This week were going to dive into the world of Audio in Linux. For the majority of users Pulseaudio seems to do most everything you expect, however, thats not always the case when it comes to more professional audio support. This is why we have projects like Jack and the up and coming PipeWire in hopes of bringing professional and easier audio capability into Linux. Were going to be digging deep into this topic and some news from one particular distro thats looking to push Audio in Linux into the future. In addition we will be covering community feedback and of course we have our popular tips/tricks and software picks. All of this and so much more this week on Destination Linux.

First off, I want to thank this community for all the help I have gotten both through explicitly asking questions and just through watching others questoins.

Main point:

I recently switched to EXWM because its awesome. I found some rough edges that I have been trying to smooth out and wanted to share a particularly simple one.

The EXWM wiki suggets merging framemove with windmove to move between workspaces on two different monitors. I found that framemove considers not just visible workspaces but also inactive (invisible) workspaces. Imagine the following setup

Monitor 1: assigned workspaces 0 and 1; currently showing workspace 1

Monitor 2: assigned workspaces 2; currently showing monitor 2. Focus is on workspace 2.

Trying to move across frames using framemove could actually cause focus to not just switch to monitor 1 but also monitor 1 to change from showing workspace 1 to workspace 0.

Turns out it was pretty simple to modify framemove to restrict to only considering currently active frames using the predicate function `exwm-workspace--active-p`.

In case anyone else runs into this issue take a look at my forked version of framemove: https://github.com/jsilve24/framemove.

Honestly, it seems rediculous that I forked this repo since my contribution is essentially nil. That said, I really wasn't sure a better way since the original library is on the emacswiki and also maintained by the emacsmirror github user.

That said, hope this helps someone else.

Cheers.

   submitted by /u/JustinSilverman
[link] [comments]

Hi everyone! Another silly question.

I am trying to build some python package, I imported the definition from pypi (using
guix import pypi -r ...
(so a lot of packages) and then started to debug and fix some stuff.

All the python packages are built using
(build-system python-build-system)

But, there is one package in the list that in its tests is using some environment variables, and the test (and the built) fails, since the variable (
LANG
in this case) is not found at built time. The variable is obviously set, so I was wondering if guix is removing all the variables when building ... (seems like it).

Any advice about how to deal with this?

   submitted by /u/nanounanue
[link] [comments]

EmuTOS is a Free operating system for computers based on Motorola 68000 or ColdFire microprocessors. It features functionality similar to TOS, which powered the Atari ST and its successors between 1985 and 1994. EmuTOS can run on real hardware, either as ROM replacement or from floppy. Of course, it also runs happily on any Atari emulator such as ARAnyM, Hatari, or Steem SSE.

This week is our second to last release in our Old Testament Q+R series.
We talk Deuteronomy. It's an interesting read. Moses is delivering his farewell address, a soliloquy urging Israel to follow God and his commandments. But some of his commandments seem pretty strange, especially to modern Westerners. Why did God have commandments about how slaves should be treated? Did he approve of slavery? And what about Israel's treatment of other nations when they would invade?

Tim and Jon discuss these questions and many more.

Thank you to all our supporters! You are so meaningful to us!

Q's and Timestamps:

What does "love the Lord your God with all your heart soul and mind mean"? (8:25)

What does “the Lord is one” mean in the Shema? (20:40)

Is there the Holy spirit in the Old Testament/ in Deuteronomy (22:45)

Why did ancient Israel have slaves? (23:30)

Giants in the bible? Deuteronomy mentions giants, are these connected to the Nephilim in Genesis 6? (31:05)

What do the laws in Deut 20 mean about taking a wife as a captive from war? (36:53)

Does obeying the law teach you to love God? (40:35)

What is the true context of Deuteronomy? (44:30)

When you read the Bible stories, you're constantly caught in "I didn't see that coming" moments. Abraham is 75 years old when God calls him to start a new nation. Seventy-five is not the typical age to begin great adventures, much less become a parent for the first time. Moses was working for his father-in-law and any inklings of his leadership abilities had been swallowed up by the mundane work of tending herds of sheep. No one saw Moses becoming one of the greatest leaders in the history of the world. Thousands of years later, we still quote his writings to settle our most complex legal disputes.

We didn't see that one coming.

We didn't see David becoming the greatest king of Israel. When Samuel traveled to anoint David as the future king of Israel, the prophet had to ask Jesse, David's father, twice if all of Jesse's sons were standing in front of the prophet. Only then did Jesse remember David. Hardly a rousing endorsement for a future leader of the nation. His own father forgot him!

We didn't see Peter becoming the leader of the disciples, much less the early church. Yet, Jesus saw something in him no one else did. The Apostle Paul was a surprise to everyone. Remember, early in his ministry, the Apostle Paul was hated by everyone. He wasn't trusted by the church who still feared him as the determined persecutor of the Way. The religious leaders who supported his intolerant mission felt Paul had betrayed them. Who but God would have thought Paul would be writing letters the church would be reading and studying today?

If you and I were going to choose a nation to influence the world, we wouldn't have chosen Israel. There were more impressive nations all over the world. God chose ...

My quick story.

I got tired of Microsoft policy and I was looking for alternative. Tried most of well-known different distros and literally I encountered annoying bugs and inconveniences with all of them. When I heard about arch I fell in love with the idea of making OS from scratch. I swear that if the wiki and guides weren't that rich of content I wouldn't even think of trying. It took me around 10 tries in 2 days but with every other try I learnt something new. The knowledge of every step proved to me that its better to understand than try to brainlessly copy and paste. The final installation felt like a speed-run (~15minutes). Back to now, I've been using arch with KDE plasma for 3 months and it runs flawlessly. No bugs with DE which I had with popular distros. I am absolutely content with my arch experience.

In the meantime with the knowledge I got I was able to gently introduce linux (not arch) to my mother and mother-in-law. They've been using linux for a month and they are amazed how quickly it runs compared to windows.

I love the community and I am happy to be part of it.

   submitted by /u/tornado90
[link] [comments]
