In part one (0:00-19:00), the guys introduce Jesus and the Gospels into the conversation. Tim remarks that there is a whole field of scholarship dedicated to studying how Christ is portrayed as a new Adam or a new Son of Man.

Tim focuses on Jesus in the Gospel of Mark.
Mark 1:12-13:
“Immediately the Spirit cast out into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness forty days being tested by the Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.”

Tim notes that the phrase “cast out” (Grk. εκβαλλω) is first used in the Old Testament account of Adam and Eves explusion from the garden of Eden (Gen 3:24). He also says that both of these stories are meant to be analagous to each other. Jesus is in the wilderness (garden) with the wild animals (Adam and Eve) in the presence of the angels (cherubim and cosmic mountain).

Tim cites a quote by biblical scholar Brandon Crowe: “Whereas Adam failed the temptation in the garden and was cast out, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, a setting associated with Israels testing and failure. Unlike Adam, Jesus does not fail the test, and in both stories of Adam and Jesus “expulsion” the same Greek word ekballo is employed. In the wilderness, Jesus is with the wild animals, but remains unharmed [T.M. like Daniel], which is supposed to strike the reader as unusual. Jesus peaceful coexistence with the wild animals signifies his authority over them, and recalls Adams original dominion over the animals in the garden. Like Adam, Jesus has been granted the worldwide dominion, becoming the instrument of Gods dominion over the world.” -- Brandon Crowe, The Last Adam: A Theology of the Obedient Life of Jesus in the Gospels, 24

Tim points out that the temptation of Jesus in Mark, specifically the details of the angels serving him and him being with the wild beasts, is meant to show that Jesus is the new Adam, the perfect Adam who can coexist peacefully with animals in the wild.

Further, Tim points out that Jesus is portrayed as having authority over the other spiritual beings (angels) to show that Jesus is the ideal Son of Man figure.

In part two (19:00-18:30), Tim and Jon take a side tour and discuss how in Hebrew there are places where the Hebrew word adam can refer to either a specific character, Adam, or to humanity as a whole. The guys also discuss the nuances between the terms Son of Man and Son of God. Tim notes that Psalm 2 is a key passage for understanding how both of these terms link together.
To be called the image of God as humanity means to be the creatures where heaven and earth are bound together.
Psalm 2: “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles. The One enthroned in heaven laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain. I will proclaim the Lords decree: He said to me, You are my son; today I have become your father.
Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.’”

In part three (18:30-end), Jon asks why heaven and earth are supposed to be ideally imaged in humanity. Tim replies that humanity is meant to be related to the elohim. We are not elohim, but we are to share in a similar status of having a divine ability to rule.

Tim and Jon then dive into the temptation of Jesus portrayed in Matthew 4:8-11:
“Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only. ” Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.”

Tim notes that there is only one other time in the New Testament where Jesus utters the phrase, “Get behind me Satan” or “Go, Satan” (in the NIV). Its in Matthew 16:23: “Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."

Tim notes that Jesus obviously sees that a satanic mindset is one where the mindset is human-focused and set on how a beast would rule the world, one of power and strength not of sacrifice.

Tim points out that after these temptations, you are supposed to see Jesus as a new Adam. He peacefully coexists with animals. Hes a new Daniel; he doesnt bow down to the rulers. Hes a new David because he rules righteously. Jesus is the full package.

Ive always hated filler chat/email messages like “Hello! How are you doing?”,
so Im very glad we have sites like nohello.net where
we can point people who are in the habit of using them.1

In case youre wondering why is this a problem in the first place heres a nice summary:

People who do this are generally trying to be polite by not jumping right into the request, like one would in person or on the phone - and thats great! But its 2021 and chat is neither of those things. For most people, typing is much slower than talking. So despite best intentions, youre actually just making the other person wait for you to phrase your question, which is lost productivity (and kinda annoying).

Being polite is nice, but such filler messages add no value to an asynchronous communication. I know that youre reaching out to me with a question/task and Id just like to know what this it is, so I can do something about it. Getting to the meat of the conversation quickly helps you and me both be more productive.

It may seem trivial, but asking your question before getting that initial salutatory reply also allows for asynchronous communication. If the other party is away, and you leave before they come back, they can still answer your question, instead of just staring at a “Hello” and wondering what they missed.

Cant agree more! I always cut right to the chase with my messages and advise everyone to do the same. Here are some other opening messages that you should avoid:

Can I ask you a question?

Can you help me with something?

Are you around?

Do you have a few minutes?

Specific messages always produce better results. Ask your questions right away and always clarify what would you like to discuss:

Are we ready with the presentation about project X?

Can you help me with the code review for Y?

I need to discuss the plans for feature Z ASAP. Do you have time for quick call now?

Simple and effective.

Theres also https://no-hello.com that I know of. Probably there are other similar sites as well. Seems way too many people have been frustrated by pointless messages. ↩

You'll pull yourself towards them by the process of imitation.

You might think comparing yourself to someone is different than imitating, but imitating and comparing are the same thing. When you compare yourself to someone, you start pulling yourself towards them. You have to be careful you don't get envious or resentful. In some sense, by continually imitating somebody at a higher level, you're always unfulfilled. In another sense, that means you're always growing.

Jung believed the book of Revelations had been tacked onto the New Testament because the Christ in the gospels was portrayed too much as a figure of mercy. Whereas, in Revelations, Christ is portrayed primarily as a judge. Jungs explanation was that every ideal is a judge. The ultimate ideal is the ultimate judge. The ultimate ideal judges your soul. The higher the ideal, the more severe the judge. That should make you quake. When your conscience assaults you in the middle of the night for things youve done wrong, its because youre quaking in your boots, morally, because youve failed to live up to this ideal.

Please do not forget to subscribe to the channel in order to enjoy weekly videos.
Package cl is deprecated

Ive been ignoring this startup message for maybe a year now (since the release of Emacs 27).
After recently updating all my packages (and completely breaking my emacs setup) I decided to go through all the startup messages and start fixing things.

The Fix

Searching around the fix is straight forward.
Instead of requiring
cl
the correct name is now
cl-lib
.

(require 'cl-lib)

I knew of one place where I had used
cl
(I used the
return-from
function to do an early exit from a
while
loop), but after making the change, I was still getting the startup message.
Unfortunately that meant the startup message was coming from one of the many packages I had installed, how would I ever find it?

Finding
cl
requirements

Luckily, we have the emacs stackexchange, with this handy snippet:

(require 'loadhist)
(file-dependents (feature-file 'cl))

Showing the one place with a
cl
requirement:

Users/gonsie/.config/emacs/elisp/color-theme-6.6.0/color-theme.el

Unfortunately this is in one of the packages Ive been hand carrying around for over 10 years (longer than my dotfiles repo has existed).
Its finally time to update the implementation of my preferred color theme, but that is a post for another day.

ProtonMail is an end-to-end encrypted email service founded in 2014 at the CERN research facility by Andy Yen, Jason Stockman, and Wei Sun. I first heard Rush Limbaugh in the early ’90’s, then in the summer of ’92, I read his book “The Way Things Ought to Be,” which had a profound influence on my thinking, and was a means the Lord used to bring me to the Gospel. This is a small tribute or thank you to […]

Theming Nyxt, midnight theme

By John Mercouris

Theming Nyxt is straightforward and powerful. Every class has an associated style slot (attribute) composed of CSS. You can change/append to this slot to modify the default theme, or create your own from scratch.

For the purposes of this article, we'll be modifying the default theme to make a dark version.

The first thing we'll change is the appearance of the prompt-buffer:

(define-configuration prompt-buffer
((style (str:concat
%slot-default%
(cl-css:css
'((body
:background-color "black"
:color "#808080")
("#prompt-area"
:background-color "black")
;; The area you input text in.
("#input"
:background-color "white")
(".source-name"
:color "black"
:background-color "gray")
(".source-content"
:background-color "black")
(".source-content th"
:border "1px solid lightgray"
:background-color "black")
;; The currently highlighted option.
("#selection"
:background-color "#37a8e4"
:color "black")
(.marked :background-color "darkgray"
:font-weight "bold"
:color "white")
(.selected :background-color "black"
:color "white")))))))

What we've done here is concatenated the
%slot-default
of the minibuffer style with our own CSS that changes the background color and text color.

Next, let's handle the appearance of internal buffers. Internal buffers are used when you create any kind of buffer that is populated by Nyxt (help buffers, list messages, list buffers, etc).

;;; Panel buffers are the same in regards to style.
(define-configuration (internal-buffer panel-buffer)
((style
(str:concat
%slot-default%
(cl-css:css
'((body
:background-color "black"
:color "lightgray")
(hr
:color "darkgray")
(a
:color "lightgray")
(.button
:color "lightgray"
:background-color "gray")))))))

Here we've added styling for
<hr>
elements and for
.buttons
.

Finally, we come to our first, and only special case, windows. For windows we must set the
message-buffer-style
to control the appearance of the message area at the bottom of the window.

(define-configuration window
((message-buffer-style
(str:concat
%slot-default%
(cl-css:css
'((body
:background-color "black"
:color "white")))))))

Et voila!

We hope you enjoy making Nyxt your own. Please feel free to share your themes that you create on our communication channels, we'd love to see what you can come up with! Thanks for reading :-)

Future Work

We believe that this system could be further enhanced by the creation of a
define-theme
macro/framework (built on top of the
define-configuration
macro). This framework could provide facilities to design and manage themes.

(define-theme my-theme
((buffer "custom-css-here)
(internal-buffer "other-css-there")))

Installation/uninstallation of themes could be fully functional. You could test and develop as many themes as you like without leaving your system in a corrupt state. We're excited to see what we can come up with together!
