See Issue #4 for details. But the Intel-based builds have been reported to work fine on Apple Silicon via Rosetta2.

The application is signed and notarized by Apple via my personal Apple developer account, so there's none of the hassle needed to launch unsigned applications.

Longer story:

I've posted before about my emacs-builds project (https://github.com/jimeh/emacs-builds), which has primarily been aimed at nightly builds. Earlier today I added support for it to properly detect and handle pretest and release candidate git tags.

There's no brew cask for the pretest build yet though, and I'm actually undecided if one is really needed considering how short-lived its usefulness would be. But I'm happy to provide one if there's demand for it.

Also this past weekend, I finally figured out and fixed the long-standing bug with my builds which was causing native compilation to fail unless the
gcc
Homebrew formula was installed. So any builds produced after 26th of November are now fully self-contained with all dependencies, shared libraries, libgccjit, and gcc libraries, etc. all bundled into the Emacs.app bundle.

With all the shared libraries and all
*.eln
files from a full ahead-of-time native compile being bundled into Emacs.app itself, it yields a 570MB application. But this allows native-compilation to work without libgccjit, GCC, or even Homebrew being installed on the system, and also means end-users don't spend any CPU cycles on native-compiling parts of Emacs itself.

If you prefer building Emacs from source yourself, the build script that's used to make these builds is available as a separate project here: https://github.com/jimeh/build-emacs-for-macos

Edit: Added TL;DR bullet point about the app being signed and notarized.

Edit 2: Thank you kind internet stranger for the gold :)

   submitted by /u/jimehgeek
[link] [comments]

Is the traditional release model failing Ubuntu? Perhaps there is a better way to harness the rapid progress of Linux then static releases. With their focus on mobile, and a rather lackluster release around the corner, we debate if Ubuntus switch to Unity is costing them now.

Were excited to see the first press reviews go live for the Framework Laptop and the first orders land on your doorsteps today! With the FTC unanimously voting to enforce the Right to Repair just yesterday, our timing couldnt be better for delivering a great, high performance, easy to repair product. There is a ton of amazing material to read and watch, with more coming in the next weeks. Some of our favorite quotes so far are:

“A poster child for the right-to-repair movement, Frameworks modular laptop is one of the smartest designs Ive seen in a long time.”

Lori Grunin, CNET (8.5/10)

“Its the ultimate Right to Repair laptop.”

Gordon Ung, PCWorld

“The Framework Laptop is more than just [a] worthwhile experiment in modularity, its also a great laptop.”

Luke Larson, Digital Trends (4/5)

Reviewers loved the freedom to repair and upgrade, the Expansion Card system, CPU performance, keyboard feel, webcam quality, and more. Of course, inside of Framework, we gravitate towards the critical feedback that points us to where to do better. We take every bit of feedback seriously, and we want your thoughts as you start using your Framework Laptop. This lets us know where to focus for future improvements, whether that is for firmware updates, modules, or next products. A wonderful thing about our product philosophy is that improvements can go into replacement parts and upgrades that every existing user can pick up and swap to, rather than needing to wait around and pay for an entirely new product.

Were grateful to each of you who have ordered already, and were looking forward to getting your Framework Laptop to you. Batch 1 pre-orders for July delivery continue to ship out from our warehouse each day. Well start Batch 2 shipments for August delivery soon after. We have a small number of Batch 2 Framework Laptop and Framework Laptop DIY Edition units currently available for sale, with just a fully refundable $100 deposit due today. If you pre-order now, some of you will be able to receive your order within 3-4 weeks.

As proud as we are of the Framework Laptop (and were extremely proud!), the greatest thing we have created over the last 18 months is the team that built it. It takes an incredible team to build an excellent product this complex and deliver it on time. Were hiring on all fronts to continue developing the Framework Laptop ecosystem and initiate our next categories. Let us know if you know anyone who may be interested in helping us build products that are better for people and the planet.

Mickey Petersen tweets about cloning buffers and makes explicit a distinction that I must admit I wasnt clear on.

You can clone indirect buffers in #emacs with C-x 4 c — very useful if you want to browse two or more parts of a large file. Changes in either is reflected in all the others.

(But if you want them totally separated, use M-x clone-buffer or C-x x n)

— Mickey Petersen (@mickeynp) December 7, 2021

Im pretty familiar with indirect buffers, which are a clever way of looking at a buffer with two different views: you can have different narrowings, point positions, modes, and other properties while still maintaining identical text. Text changes made to the indirect buffer or the base buffer are instantly reflected in the other. Its almost always what you want but sometimes its convenient to simply make an independent copy of a buffer.

Mickeys tweet shows you how to do either. Oddly, I couldnt find
clone-buffer
in the manual but its documentation available with
describe-function
(<kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>h</kbd> <kbd>f</kbd>) and has been around for a long time.

As I said, you almost always want
clone-indirect-buffer
or its siblings. Ive used it a few times but Ive never used
clone-buffer
. Still, its nice to know theyre both available. As usual, Emacs has us covered.

Towards Open Source Sustainability

By John Mercouris

Sustainable open source is nigh on impossible. It seems that every funding model has treacherous impasses and cliffs. You're constantly walking the razor's edge between sustainability and sanity.

Donations? Your software must be in use by hundreds of thousands of people. Only broad appeal software has any realistic chance of sustainability.

Paid support? It could be years before you see your first customer.

Open core? Are you ready to alienate your community? How do you decide what belongs in your core? How do you decide what belongs in your product?

There are of course many other models, and we've evaluated them ad nauseum. Throughout their evaluation we discovered our axioms:

Nyxt will always be fully open source.

Nyxt will not be hindered by its funding model (e.g. no freemium limitations).

Nyxt will be available and accessible to all.

Nyxt will serve and empower its users.

This makes our model selection even more stringent. How can we pay our rent while continuing to work on Nyxt full-time?

After over two years of study, we've settled on our first test model:

Sell applications built on top of Nyxt (examples: a feed reader, a mail application, etc).

Your first thought might be "wait a second, that sounds just like open core!". And I would say, "sure, but, no". There are some fundamental differences.

Open core typically involves a library that is hindered without an additional (closed source) paid product. Nyxt, is fully useful, even without any of our applications. Our applications are NOT extensions to the "core", they are in fact standalone applications built utilizing Nyxt's capabilities as an application framework. Therefore, there is no "open core conflict". We don't have to divide Nyxt between paid and free features.

Furthermore, we have decided that even Nyxt's paid applications should be accessible- regardless of one's financial means. We believe that everyone should be able to profit from the wealth of knowledge available on the Internet. Therefore, if you can't afford to buy any of our applications, simply fill out a form indicating what you need our application for, and we'll send you a free copy.

So, what are we making? Based on our community feedback, we decided our first application would be a feed reader. Thus, Demeter was born! Demeter is the goddess of harvest and agriculture. She gloriously gathers the fruits of the Internet and presents them to you in an easily digestible form. We hope you like her, and we hope you'll join us on our mission towards sustainable open source development.

Thank you for your support!

-John

Check out Demeter!
