What does the Bible really say about the origins of the universe? The biblical authors had a completely different framework for this question than we do. When we expect the Bible to settle our debates, we close ourselves off from understanding the text as they intended it. In this episode, join Tim and Jon as they kick off a new series on Genesis 1-3, beginning with a look at ancient cosmologies.

View full show notes from this episode →

Timestamps

Part one (0:00-8:15)

Part two (8:15-12:30)

Part three (12:30-20:00)

Part four (20:00-27:00)

Part five (27:00-end)

Referenced Resources

Interested in more?
Mickey Petersen has another great post up at Mastering Emacs. In the post, Mickey notes that Emacs 29 is going to have first class support for emoji. I dont use emoji much so I dont care but Mickeys post was still very interesting to me because he shows how to implement essentially the same functionality using an input method.

Input methods are a way of temporarily switching to a specialized keyboard so that you can enter special symbols or diacritical marks. I use the TeX input method all the time when Im writing blog posts and find it an easy and convenient way of dealing with LaTeX symbols in a non-TeX buffer. Until I read Mickeys post, I didnt know much about input methods other than that the TeX method allowed me to enter LaTeX commands.

It turns out that its easy to implement an input method as Mickey shows by using it to make a simple emoji mode. He implements only four emoji but its easy to add as many as you like. The TL;DR is that you use
quail-define-package
to define the mode and
quail-define-rules
to establish the mappings between the key sequences and the symbols you want to insert.

The method is more powerful than Ive described as you can see by reading the documentation but its simple in the simple case and worth knowing about in case you have need of such a facility.

In this screen cast, I offer an introduction to GNU Stow. Its manpage
describes it as a “software package installation manager”.

I personally use
stow
to exercise centralised control over sets of
custom configuration files. It makes things considerably easier,
especially when working with complex directory structures, such as
those found in my dotfiles.

In the video I also make reference to my latest book, “Prots Dots
For Debian” (PDFD) which contains a
section on how to use GNU Stow for the purposes of reproducing my
custom desktop session.

This is our third Q+R in our God series. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions! Tim and Jon discussed four of the questions we received. Here are the questions and timestamps:

Q1: (1:05)
Bryce from Chicago
I'm currently studying in Chicago at the Moody Bible Institute. A bunch of guys from my floor were watching the Season 5 premiere, and we had a specific question for the God series: How does God's interaction with the world, that is, wanting to co-rule with celestial and terrestrial creatures, relate to God's transcendence and sovereignty? And to all of you at The Bible Project, your work is inspiring and helpful every daythanks so much!

Q2: (11:42)
Linda from Portland, Oregon
I've heard a Tim Keller podcast sermon on Abraham's conversion with the three visitors he entertains in his tent before they go down to bring judgement on Sodom and Gomorrah as being an intercession like the one between Moses and God. Can you comment on how this earlier Abraham story contributes to the intercession paradigm you talk about from the example of Moses?

Q3: (25:15)
Brian from Cleveland
In God E7, you mentioned Christopher Wright's commentary and explanation of Moses' intercession and the purpose of the narrative. Moses is counting God's consistency despite God's threat. When God relents or changes His mind, He's actually showing Himself to be consistent. My question is this: Is something similar happening in Genesis 22 when Abraham is asked to sacrifice Isaac? There's no explicit mention of Abraham praying or interceding, but his faith in God's consistency is evident. Thanks!

Q4: (43:45)
Maggie from Wisconsin
Tim said that people that are interested in the spiritual realm today usually disconnect it from the political power structures, even though the biblical authors saw the two as intertwined/mirrors. However, it seems that the majority of the demons that Jesus was casting out within the New Testament were in individuals that were not politically powerful people.

Tips & Tricks:
Our tip and trick comes from Brian. He writes in with this suggestion:
> Over the years I have amassed quite the collection of bash scripts. I’ve written most of them myself. Although none of them are very complex (most are only a line or two) using them saves me a great deal of time. For many years I kept them in ~/Documents/Scripts and had to enter the full path to run them. A while back I decided to research the best place to store them where Linux would automatically find them when I simply run the script by name. I now store them in /usr/local/bin and sync that folder across all of my (personal) machines using SyncThing.
>
> It’s not a big deal. I know it won’t be a major game-changer for most people. However, when I made that discovery and followed through, it improved my daily workflow significantly. So, I thought it would be nice to share this with the community.
>
> Please keep up the good work as I love the show.
> Brian
> from London, Ontario (Canada)
> PS: I previously worked in broadcast radio & have dabbled in podcasting. I now have a home studio as I do some voice-over work on the side… If you ever need a guest-host, let me know!
