<p>In this show, Tim and Jon sit down with Dr. Matthew Croasmun. Dr. Croasmun is Associate Research Scholar and Director of the Life Worth Living Program at the Yale Center for Faith &amp; Culture as well as Lecturer of Divinity and Humanities at Yale University. He completed his Ph.D. in Religious Studies (New Testament) at Yale in 2014 and was a recipient of the 2015 Manfred Lautenschläger Award for Theological Promise for his dissertation, &quot; The Body of Sin: An Emergent Account of Sin as a Cosmic Power in Romans 5-8.&quot;</p>
<p>He discusses his new book, The Emergence of Sin. It was a resource that Tim drew on heavily as he wrote and prepared for The Bible Projects Spiritual Beings video series.</p>
<p>Part 1 of the episode (0-53:15) is the interview with Dr. Croasmun. Dr. Croasmun discusses some of the highlights of scientific research, theology, and philosophy, pointing out how they overlap. Dr. Croasmun also discusses dualism and reductionism. Tim and Dr. Croasmun briefly touch on the nature of reality.</p>
<p>Then they dive into a discussion on the nature of sin. What is the exact nature of sin or of evil? Dr. Croasmun uses a few examples from nature, including the example of a bee and beehive. He posits the idea of sin or evil as a “super organism.” That is to say, not only do humans “sin” individually, but we are members of larger sin structures and systems. These are systems that create death and pain in the world.</p>
<p>Dr. Croasmun shares Romans 6:6 (New American Standard Bible):<br />
“knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin.”</p>
<p>Dr. Croasmun asks what Paul means by this phrase, “the body of sin.” Or does Paul have multiple meanings in mind?</p>
<p>Tim notes that C.S. Lewis and other writers have spoken of sin as a “parasite on the good,” meaning that sin does not exist on its own but always exists as a distortion of the good.</p>
<p>Instead of people having total autonomy over their lives, Dr. Croasmun notes, they are always in service to something. We are either in service to systems of sin or to systems under Christ.</p>
<p>The systems of sin would be examples of rampant, violent nationalism, racism, or discrimination against vulnerable people, animals, and nature.</p>
<p>Dr. Croasmun shares that its important to think of sin on three levels: an individual level, a large, super-organism and corporate level, and on a cosmic, supernatural level. All three ways will help a person to more fully understand these issues.</p>
<p>In part 2 (53:15-end), Tim and Jon recap their conversation with Dr. Croasmun. Tim says that all theologians are in a constant state of forming and reforming their ideas. He adds that sometimes, in our quest to simplify things, we actually do reality a disservice. Reality is complex, and so are the ideas surrounding God, man, nature, good, and evil.</p>

<p>My laptop broke a few weeks ago and I had no other personal computer.
The Emacs community helped me with donations and I am back in action.</p>
<p>In this video I provide an overview of what happened and what I am
currently up to.</p>
<p>Below is the text of my presentation, though note that I did not follow
it too closely:</p>
<pre><code class="language-org">#+TITLE: The Emacs community bought me a computer
#+AUTHOR: Protesilaos Stavrou (https://protesilaos.com)
#+DATE: 2021-08-29
Hello everyone! My name is Protesilaos, also known as "Prot".
As you can tell from the title of this video, this is a status update on
my current condition: *the Emacs community bought me a new computer.* I
both humbled and elated by the fact.
What follows is a summary of events and an overview of my next steps.
* The laptop's battery malfunctioned
On August 5 my laptop's battery stopped receiving power. It was
behaving erratically for a couple of days prior, as it would abruptly
not send power to the computer, shutting down, and then make the special
sound it does that it was recharging again. All this while being
plugged to the wall and with capacity to spare.
On the 5th it stopped recharging and the laptop has not worked since.
At the time I posted a short announcement on my website: there is a
dedicated section about "News", which is separate from my other
writings. Here it is:
#+begin_quote
Laptop battery out; will be back ASAP
2021-08-05
My laptops battery is no longer recharging. I double-checked: it has
probably malfunctioned. I need what remains of it to make some final
backups. Ill have no regular access to a computer afterwards. Need to
check for replacements and if they are worth it. Will reply to your
emails as soon as I can.
https://protesilaos.com/news/2021-08-05-laptop-battery/
#+end_quote
My only access to a computer was at the one available in my local
community. This is a mountainous region. Not many options.
Anyhow, I was expecting to remain out of action for several weeks due to
budget constraints. Though after eleven days since I posted the
announcement, I noticed many emails from Paypal informing me that I had
received donations. Checked my account and there were EUR 430! That
was more than I had ever received before.
I could not check all the emails at the time, because I am subscribed to
several mailing lists and without Emacs+Notmuch it was too difficult to
find what I needed. So I did not have a clear picture of what triggered
those donations. Nothing like that had never happened before.
On August 16 I posted another announcement informing people that I got
donations and would be able to buy new equipment (by the way, writing a
blog post on Gitlab is much worse than doing it inside of Emacs). I
explained that it would probably be better to invest in a mini tower
than pay for exorbitant shipping charges for a battery.
* New desktop computer
Shortly after I posted the second announcement, I contacted a friend who
knows more about computer hardware than I do. I basically know nothing.
He helped me piece together a mini tower. Some parts are new. Others
are second-hand. I am very happy with the outcome, as this is more
powerful than the laptop I had before (Emacs launches faster, I can load
a heavy website with javascript, etc.).
I also got this camera and a small microphone that I have here on my
side. Hopefully the video and audio quality are better than before, but
don't expect anything fancy.
Anyhow, while I was waiting for the computer to be assembled, the
donations kept flowing in, but I did not know about them at the time.
When I eventually set up the new machine (on the night of August 26 and
the morning after) and finally got back to my email, I started reading
through the notifications from Paypal and the other emails I received.
The sum had tripled at about EUR 1400! Many donations included a
message. Almost all were related to Emacs. Some people were thanking
me for my contributions in general. Others referred to my Modus themes.
And others still mentioned the videos I do.
I don't know whether I should post the names of the people who
contributed, as this is private information and I have no permission to
divulge it. Safe to say, there are many names on that list that I
already know. We have exchanged emails before or collaborated on some
Emacs-related project. Also, some of those names are very well known in
the Emacs community.
*I wish to thank everyone for their support.* I was not expecting it and
it has definitely made a noticeable improvement in my daily life.
I am still working through my backlog. You will get a reply in the
coming days.
* Note on recent code updates and latest philosophy post
I have been busy setting things up. I already had hand-written notes of
all sorts that I have already digitised and published. Bash scripts,
Elisp snippets, and an 8k word publication on philosophical themes.
Some highlights:
+ I am back to using BSPWM (a tiling window manager). Those of you who
may only know me from my Emacs stuff, I used to have my bespoke
computing environment, which included BSPWM+Tmux+Vim+CLI. I still
mostly using nothing but Emacs, though it is better to control the
other windows with the keyboard.
+ I now publish the derived =*.el= file of my dotemacs. This is for
people who do not need to read through a massive document that
contains more than 70k words.
+ Those are available in my dotfiles' repo. My dotemacs is also posted
in HTML on my website: https://protesilaos.com/emacs/dotemacs (includes
link to the dotfiles).
+ I am back to maintaining my Git projects. There has been an update to
my Tempus themes, which are not Emacs-related. Templates for the
Alacritty terminal emulator are now available, as well as a dedicated
=tempus-themes-alacritty= repo.
- The shell scripts for maintaining the numerous Tempus themes have
also been updated.
+ And now some philosophy. I started writing this before my laptop
failed, but I think the topic relates to the help I received from the
Emacs community. I will let you check the actual text on your own.
It is written in a dialogue style, based on real experiences. The
title is /Why you are not important/ and relates to egocentrism,
escapism, and related concepts. Instead of my text, let me read you
this, which many of you already know about.
#+begin_quote
Notmuch is not much of an email program. It doesn't receive messages
(no POP or IMAP support). It doesn't send messages (no mail composer,
no network code at all). And for what it does do (email search) that
work is provided by an external library, Xapian. So if Notmuch provides
no user interface and Xapian does all the heavy lifting, then what's
left here? Not much.

<h1 class="title">Nyxt 2 Pre-release 7</h1>
</header>
<p>We are happy to announce the seventh pre-release of Nyxt version 2.0.0. This is the final version before 2.0.0. Please help us by reporting any bugs on our <a href="https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt/issues">GitHub issue tracker</a>!</p>
<p>Nyxt 2 is a massive overhaul of the Nyxt 1 series. A lot of effort has been geared towards improving the code quality under the hood which should reflect on the overall user experience with better performance, increased stability and better accessibility.</p>
<p>Notable highlights:</p>
<ul>
<li><p><code>%slot-default</code> has been renamed to <code>%slot-default%</code>.</p></li>
<li><p>Enabled WebKitGTK process sandboxing.</p></li>
<li><p>Use GI-GTK render by default. This should fix many issues, like the hang when cancelling the print dialog.</p></li>
<li><p>Nyxt extensions are now officially supported. They can be loaded with ASDF.</p></li>
<li><p>Added Support for popups and &quot;Open in new window&quot; context menu item.</p></li>
<li><p>New simple built-in editor capabilities so that you can easily script Nyxt without opening up an external editor.</p></li>
<li><p>New <code>focus-first-input-field</code> command. (Thanks to <span class="citation" data-cites="aadcg">@aadcg</span>!)</p></li>
<li><p><code>lisp-repl</code> improvements:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>New input text area that support input methods.</p></li>
<li><p>Visual error reporting.</p></li>
</ul></li>
<li><p>Prompt buffer improvements:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>New <code>describe-prompt-buffer</code> command (bound to <code>f1 m</code> by default in the prompt buffer).</p></li>
<li><p>New <code>hide-single-source-header-p</code> and <code>hide-attribute-header-p</code> configuration options.</p></li>
</ul></li>
<li><p>Modes can be easily configured how they get displayed in the status area:</p>
<ul>
<li><p><code>visible-in-status-p</code> can be set to <code>nil</code> and the mode won't be shown. This is useful for ubiquitous modes.</p></li>
<li><p>If set, the <code>glyph</code> slot will be displayed instead of the mode name.</p></li>
</ul></li>
<li><p>New Jump to heading across all tabs.</p></li>
<li><p>Added more keybindings to <code>visual-mode</code>.</p></li>
<li><p>Download manager improvements:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>Added a prompt buffer source to list and open the downloads.</p></li>
<li><p>Report errors and canceled downloads.</p></li>
<li><p>Generate unique file name when destination exists.</p></li>
</ul></li>
<li><p>Bug fixes</p>
<ul>
<li><p>Handle all Lisp exceptions, which should prevent Nyxt from crashing on Lisp errors.</p></li>
<li><p>Command line option <code>--init</code> is now handled properly.</p></li>
<li><p>Fix WM class and name on both Xorg and Wayland.</p></li>
<li><p>Fix many commands that broke with the new prompt buffer API (<code>reload-buffers</code>, <code>bookmark-url</code>, <code>bookmark-page</code>, <code>search-buffer</code>…).</p></li>

<p>This episode continues our series examining God as a character in the Bible. Today Tim and Jon dive deep into the story of Jesus of Nazareth.</p>
<p>In part one (00:00-12:30), Tim outlines the historical path of Jesus. He says that within Jewish culture, Jesus stands unique. For example, in early Christian culture, there were hymns singing songs of praise to Jesus, not just about Jesus. Christians can “praise the name of Jesus” and Paul can use the phrase “maranatha,” which means “our Lord come” in Aramaic. Tim says the point is that Paul can write to a Hebrew or Greek audience with an Aramaic phrase and have it apparently make sense. The significance is that what Jews would have said about Yahweh“our Lord come”Christians were then saying about Jesus in Pauls letters. Tim says that by doing this you are essentially equating Jesus to Yahweh. Tim cites Larry Hurtado and his book One Lord, One God.</p>
<p>In part two (12:30-22:45), Tim outlines the most common exalted claim made about Jesus by the first Jewish Christians. It was to use the language of Psalm 110:1-2 combined with Daniel 7.<br />
Psalm 110 A poem of David:<br />
Yahweh says to my Lord:<br />
“Sit at My right hand<br />
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”<br />
The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,<br />
“Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”</p>
<p>These lines are the most-quoted Old Testament text in the New Testament. It describes God taking a “master/lord” of King David and placing him on a throne that is next to the divine throne. Its quoted by Jesus himself inMark 12:36 and 14:62, by the apostles in Acts 2:33-35; 5:31; 7:55-56, and by the Apostle Paul in Romans 8:34; 1 Corinthians 15:25; Ephesians 1:20; 2:6; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12-13; 12:2. It's also used in a Jewish context to claim that a human figure had been exalted to share in the divine rule over creation, which was equal to a claim that this figure shares in Gods unique identity.</p>
<p>Tim asks the burning historical question: How did this configuration of beliefs and practices come into existence? The New Testament offers an account for the origins of this exalted view of Jesus and their experience of him through the Spirit.</p>
<p>In part three (22:45-37:00), Tim lays out more accounts of Jesus and says that Jesus positions himself as “Yahweh returning” from the Old Testament. For example in Mark 1:1-3:<br />
“The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.<br />
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:<br />
“Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You,<br />
Who will prepare Your way;<br />
The voice of one crying in the wilderness,<br />
Make ready the way of the Lord,<br />
Make His paths straight.’”</p>
<p>“Lord” here is in Greek (kurios), the Greek Septuagint translation of “Yahweh.”<br />
In Mark 1:4-8, John the baptist is introduced as the messenger voice in the wilderness. So In Mark 1:9, were introduced to Jesus as kurios. Tim continues and says that with Jesus baptism, the story is a Father, Son and Spirit love-fest.</p>
<p>Mark 1:9-11:<br />
&quot; In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens [God as Father]. 'You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.'&quot;</p>
<p>Tim says the point is to demonstrate the unity of the triune God. Jesus is sent forth from God/Yahweh in the power of the Spirit.</p>
<p>In part four (37:00-end), Tim says after the baptism that Jesus does “Yahweh alone” things, such as forgiving peoples sins. Mark 2:5-7: &quot; And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.' But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 'Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?' [lit. “the one God”]&quot;</p>
<p>Jon asks about the relationship as a son and father. Why does Jesus call God his father? Tim says its not like Yahweh gave birth to Jesus. It carries forward Old Testament ideas that the son, specifically the eldest son, is the chosen one who will carry on the fathers mission.</p>
<p>Tim says that while the title “Father” or “my Father” or “our Father” can be confusing to modern readers, Jesus was fundamentally trying to show an intimate, precious relationship between him and Yahweh. Father is used in the Old Testament in Exodus when Yahweh refers to Israel as “my son.” Further, Christians get this language uniquely from Jesus own choice of that word to use it to describe Yahweh.</p>
<p>Tim says that there is always a point in these type of conversations when things seem mysterious and confusing and people lack language to describe this aspect of God. Tim says he thinks that this is part of the beauty of the topic.</p>

<!-- SC_OFF --><div class="md"><p>I bought a new laptop recently (ideapad slim 5 ryzen 5700u). I want good battery backup from my laptop so I discovered about this software called auto-cpufreq. I am a long time fedora user so I tried installing it in fedora but it didn&#39;t work well with it (everything become choppy) and it did not affect the battery life that much.</p> <p>Tried installing it in arch. It worked great. Battery lasts a whole day on a normal college day use. But the ram management is just horrible in this. After using it for a while, when I close all the open windows, it still for some reason shows that about 4gb of ram is used (out of 8). And if I try to open anything, it becomes unusable after the ram get full. This never happened in fedora. Its ram management was excellent. What should I do?</p> </div><!-- SC_ON --> &#32; submitted by &#32; <a href="https://www.reddit.com/user/regina_phelenge"> /u/regina_phelenge </a> <br/> <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/rgw2p9/abysmal_ram_usage_in_arch/">[link]</a></span> &#32; <span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/rgw2p9/abysmal_ram_usage_in_arch/">[comments]</a></span>
