Maintaining servers falls into two phases: First, bang head until
|

server works; second, capture effort into some automation tool like
|

Puppet or Chef. Recently, I’ve been playing around with making the
|

first phase closer to the second.

For lack of a better word, I’m calling it literate devops.

Hej fellow people of the future ;-),

So let me preface by saying that this was the part that annoyed me the most about executing a
guix upgrade
, waiting for the profile generation as the last step in the process. Back when I first installed guix on an hdd for testing, this process would sometimes take as much as 1,5-2h with about 180 packages. Even after I switched to SDD, this would feel like the lenghtiest part of the upgrade process, for reasons I never quite understood.

Today I did another
guix pull && guix upgrade
, followed by
guix remove PACKAGENAMES
. I wanted to declutter my profile and speed up said lengthy "profile generation" process. I had been prepared that removing 22 packages would still take 5-10 minutes, the biggest part of it being the profile generation part. But then... it took like 15 seconds.

What has happened? I mean, I am very delighted with this change, because this makes installing and removing packages a literal breeze. I repeat, I've hated doing this on guix because it took just soooo long. Now, having the time I need to wait reduced to about 10% of its original time feels like something either must be wrong, or some kind of black magic has occured which definately cannot be of good origin.

Does this have to do with the "taming the stat storm" article that has been written about 1,5months ago by ludovic courtes? Have you also experienced something similar in the very recent time (I'm speaking about the last 1-2 weeks)? If not, can you offer an explanation why, after about 2 years of casual use, my profile generation FINALLY stops being a headache?

Have a good day, fellows!

EDIT: u/zimoun has provided me with valuable information as to why the speed-up has occurred. Thanks a bunch for the support, fellow guixter, for helping a newbie realise how awesome guix actually is and at which pace it gets better and better (*cough* guix home *cough*).

To quote:

First, another build farm (Build Coordinator behind bordeaux.guix.gnu.org) had been added recently, and second ci.guix.gnu.org has received several improvements). So the avaibility of substitutes is better.

The stats storm helps. And different strategies for compressing the substitutes depending if you are CPU-bound or Network-bound.

   submitted by    /u/olivuser
[link]   [comments]

If it wasn’t for Emacs and other Linux tricks I’ve learned, I’d be happy with my office Mac. But That’s not how I do things. As it turns out, the transition from Linux to macOS wasn’t as smooth as I thought. I have a lot of troubleshooting to cover, and I hope to do so in a couple of parts. Here’s the first part of my recent adventures.

|
||||

With my work responsibilities gravitating toward JAMF and remote Apple device support, an irony became clear: I haven’t used a Mac. 90% of my work was done on a PC with a VM that housed Emacs since I developed my org-mode routine. This came to light in a recent work meeting, and so it was decided. My main work machine now is a Mac.

|
||||

I run Linux full time for my personal needs. Both my home Desktop, which I write this post on right now, and my Lenovo Thinkpad I take with me on trips run Linux Mint. I hope you’ll excuse me then for not knowing that you can turn on right-click on a magic mouse, or that you can copy-paste whole lines of code into the Terminal simply by dragging them. These sort of things become obvious only when you use a Mac day-to-day, which is what I spent my first couple of days on; getting myself to feel at home.

|
||||

With the basics done and the Mac ready to do work1, it was time for the main event: installing Emacs from Homebrew and run it naively. I still have the option of remoting into my PC with the VM on it and run Emacs in a Linux environment, but the fun is in trying new things.

|
||||

I also had a new challenge to conquer. I wanted to keep my org files off the Mac. My personal org files are saved on a folder named “Personal,” which I only sync to my personal machines; this time though, I wanted everything off the hard drive. This included my “Archive” folder with its many (over 100) weekly org files containing my tasks and projects for work. I’ve been using TRAMP regularly to access files at home on my Synology, so that was the solution I was aiming for.

|
||||

After working out a newbie problem with Homebrew2, I got Emacs installed. Next, I wrote the lines to load MELPA in my init, since I needed to install my packages before I could run my full settings file, which uses these packages.

|
||||

I launched Emacs and was ready to start installing my familiar packages. Instead, I encountered my first issue:
Error retrieving: https://melpa.org/packages/archive-contents (error connection-failed "connect" :host "melpa.org" :service 443)
It took some research, but I found out that
(setq gnutls-algorithm-priority "NORMAL:-VERS-TLS1.3")
solved that problem. I am not sure exactly why, but that’s the solution that ended up working. Now that I was able to load MELPA, I started downloading the packages I needed one by one by looking into my
Emacs_settings.org
file, which I where I save my global Emacs settings with instructions.

|
||||

Usually, I just copy over my Emacs packages over scp (usually in Emacs, over TRAMP already) and fix whatever issues remain from inside Emacs. This time though I wanted an independent setting file which will define a different path (one that would include the TRAMP syntax to dial back home) for my agenda folders. I thought it would also be a good idea to install the packages fresh instead of relying on packages that are working in Linux.

|
||||

I’ve encountered a couple of Mac issues that I wasn’t prepared for along the way, but this is is where I’ll pick up the story next time.

One (obvious?) thing I want to mention is that remoting into a Windows computer with a Mac is a breeze. Microsoft Remote Desktop automatically launches the connected machine full-screen, and then it’s a simple two-finger swish to move back and forth. My Windows keyboard (it’s the Microsoft ergonomic design, which is why I keep it; otherwise I’d switch to a Mac keyboard) makes it easy to switch back to “Windows Mode” in my head. But try to remote to a Mac from a Windows machine. Ugh. Unless you use VNC, which comes with its own bag of issues (not to mention security problems) you have to count on some third party software, and these have been a mixed bag of pain in the rear. ↩︎

Since all programs have to be installed under an admin account, I wrongly assumed Homebrew also needed to be installed this way. This later caused a bunch of permission problems and difficulties installing (brew) different packages. I found out about this problem with a friend and good ol' Brew doctor and fixed these permission issues. ↩︎

Fontset?

Fontset is a feature of Emacs that allows you to bundle together multiple fonts and use them as a single font, such that it covers more characters than a single font could have. For example, you can combine a Latin font, a Greek font and a Chinese font together.

With fontsets, we can use different Unicode fonts for different faces. For example, serif Latin and Chinese font for a “serif” face, and sans serif Latin and Chinese font for a “sans” face. Without fontsets, we can only set different Latin fonts to faces and use a single fall-back Chinese font.

Create a fontset

A fontset is recognized by its name. Each fontset has two names, one short and one long. The short name looks like
fontset-xxx
. The long name is a X Logical Font Description with last two fields being
fontset
and
xxx
. For example,

-*-ibm plex mono-medium-*-*-*-13-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-my fontset

Emacs come with three fontsets by default:
fontset-startup
,
fontset-standard
and
fontset-default
. We only care about
fontset-default
; it is the ultimate fall-back when Emacs cannot find a font to display a character. But more on that later.

To create a fontset, you can use
create-fontset-from-fontset-spec
and pass it a bunch of X Logical Font Descriptions, each for a font you want to include. I find that tedious. Instead, I like to create a fontset with a single ASCII font and use
set-fontset-font
to add other fonts later, like this:

(create-fontset-from-fontset-spec

If you pass your fontset through the
:font
attribute in
set-face-attribute
, Emacs takes the ASCII font from the fontset and only uses the ASCII font for the face1. The real way to do it is to use the undocumented
:fontset
attribute:

(set-face-attribute

'some-face nil :fontset "fontset-my fontset")

That’s not all. While the above code works for most faces, setting
:fontset
for
default
will not work as you expected, because Emacs again only takes the ASCII font, even if you use the
fontset
attribute2. So don’t set the fontset for the
default
face; instead, just modify
fontset-default
(its the ultimate fall-back fontset we mentioned earlier) for Unicode fonts, and use whatever method you like for ASCII font. If you read Emacs, fonts and fontsets, you’ll know we can modify
fontset-default
by either

(set-fontset-font "fontset-default" ...)

or

(set-fontset-font t ...)

Technically you could set the
font
attribute of a frame to a fontset by
set-frame-font
and it works fine. But as soon as you change any font-related attributes in
default
face, like font size, your fontset in the frame attribute will be overwritten by the font derived from
default
face. So the best way is still to just modify
fontset-default
.

1

According to the source.

2

Basically, if the face is
default
,
set-face-attribute
calls
set_font_frame_param
(source), which only looks at the
:font
attribute (source).

Further reading

Command
lists-fontsets
lists all the defined fontsets.

Command
describe-fontset
shows which font is each character assigned to in a fontset.

Manual page: Fontsets, Emacs User Manual

Another manual page: Fontsets, Emacs Lisp Manual
