that it can get as much testing as possible.</p>
<p>Eli is anticipating that the first pretest will be released in a few weeks. If you’re like me, you want it <i>right now</i> but the reality is, as I’ve said before, that Eli and the other developers are working hard to give us the best possible release and in the end we’ll be glad we waited. In the mean time, you can help by compiling and using the release branch to help with the bug squashing.</p>

<p>This week we talk about the new release of Ubuntu 17.04, take a deep dive into the “right to repair” bill that is sweeping 11 states & the newest player in the social media space, Mastodon.</p>
<h3><strong>-- The Cliff Notes --</strong></h3>
<h4><a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/ubuntu-17-04-the-bittersweet-linux-release/" rel="nofollow">Ubuntu 17.04: The bittersweet Linux release</a></h4>
<blockquote>
<p>The company dropped its smartphone and tablet plans. This, in turn, ended to its plans to make Unity its universal default interface. Instead, Gnome will become Ubuntu's once and future desktop. Days later, long-time CEO Jane Silber resigned in favor of the company's founder Mark Shuttleworth.</p>
</blockquote>

<h4><a href="https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/there-are-now-11-states-considering-bills-to-protect-your-right-to-repair-electronics" rel="nofollow">11 States Considereing Right To Repair</a></h4>
<blockquote>
<p>The bills would require manufacturers to sell replacement parts to consumers and independent repair companies and would also require them to open source diagnostic manuals. It would also give independent repair professionals the ability to bypass software locks that prevent repairs, allowing them to return a gadget back to its factory settings.</p>
<p>Right to repair advocates are looking at this movement as a perhaps decade-long process that will require a grassroots movement of consumers to push back against the long-entrenched repair monopolies of companies like Apple, John Deere, and video game console manufacturers.</p>

<p>I am currently running Debian Unstable (aka “Debian Sid”) on three
machines. I think it is an excellent choice for anyone looking to use
Debian while still deploying a rolling release Operating System. As my
priorities are changing, I want to transition to the stable branch.
With Debian Buster expected some time in mid-2019, here is my plan for
enacting such change.</p>
<h2>A bit of context first</h2>
<p>I was an Arch Linux user prior to migrating to Debian some ~16 months
ago. Debian’s unstable branch was the natural choice for making the
switch as seamless as possible. I did not want to disrupt my setup. It
was dependent on some of the features that were available in the newer
package versions provided by Arch.</p>
<p>So here I am about 1.5 years later. Fully satisfied with the decision I
made. Debian Sid has been excellent thus far.</p>
<p>That granted, I find the much-vaunted advantages of a rolling release
distribution to be context-dependent. It matters what software you rely
on and whether any new features are integral to your workflow.</p>
<p>Put simply, if you want to run a KDE Plasma or a GNOME desktop with all
the new niceties, then rolling release or something closer to the
bleeding edge is the way to go. If, however, you do not care about
newer technologies like Wayland, and are running a custom working
environment such as my BSPWM (see <a href="https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/dotfiles">my
dotfiles</a>), then the
maintenance overhead of a rolling distro outweighs the potential
benefits of having the latest version of everything.</p>
<p>Most tools I rely on are CLI programs. These do not change much. For
example, I use <code>neomutt</code> as my mail client. All the features I need are
already available. If <code>neomutt</code> were to retain its feature set forever,
I would still be happy with it. Same with <code>newsboat</code>, <code>taskwarrior</code>
(executable is <code>task</code>), <code>tmux</code>… And the list goes on.</p>
<h2>The plan for switching to Debian Buster</h2>
<p class="critical">This is <strong>highly experimental.</strong> I am <strong>not an expert in Debian</strong>
system administration. <strong>I do not recommend you try this.</strong> Especially
not on mission critical systems.</p>
<p>Debian Buster (aka Debian 10) is expected a bit less than a year from
now. This is the right moment to prepare for the transition from
Unstable to the next Stable. It gives my systems enough time to
gradually settle in the state of the current Debian Testing branch and
keep track of it while it enters the feature freeze.</p>
<p>The plan hinges on APT and involves some basic pinning preferences. I
want to run a <em>mixed distribution</em> that includes sources from both
<code>testing</code> and <code>unstable</code>.</p>
<p>These are my apt sources:</p>
<pre><code># Security updates (stable)
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stable/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security stable/updates main contrib non-free
# Debian Testing
deb http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
# Debian Unstable
deb http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
</code></pre>
<p>And here are the corresponding preferences:</p>
<pre><code>Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 500
Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 200
</code></pre>
<p>These instruct <code>apt</code> to keep track of packages from the <code>testing</code> branch
and only look at <code>unstable</code> when requested packages are not available
there. Given enough time, it will make my Debian Unstable systems
indistinguishable from Debian Testing.</p>
<p>The inclusion of the <code>debian-security</code> sources is for those cases where
a package has migrated directly from <code>unstable</code> to <code>stable</code>. Examples
that come to mind are the latest <code>firefox-esr</code> and <code>thunderbird</code>.</p>
<p>When the feature freeze starts, I will effectively be running Debian
Testing, which is the pre-release of the next stable distribution.</p>
<p>Then the idea is to follow the announcements about when Debian 10 will
become available. A few days prior to its official release, I will edit
my <code>apt</code> sources again to look like this:</p>
<pre><code>deb http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stable/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security stable/updates main contrib non-free
# stable-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ stable-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ stable-updates main contrib non-free
</code></pre>
<p>Notice that I added a few more entries, which I adapted from the default
options that are provided on a clean Debian 9 install. <em>These are
subject to change.</em></p>
<p>Once I have the new sources in place, I will remove the aforementioned
pinning rules. I only want to track <code>stable</code>.</p>
<h2>Learning by doing</h2>
<p>Debian does not officially support any graceful move from Unstable to
Stable. <em>This is highly experimental.</em> I have backups in place in case
something goes awry.</p>
<p>The truth is I have had no issues whatsoever with Debian Sid. But that
is partly due to my diligence with system administration. It takes time
and dedication; resources that could be managed more efficiently. Given
that my main tools do not need to be on the bleeding edge, such
commitment offers a marginal benefit at best.</p>
<p>The afore-described venture would presumably fail miserably if I were
running major software groups that update frequently, such as GNOME or
KDE. All I now have on my systems apart from the core packages is BSPWM
and related extras, my CLI tools, Firefox and Thunderbird, and Xfce as a
backup Desktop Environment (before I had GNOME and MATE).</p>
<p>I expect the transition to the next Debian Stable to be smooth because I
am not trying to rush things and downgrade packages in bulk. What is
basically happening is a self imposed package freeze in anticipation of
the official introduction of Debian 10. Some manual downgrades may
still be required, but these should be limited in scope or at least
easier to figure out.</p>

<!-- SC_OFF --><div class="md"><p>Hi,</p> <p>I just recently discovered the great <strong>foot</strong> terminal emulator [1]. It can render also bitmap fonts and does it very well. Because I stare at the terminal like 80% of the time I very much appreciate sharp fonts. E.g. JetBrains Mono is very nice but right now I'm using Terminus bitmap font and it's (of course as a bitmap font) even sharper. But...</p> <p>What are some other good bitmap fonts for terminals? With bigger sizes, I mean equivalent of, say, "Font size 10-12" in Gnome. I've found many of them but a vast majority is super tiny.</p> <p>[1] <a href="https://codeberg.org/dnkl/foot">https://codeberg.org/dnkl/foot</a></p> </div><!-- SC_ON --> submitted by <a href="https://www.reddit.com/user/Original_Two9716"> /u/Original_Two9716 </a> <br/> <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/pp70ur/foot_terminal_good_bitmap_font/">[link]</a></span> <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/pp70ur/foot_terminal_good_bitmap_font/">[comments]</a></span>

<p>I just published version <code>0.9.0</code> of the Modus themes. These are my
highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They conform with the WCAG AAA
standard for colour contrast accessibility (a minimum contrast ratio of
7:1 between the foreground and background values). You can find the
packages on GNU ELPA, MELPA, MELPA stable:</p>

<h2>Modus Operandi and Modus Vivendi version 0.9.0</h2>
<p>By Protesilaos Stavrou <a href="mailto:info@protesilaos.com">info@protesilaos.com</a> on 2020-06-03</p>
<p>This entry records the changes since version 0.8.0 (2020-04-28). The
present release contains about 50 commits, covering a month of active
development.</p>
<p>All changes are aligned with the primary objective of this project,
which is conformance with the WCAG AAA accessibility standard for colour
contrast. This translates to a minimum contrast ratio of 7:1 between a
given combination of foreground and background colours. The highest
standard of its kind.</p>
<p>All customisation options that are booleans are off (<code>nil</code>) by default.
The project’s policy is to offer such features on an “opt-in” basis,
while always respecting the principle of least surprise.</p>
<p>Refer to the README for further information on the exact names of
symbols and the like.</p>
<h2>New customisation options</h2>
<ul>
<li>
<p>It is now possible to make the faces of Icomplete, Ido, and a few
other related tools such as <code>orderless</code>, use coloured backgrounds to
style their feedback. This is the aesthetic already in effect for
Ivy, Helm, and Selectrum. The default is more subtle, in that it uses
just an accented foreground value without any added background.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Advanced users can now override both the exact values of colour
variables, as well as the mapping of properties/variables to faces.
In practice this means that it is possible to completely change parts
of the theme (or the entirety of it for that matter). It also means
that users can simply access the theme’s palette for the sake of
correctly passing the appropriate value to some bespoke face of
theirs.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>An extra increment for scaled headings is now available. This should
hold the highest value on the scale. Such variables only take effect
when the user opts for the “scaled headings” option.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<h2>Overview of changes</h2>
<ul>
<li>
<p>A set of internal reforms were carried through in order to allow the
colour palette to be accessed from user configuration files. This
required a lot of debugging work to make sure the themes compile
properly and performance is not affected.</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>The original idea for this redesign was suggested by Len Trigg in
issue 39: https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/39.
Len also provided a real-world implementation of this new option,
which is included in the project’s README.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>André Alexandre Gomes helped figure out the problems caused by the
initial design of this feature. In particular, André identified a
performance penalty as well as errors pertaining to byte
compilation. Everything was eventually resolved. For more see
issue 44: https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/44.</p>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>
<p>Several org-mode faces were reviewed in order to cope well with mixed
font settings. This is about use-cases where the main typeface is
proportionately-spaced, either by default or by some minor mode like
the built-in <code>variable-pitch-mode</code>. The intent of configuring those
faces is to make them always inherit a fixed-pitch (monospace) font
family, in the interest of preserving the alignment of elements. The
idea, suggested code, as well as user feedback were offered by Ben in
issue 40: https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/40.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Mixed font settings may have some side-effects depending on user
configurations. This is unavoidable as we cannot control how users
define their fonts. Mark Barton reported one such case, while he was
able to fix it by making use of the suggested typeface definitions.
See issue 42: https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/42.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>The faces for the <code>tab-bar-mode</code> and <code>tab-line-mode</code> that ship with
Emacs 27 were written anew. Same for those of <code>centaur-tabs</code>. The
ideas for the redesign as well as the overall aesthetic are Ben’s, per
issue 41: https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/41.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>An edge case with Helm’s interpretation of colour values for its
ripgrep interface was reported by Manuel Uberti in issue 49:
https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/49. It
essentially had to do with the syntax for the regexp engine as read by
the underlying <code>rg</code> executable. Collaboration on that front
eventually led to fixes in Helm itself, committed by its maintainer.
Note that the README for the Modus themes already contains information
on how Helm applies a face to the matches of grep or grep-like
commands. Issue 49 confirmed what was already known in that regard
(i.e. that the “–color=never” command-line option is required to use
the Helm face, else a colour value from the ANSI colour vector is
used—both are supported by the themes).</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>The faces for Flycheck, Flymake, and Flyspell that would apply an
underline effect were completely rewritten to account for relevant
differences between GUI and TUI Emacs.</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>For GUI Emacs, all affected faces will now just use a colour-coded
wavy underline. Empowered by the introduction of dedicated
linter-related colours in prior commits (for version 0.8.0), we no
longer have to change the foreground value of the offending text in
addition to applying the underline effect. Whereas before the text
would also get repainted, which was too intrusive in most
circumstances.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>If support for wavy underlines is not available, we assume the
presence of a TUI, which generally is relatively more limited in its
ability to reproduce colours with precision (meaning that the
dedicated linter colour could be distorted, potentially producing
inaccessible combinations). So for those cases we apply a straight
underline combined with a colour-coded foreground for the affected
text. This makes it more intense compared to the GUI equivalent,
but is the necessary course of action to overcome the constraints
imposed by the underlying terminal.</p>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>
<p>The palette of Modus Operandi underwent lots of subtle changes to make
the background value of hl-line-mode more visible while retaining the
overall style and character of the theme. In principle, you should
not be able to tell the difference, unless presented with a careful
side-by-side comparison. This is the comprehensive report, including
a reproducible org-mode document with all the relevant contrast ratios:

<p>In this screen cast I offer a comprehensive overview of the powers of
keyboard macros in GNU Emacs. Macros are recorded sequences of key
chords that can be executed again to repeat the action. The idea is
to define complex motions that can then be re-run in the blink of an
eye.</p>
<p>Advanced features of keyboard macros in Emacs include the ability to
(i) maintain a ring of stored macros and to cycle through its
contents, (ii) assign a unique name to a macro and call it the way you
would call any other function using <code>M-x</code>, and (iii) output a macros’
definition as proper lisp code that can then be stored in a file for
use in future session.</p>
<p>Keyboard macros can be a very powerful tool in the hands of a skilled
writer or programmer.</p>

<!-- SC_OFF --><div class="md"><p>I've been using Emacs for quite some time, but recently I wanted to try a more "modern" app just to see how it goes. I went with Notion, and what an great app. I got some ideas and thoughts like "that would be cool to have in Emacs". So how is your note taking workflow and what do you do to make Emacs feel less 80s ( UI packages and general functionalities)?</p> </div><!-- SC_ON --> submitted by <a href="https://www.reddit.com/user/Hastrack"> /u/Hastrack </a> <br/> <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/q8f9sb/making_emacs_feels_less_80s/">[link]</a></span> <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/q8f9sb/making_emacs_feels_less_80s/">[comments]</a></span>
