So, I started using Emacs yesterday, and it has been amazing! I am using the Doom Emacs distribution. I decided I am going to integrate Emacs in almost every part of my life, so I decided to switch to ORG mode from libreoffice. The switch wasn't that easy but I did it. But now I need to know how to resize an image in Emacs, because sometimes I need to add images to my notes and documents. Thank you in advance

   submitted by /u/vladivakh
[link] [comments]

I published a new package which I intend to submit to GNU ELPA sometime
before the 10th of November (together with
mct.el
—see my Emacs
packages).

LIN Is Noticeable (aka LIN, lin,
lin.el
, etc.) remaps
hl-line
face
buffer-locally to a style that is optimal for major modes where line
selection is the primary mode of interaction.

Quote from the manual on the
rationale for this package:

The idea is that
hl-line
cannot work equally well for contexts with
competing priorities: (i) line selection, or (ii) simple line
highlight. In the former case, the current line needs to be made
prominent because it carries a specific meaning of some significance
in the given context. Whereas in the latter case, the primary mode of
interaction does not revolve around the line highlight itself: it may
be because the focus is on editing text or reading through the
buffers contents, so the current line highlight is more of a gentle
reminder of the points location on the vertical axis.

LIN provides the end-user with the flexibility of optimising for the
specifics of each type of interaction. The user must set up the major
modes where that is to take effect.

By means of illustration, the default style of the
hl-line
face in my
Modus themes (built into
Emacs 28 or higher) is a subtle gray background. While there is the

modus-themes-hl-line
option to make it more intense, add an accented
background, and the like, the fact remains that you still cannot apply a
case-by-case approach for different types of line highlighting.

Whereas with LIN, we can keep one style for regular text editing and use

lin-mode
in contexts where
hl-line-mode
is meant to be all about
line selection, such as in Elfeed and Notmuch buffers.

Here is a sample with the
modus-operandi
theme, with the top buffer
showing the regular
hl-line
face and the bottom buffer displaying a
Notmuch listing with
lin-mode
enabled (click to enlarge):

LINs source code is available on Gitlab:
https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/lin. There also exists a Github
mirror: https://github.com/protesilaos/lin.

This episode is the backstory to a question that we ask ourselves a lot at The Bible Project. Maybe you ask yourself this question too. What happens when we die? Where did the biblical authors think a person went after they died? Do we go to heaven, and what does the Bible tell us about heaven? This is a question that is really helpful to work and think through, and theres a ton to unpack. We put all of our thoughts into a new workbook we created called, "Heaven and Earth." Look for the link to download in the credits below.

In the first part of the episode (02:22-37:10), the guys talk about some of the confusing language in the Bible about heaven. In the Gospel of John, Jesus talks about "his Father's house" and him "going to prepare a place for you." What ideas were Jesus and John trying to communicate with these sayings? The ideas might surprise you.

In the second part of this episode (37:27-55:19), the guys talk about what it means for heaven and earth to overlap. In his gospel, John talks about Jesus followers being “not of this world.” What does this mean? Is Heaven wholly other? And what is the purpose of heaven and earth meeting if we are just going to fly off to heaven when we die? Tim unpacks the way John uses language in his gospel and what this phrase might mean. Gods world is good, and its worthy of being redeemed, and this is crucial to grasp in how we think about heaven.

I decided to maintain my own fork of Lemonbar with support for Xft,
because GitHub user krypt-n seems to have lost
interest
in their project.

My fork is on GitLab:
https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/lemonbar-xft.
Here I want to tell you the steps I followed to produce it.

Start by cloning upstream (all my links will be for SSH connections,
which require an appropriately-configured GitHub account):

git clone git@github.com:LemonBoy/bar.git ~/lemonbar-upstream

Now also clone the fork with Xft support:

git clone git@github.com:krypt-n/bar.git ~/lemonbar-xft-discontinued

Switch to the upstream repo:

cd ~/lemonbar-upstream

Prepare to pull in the Xft fork:

git remote add xft ~/lemonbar-xft-discontinued
git fetch xft

Now create a new branch with the fork:

git checkout -b xft-port

Then merge
master
into
xft-port
:

git merge master

You are mostly done. I just added an extra file that explains what this
fork is about. It is named “README-xft” and has the following:

Personal fork of Lemonbar with Xft support
==========================================
The purpose of this fork is to keep up with upstream while maintaining
the changes by GitHub user krypt-n who seems to have lots interest in
the project.[0]
The contributions by krypt-n allow Xft support (to use typefaces
supported by fontconfig). Upstream Lemonbar appears to be unable or
unwilling to merge them into master.[1]
I have decided to maintain this project, because I want to use it as
part of my custom desktop session on Debian 10 Buster.[2]
[0]: https://github.com/krypt-n/bar/pull/37#issuecomment-473265449
[1]: https://github.com/LemonBoy/bar/issues/188
[2]: https://gitlab.com/protesilaos/dotfiles

Lastly, I did the following to push my fork to GitLab:

git remote add lemonbar-xft-current git@gitlab.com:protesilaos/lemonbar-xft.git
git push -u lemonbar-xft-current --all

Done! Read my previous entry on how to compile this fork on Debian 10
Buster.

A federal grand jury today returned an indictment against the Chief Executive Officer and an associate of the Canada-based firm Sky Global on charges that they knowingly and intentionally participated in a criminal enterprise that facilitated the transnational importation and distribution of narcotics through the sale and service of encrypted communications devices. System 76 has a new professional desktop, the Linux Foundation has a new open source signing tool that could make secure software supply chains universal.

Hello everyone. Hoping to get some feedback on some general observations I've made after recently changing out some hardware.

For the past 6 months or so I have been using Arch full time, using KDE Plasma and X11. Up until a few days ago, I had been using an Nvidia RTX 2080.

Unfortunately, I encountered a hardware failure (a badly-soldered VRM capacitor came off with the thermal-pad when I removed the heatsink to apply thermal paste) and have switched to using an old AMD R9 270x I had from years ago.

I'm hoping to repair the Nvidia card by replacing the capacitor or sending it to the manufacturer, but in the meantime I'm using this rather old AMD card.

I'm using the AMDGPU drivers via Mesa, with the following output in
lscpi -v
:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Curacao XT / Trinidad XT [Radeon R7 370 / R9 270X/370X] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 04a1

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 136

Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]

Memory at df300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]

I/O ports at e000 [size=256]

Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K]

Capabilities: <access denied>

Kernel driver in use: amdgpu

Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu

The observations I've had so far:

Compositor performance is vastly superior using AMD drivers. Windows move and animate far more smoothly. I use a 165hz monitor. This is apparent on both devices, but on the AMD card, compositor is virtually free of artifacts and lag, whereas on the Nvidia device, occasional stutter would occur. I've heard that Nvidia's proprietary drivers have issues with X11.Is there configuration that can be done to mitigate this, or is it simply a fact of the driver? I did review the Nvidia Troubleshooting article on the wiki, and had all mitigations listed applied before switching cards.

Firefox performance is drastically better on AMDGPU. I have previously enabled all the proper WebRender settings per the troubleshooting article. With the Nvidia card, I had to have YouTube or Netflix open in a Chromium instance. With any video playing in Firefox, other Firefox windows experienced heavy lag when animating or scrolling. With no settings changes, this is entirely absent on AMDGPU. Additionally, even without video playing, Firefox is far smoother using the AMD device than the Nvidia.

Gaming performance in Linux on the AMDGPU is drastically worse than using the same card on Windows. For comparison, in the Lord of the Rings online (an old game), I get about 25 FPS on max settings. Windows gets 140+ FPS on identical settings during identical tests. This isn't really something I'm trying to fix, as I'm totally sure this is a result of the card being ancient and driver support being minimal. That said, if anybody has any tips, I'd love to hear them.

Given the AMD card's age, I'm certain these issues are related to driver compatibility or configuration. Still, I didn't see anything about these differences on the wiki, and I'm curious if the community has any more knowledge on the subject.

The primary reason for my asking is that (whenever this chip shortage is no longer a problem) I'm entertaining the idea of getting an AMD card. Barring this hardware failure, I would've been content to remain on that 2080 for another 5 years or so. I don't really care about bleeding-edge performance (I mostly just play old MMO's and indie titles), and if an ancient AMD card can offer me a better day-to-day experience in my preferred operating system, that's a very powerful factor for me.

Edit: I realized this might come across as a fanboyish Nvidia hate-post. I want to clarify, that's not the case. I have virtually no brand loyalty, and would be perfectly content getting my Nvidia card fixed and working as well as this old AMD card does for day-to-day stuff, since it would mean not having to buy a new gpu. I was just surprised by the differences and wanted to solicit feedback.

   submitted by /u/Aerlock
[link] [comments]

After seeing a few YT videos and reading the Arch wiki about secure boot, I understand it can be useful to prevent kernel tampering. However it does seem like a lot of effort and by using 3rd party key solutions, it wouldn't make things any more secure right? If someone tampered with the kernel when booted, it can probably even sign it perfectly fine?

Anyway I'm using systemd-boot and the given solutions seems to be a bit mixed either. The most easy way seems to sign your own keys by adding prehooks that run on every kernel upgrade?

I would like to use SB to upgrade Windows, but with all those things considered I simple could just run W11 in a VM instead.

   submitted by /u/improve-me-coder
[link] [comments]
