The ubiquitous cron job of the UN*X world is named after Chronos, the Greek word for time or the personification of time in the Greek mythology. It comes in handy whenever a repetitive task needs to be scheduled.

Nyxt sets itself apart from other browsers by elevating your control to that of the highest gods! Meet the new watch mode – a mode that lets you reload a buffer at regular time intervals.

Plenty of use cases come to mind – daily updating your favourite news or weather provider, monitoring the metrics of jobs or processes through a web interface, or convincing your peers that you're a medium and that your browser reads your mind.

How to Use It?

Simply hover to the desired buffer and enable watch-mode. You'll be prompted to choose the units of time and specify them. Notice that you can select as many units of time as you desire. If, for obscure reasons, you need to update a given buffer every 2 seconds, 12 minutes, 5 hours and 1 day, please help yourself! At the last prompt confirm by hitting the Return key. You can interrupt the scheduling by disabling watch-mode in its respective buffer.

You start by selecting which intervals of time you are interested in updating on:

Then, you select the amount of time for each unit:

Now, your buffer will reload as necessary!

Emergent Properties

Nyxt provides atomic units of functionality to its users. In turn, new emergent patterns come to light when they're composed together. Concretely, can you feel the joy of coupling auto-mode and watch-mode? Recall that watch-mode defines its scheduling for each buffer. Meaning that when auto-mode is activated, you can have that same behaviour replicated in future Nyxt sessions. Please refer to previous article on auto-mode if you missed it.

Watch-mode is yet another small step towards being able to quickly define workflows that adapt to your needs.

Thanks for reading :-)

Earlier today I wanted to convert a bunch of Org meta data keywords to
lower case notation, with the help of
isearch-forward-regexp
and

query-replace-regexp
. This included everything from special comments,
like
#+TITLE:
to property drawers in the form of
:PROPERTIES:
.
There were 340 such cases in my file and I was reluctant to do so
manually. Thankfully, Emacs makes such a task fairly simple once you
get past the essentials, because it lets you evaluate arbitrary Elisp
forms for the replacement text. This includes the possibility of
running some function on a matched regexp group. In this case that
function was
(downcase OBJECT)
.

First I needed a regular expression that would capture all targets.

isearch-forward-regexp
and its
query-replace-regexp
counterpart
expect a single backslash for the escape character, so I ended up with
this pattern:

^\(#\|:\)[^ ].*?:

If I were to test this in the buffer, I could use
M-x re-builder
,
which however requires double backslashes (same for when you write Elisp
code):

^\\(#\\|:\\)[^ ].*?:

Once I was sure of the regular expression I had to use, I went to the
top of the buffer and invoked
isearch-forward-regexp
(bound to

C-M-s
by default).

Entered the pattern
^\(#\|:\)[^ ].*?:
, got live feedback of the
matching items, and switched to
query-replace
with
C-%

(
isearch-query-replace
). When the Isearch is regexp-aware so is the
corresponding
query-replace
.

For the replacement text I instructed the command to evaluate the

downcase
function. This is done by escaping the comma operator
(
,
) and then supplying the function with a regexp group. Because I
wished to match everything, the group should be
\0
. Which means
that the replacement should be expressed thus:
\,(downcase \0)
.

Try this with any string in a buffer, say,
Hello
:

M-x query-replace-regexp

Hello

\,(upcase \0)

Confirm the operation and you should get
HELLO
. This works with
multiple groups and can read a series of Elisp forms. An example with

Hello world
:

M-x query-replace-regexp

\(Hello\) \(world\)

\,(downcase \1) \,(capitalize \2)

Which should give you
hello World
.

The elegant minimalism of the
query-replace
interface grants you the
power to either replace each match one at a time or hit the exclamation
mark (
!
) to answer “yes to all”. This is what I did to downcase all
340 matches. Voila! All of my Org file’s meta data were converted to
lower case in one go.

Finally, I discovered
query-replace-regexp-eval
which saves you from
adding the escaped comma operator for the replacement’s Elisp form.
However its doc string reads thus:

Interactive use of this function is deprecated in favor of the
‘\,’ feature of ‘query-replace-regexp’. For non-interactive use, a loop
using ‘search-forward-regexp’ and ‘replace-match’ is preferred.

I recently got a new- well, not newer, but better laptop from my cousin. I didn't want to deal with redownloading all of my data on it and stuff, so I just swapped my hard drive from my old laptop to my new one. Along with learning that Windows likes to de activate whenever someone uses it on a different machine (stupid but not the issue I'm here for) I learned that grub just doesn't want to... exist. The only bootloader I can get to load is the Windows 7 EFI boot manager. Now, I have Arch and Ubuntu installed alongside Windows, so that's kind of an issue. I can get to Ubuntu from my boot menu, but not Arch. I try reinstalling GRUB from Ubuntu, but even though it reports no error, my laptop still boots into the EFI boot manager. My current solution is to use a usb stick or CD with grub on it, and just use that to boot, but that's a little bit of a hassle when I take my laptop around places, I don't want to always have to bring a usb stick or CD around with it. What should I do to get GRUB working? (I heard it has issues on older EFI firmware and this laptop is from 2012 or 13, so that could be an issue.)

Also as a side and off topic note, does anyone know how I could activate Windows 7 today? I tried some activation scripts but that didn't work and Microsoft's official website just wants me to upgrade to Windows 10 and that's just not happening.

   submitted by /u/masterkitty2006
[link] [comments]

I have changed my default terminal emulator from Simple Terminal (ST) to
MATE Terminal (MT). In the process, I modified 46 files, making 214
additions and 7843 deletions. I also learned how to properly use

dconf
to control
mate-terminal
programmatically.

The commit message from the
merge
into
master
provides a detailed explanation (please ignore any typo or
odd comma). The gist of it is that the new choice is better for
portability and maintainability, while also offering a few minor
usability benefits.

This is a major review of my dotfiles. It intends to replace my
default choice of terminal emulator.

Below is an excerpt of the commit message that signalled the start of
this process.

Context: after extensive testing, I have decided to change my default
choice of terminal emulator to MT. The previous default was my custom
build of the Simple Terminal (ST), by the Suckless community. Here is
the reasoning, in outline form:

MT is already installed on my system, because MATE is my fallback
option for a fully fledged desktop environment.

ST has build dependencies, meaning that a user of my dotfiles must
first follow the instructions in the README that is bundled with
ST’s source code. Without these dependencies, ST will fail to build
when performing an environment theme update (using either my

tempusmenu
or
own_script_update_environment_theme
).

ST needs to be recompiled for a theme change to occur. MT updates
faster (courtesy of
own_script_mate_terminal_setup
) and is less
taxing on system resources in this specific instance (my laptop’s
fan is not activated).

ST has major problems drawing box characters without extensive
patching. Only at specific point sizes, does the selected font draw
continuous lines. Whereas MT has no such issues.

ST cannot draw emoji characters, while it requires an extra package
for symbolic fonts (see its README) in order not to segfault when
trying to display them. MT supports emoji. Now, it may seem
superfluous to have such a feature, but it is important once you
consider that people add emoji in emails or blog posts that can
ultimately be read through the terminal (such as via
neomutt
and

newsboat
respectively). While the font problems are not major,
they do add up (terminals are all about text, after all).

From an aesthetic perspective, ST is not very well suited to the
dynamic size adjustments that happen in a tiling WM. It tends to
create an inner padding when set at specific window sizes. This is
most noticeable while running tmux (which I do all the time), where
the status line will have a large distance from the bottom and right
sides. Admittedly, MT is not perfect in this regard, though it is
better.

MT does not expose its theming options via a typical dotfile, but
still is easy to configure programmatically using dconf (what

own_script_mate_terminal_setup
does).

Other terminals that use the VTE widget (this is actually the
terminal emulator part, while MT is the implementation/framework)
such as {GNOME,Xfce} Terminal and Tilix, would also have the same
advantages as MT. However, they are not installed by default, while
Tilix has a ton of other features that I do not need (thanks to
tmux).

URxvt (Rxvt-Unicode), which is a popular choice for minimalist
window managers, exhibits similar problems to ST when it comes to
font drawing. It also is not installed by default. Furthermore,
I am not sure whether it is still maintained or not as version 9.22
is the one available across Stretch, Buster, Sid.

Konsole on its own is an excellent choice, but not for my particular
use case. It pulls in what seems like half the KDE-related package
list.

I am writing a book on how anyone can reproduce my custom desktop
session on Debian 10 ‘buster’ (planned for publication in late
April, early May 2019). Any kind of friction, is a hit on
usability.

Show Notes:
This is our 100th podcast episode! We hosted a live Q+R before an audience of our friends and supporters in our studios in Portland, Oregon. We also had our good friends, the band Tents, play our podcast theme music live for us. You can find the video release of this Q+R here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh2Xwja6M4s

Tim and Jon responded to three questions:

Q1: (7:40) Parker from Twitter: Why does God in Genesis 1 say let us make humanity in "our" image instead of saying let us make humanity in "my" image if he is speaking to the divine council? And how does this affect the imago dei?

Q2: (22:04) Andrew from Nottingham, UK: Does an emphasis on the heavenly council lead people away from a trinitarian view of God and rather see Jesus as one of the lesser elohim? For instance, from my limited understanding, that's how Jehovah's Witnesses view. Thanks for everything you do I find it really helpful!

Q3: (29:30) Ryan Craycraft from Middletown, Ohio: Tim, you mentioned that elohim only refers to a non-physical spiritual being. However when reading John 10:34-35, when being accused of blasphemy by the Jews for making Himself God, Jesus appears to quote Psalm 82, "Is it not written in your law, I said, ye are gods," when speaking directly to Jews. What is your take on Jesus' response here? And how do both the Scriptures of John 10 and Psalm 82 relate to elohim used in Exodus 22, where the word "judges" was translated from elohim? Thank you so much!

Thank you to all of our supporters!
