On this episode of Destination Linux, we discuss some distro news with VyOS & Fedora. We have great follow up regarding the kernel performance killer news we discussed last week. Some very big updates are coming from great software projects like Blender & Kodi. Later in the show, we check out some of Zeb’s favourite type of games! We also talk about the Plasma Mobile related news from Necuno Solutions. All that and much more including our Tips, Tricks and Software Spotlight picks!

Tips & Tricks:
Using ‘cp’ to copy files in Linux is a very convenient tool. However, knowing these switches can save you from making mistakes:
-i : Confirm before overwriting
-n : No overwriting
-b : Overwriting with backup
-r : Recursive copying
-u : Overwrite if the target file is old or doesn’t exist

Ex: $ cp -b sourcedirectory targetdirectory will overwrite the file if it exists but creates a backup file first.

dark-mode keeps your screen dim

By John Mercouris

Nyxt has a brand new dark-mode!

How to use it?

Simple, just enable
dark-mode
. That's it! Nyxt will do its best to attempt to configure the screen to be dark, while remaining legible and leaving images/videos unaltered.

If you want to selectively enable/disable dark-mode for different domains, you can leverage auto-mode to automatically/enable dark-mode. To find out more check out our article about auto-mode here.

Extended Customization Options

If you want to change the behavior of dark-mode, you have a couple of options:

You can either:

match styles based on the domain

match styles based on a custom predicate

You can source your styles from:

embedding them directly in your init file

placing them in a file on your system

downloading them from a remote URL

In order to do this you must make a
style-association
struct and add it to your
style-associations
list of your
dark-mode
configuration.

Let's begin with our struct definition:

(defstruct style-association
(url)
(predicate)
(style)
(style-file)
(style-url))

If you want to match based on URL, provide a URL.

If you want to match based on a predicate, provide a predicate that accepts a single argument (the URL) and returns t or nil depending on whether the style should be applied.

If you want to specify a style directly in your
style-association
struct, use the
style
.

If you want to specify your style via a file use a
style-file
with a full path to the file to load the style from.

If you want to specify your style via a URL use a
style-url
with a full path to the URL with the file to load the style from. Nyxt will download the style and cache it on your system (by default in
~/.local/share/nyxt/dark-mode-css-cache
).

Using this struct definition let's go through some examples:

Setting the style based on URL

Hi guys, My emacs has been quite slow (esp. with lsp-mode/lsp-dart), I've downloaded gccemacs to hoping for some performance gain... I noticed that it took around 129 secs to startup (
(emacs-init-time)
)); I tried it again, and this time, it took around 5.7 secs so I think it was compiling the
.el
files on the first run. Next thing I did was to start the normal emacs build to compare; This took around 150 - 200 secs, but like 10-12 secs on subsequent launches. When I tried gccemacs again, It took just as long as the first time again.

It seems that the
.elc
files are not fully compatible between the two and so they are recompiled... Is there anything I can do about this? I'd love to use the gccemacs, but doesn't seem to be stable yet as I keep on getting
comp warnings
pop up in a
Warnings
buffer which is disturbing.

I thought gccemacs would compile down to
.eln
while the normal emacs would compile to
elc

My gccemacs is v28.0.5 and normal emacs is like v27.2 Thanks in advance.

   submitted by /u/hungry_m8
[link] [comments]
