Mike Zamansky has come up for air and after a long hiatus, hes back with another video in his Using Emacs Series. This video is about his project grading workflow. That may not seem to interesting to some folks but, as usual, he leverages Emacs and some new packages that he hasnt discussed previously.

If you havent been a teacher, you probably have no idea what a chore grading is. If you want to evaluate your students fairly, you have to bear down and cant just phone it in. Therefore, anything that eliminates routine chores and makes the process run more smoothly is a real win.

To a first approximation, Zamansky use GitHub and GitHub Classroom to handle his homework and project assignments and their grading. GitHub provides a very nice infrastructure for teaching and coordinating with students. That was true before COVID-19 and is probably more true now. The problem with it is that its Web based and involves a lot of clicking when youre dealing with several students and their repositories.

Zamansky deals with this by cloning all the student repositories to his local machine. Thats a win because he can then deal with everything from inside Emacs. For example, if he wants to compile and run some student code, thats easy from within Emacs.

A typical workflow is grading a project. Zamansky first runs
consult-find
to find all student programs implementing the project. He can direct all the paths to a separate buffer from which he can visit each in turn. Theres no navigating to each student, then to the proper project, and finally to the code. Everything is right there so he can simply step through the list. This is handled through the consult package.

Likewise, he can communicate with a student by leveraging the forge package to raise an issue in the students repository. Similarly, a student can raise an issue that can be downloaded with forge. Finally, Zamansky can use the Embark package to render PDFs or link in a separate utility, although he usually prefers to render it directly in Emacs.

If youre interested in this sort of thing, you can also take a look at this 2014 blog post and video from John Kitchin on how he handled things then: blog post, video. Im sure hes evolved his system subsequently but it was already pretty powerful and completely Emacs based.

Zamanskys video is 18 minutes, 39 seconds long so plan accordingly. Its interesting even if you arent a teacher. In any event, its nice to have Zamansky back.

I just published version
0.10.0
of the Modus themes. These are my
highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They conform with the WCAG AAA
standard for colour contrast accessibility (a minimum contrast ratio of
7:1 between the foreground and background values). You can find the
packages on GNU ELPA, MELPA, MELPA stable:

modus-operandi-theme
(light)

modus-vivendi-theme
(dark)

Below are the release notes.

Modus Operandi and Modus Vivendi version 0.10.0

By Protesilaos Stavrou info@protesilaos.com on 2020-06-24

This entry records the changes since version 0.9.0 (2020-06-03). The
present release is focused on stability and internal improvements.

Fixes and adjustments

Basil L. Contovounisios, aka @basil-conto, (and also a contributor to
core Emacs) sent several patches that do the following:

Fix top-level parentheses so that the results of

custom-theme-set-faces
and
custom-theme-set-variables
are not
passed as arguments to the first
custom-theme-set-faces
.

Fix the docstrings of the custom
modus-theme-*
faces.

Simplify the syntax of properties assigned to each face.

Improve the way styles are inherited by Dired and Ibuffer.

Basil also pointed out an inconsistency with regard to an unwanted
underline effect for the
doom-modeline-urgent
face in Modus Vivendi.
It was promptly removed.

From my part, I fixed issues 46 and 51 that concerned the way the
compiler would evaluate each themes palette. The palette is now
defined as a constant. Further information:

https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/46

https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/51

Improvements to existing faces

André Alexandre Gomes (@aadcg) provided valuable feedback and
suggestions in issue 50 on the redesign of several
org-mode
faces.

The thread is long and contains lots of screenshots:
https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/modus-themes/-/issues/50

The changes in outline:

Org checkboxes have a subtle background which gives them a more
pronounced appearance while retaining their overall simplicity.

Org dates use a more saturated variant of cyan than they did before.
It helps distinguish them from their context. Especially true for
dates inside of tables.

Org agenda dates have also undergone a slight review to match the
above.

Org time grid now uses a more appropriate foreground colour, which has
been designed specifically for unfocused context.

Org todo keywords use a more semantically-correct variant of red,
rather than the purple one they had before.

Org statistics cookies for pending tasks use a red variant as well
rather than the previous yellow one, in the interest of consistency
and to avoid exaggerations.

Other internal refinements

Subtle review of the Modus Vivendi palette. In short, it addresses:

Imbalanced levels of luminance and inconsistent differences in hue
between them and their neighbouring colours (e.g. the greens between
them, and the greens next to the yellows in the context of syntax
highlighting). The result was that they would create an undesirable
emphatic “pop out” effect when placed close to more moderate
colours.

Differences in luminance and hue could lead to scenaria where two
colours could be conflated with each other or otherwise fail to
perform their intended function.

The complete report is on my website:
https://protesilaos.com/codelog/2020-06-13-modus-vivendi-palette-review/

Major review of the
diredfl
faces, in the interest of improved
readability and harmony between the various colours. This benefits
from the palette changes in Modus Vivendi, but also from a similar
review to Modus Operandi that was documented in version 0.9.0.

Refactor the names of dedicates colours for “marking” purposes. These
are used in Dired, Ibuffer, Proced, etc. Then apply them consistently
throughout each theme.

Make sure that
stripes
uses the same colours as
hl-line-mode
.

Let symlinks use a more appropriate colour in Dired and Trashed.

Refine the use of colour in
magit-tag
,
eshell-prompt
,

message-header-name
,
log-edit-header
,
change-log-function
,

message-mml
,
message-header-name
,
message-separator
. These are
subtle (i.e. difficult) tweaks that improve the overall presentation
in context.

Make diff indicators not use an unnecessary background when the
user-facing option for “subtle diffs” is enabled (check the README for
the exact name of this option). This ensures consistency between the
indicators and the actual scope of the diffs.

Add support for the
minibuffer-line
package and extend existing
support of the faces used in the built-in Emacs info pages.

This is a special episode in our series exploring the portrayal of God as a character in the Bible!

In this episode, Tim and Jon host a friend of the Bible Projects, Dr. Michael Heiser. Dr Heiser is a Ph.D. in Hebrew studies from the University of Wisconsin. Hes a well-published author whose work has been mentioned on this podcast before. He also runs his own podcast called “The Naked Bible Podcast”.

In part 1 (0-18:05), the guys begin to talk about Gods “name”. This is a motif that is found throughout Scripture. Tim says that the Old Testament well primes the observant reader to expect an incarnation of God. The guys zero in on the commandment to not take Gods name in vain. “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord God in vain.” What does this actually mean? Is it about cussing or something more? Dr. Heiser says the commandment is much more significant than most modern readers think.

Tim shares a quote from Gerhard Von Rads Old Testament Theology.
“The name Yahweh was committed in trust to Israel alone among the nations… In it alone lay the guarantee of Yahwehs nearness and of his readiness to help… This name shared directly in Yahwehs own holiness, for indeed it was, so to speak, a double of his being. And so it had to be treated as holy in the very heart of Israels worship, to 'call on the name of Yahweh' was equivalent to true worship.” -- Gerhard Von Rad, Old Testament Theology, Vol. 1, p. 183.

Dr. Heiser says that to represent someones name is a big deal. He says that to “not take the name in vain” would be better translated to, “do not misrepresent the name."

In part 2 (18:05- 33:00), the guys dive into more stories of Gods name. Dr. Heiser makes a point that God incarnating happens repeatedly in the Old Testament, so it was expected that God would incarnate in the New Testament as the Messiah. Heiser says the question for an ancient Hebrew was not, "Is it possible for God to incarnate in a human?" but rather, "Is Jesus the chosen one whom God has incarnated in?"

The guys zero in on some stories of the Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament.
Dr. Heiser says that in the Exodus 23, the Angel has Gods name “in him”. Then in Joshua 5, “the ruler of the Lords army” or “captain of the hosts of the Lord” appears to Joshua. Joshua is told to remove his shoes, for the ground is holy. This is the same language that appears in the story of Moses and the burning bush. In the burning bush story, it is the angel that is in the bush. Dr. Heiser says this is the same figure in all the stories. The angel is both an angel and Yahweh, yet is distinct from Yahweh.

In part 3 (33:00-44:30) Tim and Dr. Heiser continue to make the point that God was known to incarnate in physical form. Dr. Heiser references Dr. Alan Segal, saying that ancient Judaism had a duality in it. God could be both Yahweh and distinct from Yahweh.

Tim refers to Jesus brothers who didnt believe Jesus was the Son of God when he was alive, but after his resurrection they did.
Tim and Dr. Heiser also refer to John 17. Dr. Heiser says that when Jesus claims to have “manifested Gods name” he is claiming in other words, “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus is the one who carried the name faithfully, doing the job Israel was supposed to.
Tim says the claim being made in John 17 is behind the whole universe being in unity, a community of eternal love.

In part 4 (44:30-end) The guys talk about the “name” or the “mark” of the beast in the book of Revelation. Dr. Heiser says this is also much more significant than modern readers realize. To carry the name of the beast means to have a willful alignment with evil.

Jon comments that he still feels a little confused. “The name” of God operates so complexly.
Dr. Heiser says this is intentional and that there is a whole “matrix of ideas” in the Bible. A key to reading the Bible well is to understand how the vocabulary used in the Bible all interconnects.
