"Typology" is a fancy word for how God put intricate details about Jesus throughout the stories of the Old Testament. I'm not talking about prophecy here, although there is a relationship between typology and prophecy. I'm saying that Jesus is the main topic of the Bible so much that God shaped history and people's lives so that the Bible would become a beautiful literary tapestry that shows Jesus throughout it's pages. From the story of Joseph going from slavery and presumed death to the right hand of Pharaoh as a savior of many, to the feasts of Israel demonstrating the very nature and mission of Jesus to die for our sins.
In today's interview I will explain what "typology" is, give a number of examples of it and answer objections to it.
Thanks to Micah Gunn for having me on his podcast, Truth Be Told, to do this interview.

On this very special episode of Destination Linux, we are joined by 2 friends of the show. Unfortunately, Zeb was sick this week so we needed a last minute guest host, thankfully Gabriele Musco of TechPills stepped up to help out. This episode we discuss a ton of hot topics in the Linux world including Microsoft making 60,000 patents available to the Open Invention Network (OIN), Plex joins the universal package format game with a new Snap, Google+ announces it is shutting down after a security bug debacle, there were some patches proposed to the Linux kernel’s new Code of Conduct.
In this episode, Tim and Jon continue their conversation on The Day Of The Lord. The guys will build on their discussion on Babylon from part one as they try to get at what the biblical authors think about technological advances. Why did God seem to disapprove of man's invention of the brick in the story of the Tower? The guys will also spend some time talking about the exodus of the Hebrew people from ancient Egypt. It's one of the key events in Scripture, and its where the term Day of the Lord comes from. Thinking about God as a Warrior God is a little hard for us to swallow in our modern context, but its undeniably a part of his attributes, and he shows up in Scripture, time and time again, to fight for the oppressed.

In the first part of the episode (01:46-13:37), the guys talk about technology in the Bible. Are technological advances bad? Does technology really detract from Gods glory? Tim brings this back around to the idea of subduing creation in Genesis 1. Technology can bend towards evil or exalting humans, but it can also be used to carry out the task that God gave in the garden. If humans realize that they live under Gods authority and reign, they can use whatever their realm of influence and opportunity is and bend towards the common good and in the name of Jesus.

In the next part of the episode (13:56-42:27), the guys continue the story of the Old Testament and pick up in Egypt, where Gods people are being enslaved by Pharaoh. In the Bible we see that the enemy of Gods people is the ruler or nation who doesnt acknowledge God as authority and who redefines good and evil based on their terms. Pharoah is doing this, but well see it throughout the rest of Scripture as well. In this story, God defeats and Moses tells the people to remember the day. That same day is celebrated in the feast of Passover. The celebration and remembrance of Passover as a day, a moment in time, is where the term, Day of the Lord, comes from. This biblical theme is all about a moment of time where God confronts human evil on a large scale and brings down the oppressor.

I just published version
0.6.0
of the Modus themes. These are my
highly-accessible themes for GNU Emacs. They conform with the WCAG AAA
standard for colour contrast accessibility (a minimum contrast ratio of
7:1 between the foreground and background values). You can find the
packages on MELPA (and soon on ELPA as well):

modus-operandi-theme
(light)

modus-vivendi-theme
(dark)

This release contains lots of refinements and additions.

Let me start with an administrative point: I have completed the process
of assigning my copy rights to the Free Software Foundation. This
covers every contribution I make to GNU Emacs. In practice, it means
that the Modus themes can now be included in the official ELPA archive
and theoretically be shipped with Emacs itself. The ELPA inclusion is
ongoing. Once it is completed, I will update the docs accordingly.

The administrative change has no effect on the way this project is
handled. I still am the developer/maintainer and will continue to
improve things further. If you still have questions, feel free to
contact me: https://protesilaos.com/contact

Moving on to the changes since version 0.5.0 (2020-01-26).

Added support for:

alert

apropos (built-in)

dap-mode

deft

dim-autoload

dired-git

enhanced-ruby-mode

gbd-mi.el (built-in library)

helm-ls-git

helm-xref

imenu-list

jira (org-jira)

js2-mode

jupyter

org-pomodoro

origami

rmail (built-in)

vc-print-log (built-in)

window-divider-mode (built-in)

xref (built-in)

Refinements to existing faces:

A new subset of “nuanced” accent colours has been introduced. These
are named {red,green,yellow,blue,magenta,cyan}-nuanced. Their purpose
is to be used in contexts where lots of structured information is
presented to the user, but each component does not need to draw too much
attention to itself (e.g. Orgs metadata). As always, their contrast
ratio is designed to always be >= 7:1 relative to the backgrounds they
may be combined with.

Greatly improve the support for Gnus, even though most changes are
subtle and are made in the interest of consistency. The group levels
now make use of the “nuanced” palette where appropriate (to denote
levels of lower importance).

Several refinements for Org, including the use of “nuanced” colours
for various metadata tags. The agenda headers will now be scaled
appropriately and use a variable-pitch font if the user sets the
relevant customisation values of the theme they are using (check the
documentation in each theme file or the repos README).

Lots of refinements for Helm. Some of these were introduced to align
the overall aesthetic with equivalent metaphors in Ivy. Others are
meant to improve the styles of the headers and make various constructs
consistent with their variants in the Helm ecosystem but also with their
non-Helm counterparts (such as xref file names with and without Helm,
but also with Helms grep).

Improve the colours of buttons in contexts such as M-x customize.
This is especially noticeable in modus-vivendi-theme (the dark theme)
where the buttons are a darker shade of grey rather than the original
lighter one.

Keycast now uses styles that are more consistent with the overall
aesthetic of the Modus themes. This means that the mode line indicators
are blue-ish (blue is generally used for highlights in the mode line,
but also when hovering over an item with the mouse pointer). The pseudo
button effect (colours + 3d) has been removed in favour of a flat look,
in line with the flatness of the mode line itself. Whereas before the
keycast faces where designed to be consistent with the packages
defaults.

There were also a few minor refinements for:

calendar and diary

icomplete

mm-uu-extract

nobreak-hyphen and nobreak-space

org-habit

tooltip-mode

Finally, the Commentary section of each theme has been greatly expanded.
It now includes the user-facing customisation options and the complete
list of supported packages.

modus-themes.

By Jeffry Blair, a Northern Seminary DMin graduate and pastor. He was asked by a group of leaders to advise them on how to finish seminary while in ministry and Jeff puts together a wise presentation for all of us.

I want to encourage you to complete your education. I hope to show you why you should and how you can. Here are six strategies for finishing your studies while you are up to your armpits in ministry.

One - Feel the Weight

I was twenty-three years old in the fall of 1999 when I first stepped foot on the campus of Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth. Each student received a copy of “The Religious Life of the Theological Student” by the Princeton theologian, B. B. Warfield, who said,

The ministry is a learned profession; and the man without learning, no matter with what other gifts he may be endowed, is unfit for its duties. But learning, though indispensable, is not the most indispensable thing for a minister. ‘Apt to teach’—yes, the minister must be.... Not apt merely to exhort, to beseech, to appeal, to entreat, not even merely to testify… but to teach. And teaching implies knowledge:he who teaches must know… But aptness to teach alone does not make a minister; nor is it his primary qualification… A minister must be learned, on pain of being utterly incompetent for his work. But before and above being learned, a minister must be godly.[1]

Warfield was right, and this is the big idea of his speech: godliness is the indispensable attribute of the pastor. As Robert Murray M’Cheyne said, “A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God.” Warfield was also at great pains, however, to contend that Christian pastors must be capable teachers (1 Timothy ...

Continue reading...

Not too long ago, a pharmacist in Nashville was arrested for diluting cancer drugs while still charging full price for the prescription. Local doctors would phone in their patient's prescriptions and this pharmacy would mix the required drugs. Patients would drop by the pharmacy, pick up their drugs and take them as prescribed. If the cancer had been caught in time, the medicine, mixed with a lot of prayer, would do its work. The pharmacist had developed a very successful practice. Both doctors and patients had learned to trust him.

Sometime in the past few years, the pharmacist had gotten into money trouble. So, he started diluting the medicine. That is, he wouldn't put as much of the chemicals into the solution that attacked the cancer cells and still charged the full price for the prescription. His scheme was working pretty well until the doctors noticed a consistent downturn in their outcomes. People with similar illnesses were no longer responding to the medicine. A routine investigation discovered the problem. The medicine wasn’t strong enough to do the work.

Some days, I wonder if we've done the same thing with the gospel. For years, experts, whoever they were, told us as preachers that we should with go easy on the guilt and condemnation in our sermons. On one hand, I can see their point. I grew up in a church where we were held over hell like marshmallows. We were afraid all the time, never knowing when one sin would be the final straw, forcing God to give up and throw us into hell.

So, we did. We laid off the guilt and preached grace upon grace. That didn't work either.

For one reason, it's not honest. Unless you're dealing with a psychopath, people know when they're doing wrong. Most ...

Continue reading...

Creating a Docker image isnt particularly difficult, but I never do
it often enough to remember the incantations required. Yesterday I
needed a Docker image for running CI jobs on Circle CI.
There are some great pre-built images out there, but I couldnt find
the combination of Java 17, Leiningen, and Node that I was looking
for. This is a quick guide to how to build your own image with the
tools you need.

Great Artists Steal

First off we want to find a suitable base image to start with. Docker
images are built in layers, so we can start with a solid foundation
pre-written by an expert and simply layer on the additional bits we
need. Circle CI has a great set of pre-built Docker
images that take care of the heavy lifting.

Here well use their
cimg/openjdk:17.0.1-node
image. This is a
variant of their
cimg/openjdk:17.0.1
image which already includes
Node. Two pieces already done for us!

Create a new
Dockerfile
and add the following:

FROM cimg/openjdk:17.0.1-node
MAINTAINER Your Name <you@your.domain>

To layer on Leiningen, I cribbed the relevant incantations from the
official Clojure Docker images. From that
page you can click on any of the
Dockerfile
links to see how theyre
defined and borrow what you need.

In my case, I simply grabbed these lines and appended them to my

Dockerfile
:

### INSTALL LEIN ###
ENV LEIN_VERSION=2.9.8
ENV LEIN_INSTALL=/usr/local/bin/
WORKDIR /tmp
# Download the whole repo as an archive
RUN set -eux; \
sudo apt-get update && \
sudo apt-get install -y gnupg wget && \
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/* && \
mkdir -p $LEIN_INSTALL && \
wget -q https://raw.githubusercontent.com/technomancy/leiningen/$LEIN_VERSION/bin/lein-pkg && \
echo "Comparing lein-pkg checksum ..." && \

sudo mv lein-pkg $LEIN_INSTALL/lein && \

else \
gpg --batch --keyserver hkps://keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 20242BACBBE95ADA22D0AFD7808A33D379C806C3; \
FILENAME_EXT=zip; \
fi && \
wget -q https://github.com/technomancy/leiningen/releases/download/$LEIN_VERSION/leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.$FILENAME_EXT && \
wget -q https://github.com/technomancy/leiningen/releases/download/$LEIN_VERSION/leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.$FILENAME_EXT.asc && \
echo "Verifying file PGP signature..." && \
gpg --batch --verify leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.$FILENAME_EXT.asc leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.$FILENAME_EXT && \
gpgconf --kill all && \
rm -rf "$GNUPGHOME" leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.$FILENAME_EXT.asc && \
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/java && \
sudo mv leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.$FILENAME_EXT /usr/share/java/leiningen-$LEIN_VERSION-standalone.jar && \
sudo apt-get purge -y --auto-remove gnupg wget
ENV PATH=$PATH:$LEIN_INSTALL
ENV LEIN_ROOT 1

Im very glad I didnt have to write all of that myself because I
would have been tempted to cut corners on the validation of the
Leiningen package contents and that wouldnt have been good.

Building the Image

Now we have everything we need to build the image. Open a shell to
the location where you put the
Dockerfile
and run the following
command (making appropriate name substitutions for your Docker
organization and desired image name):

docker build --tag collbox/clojure-ci .

Docker will pull the base image, layer on your changes, and create a
new local image.

If youre ready to share that image with your coworkers or build
server, push it to Docker Hub with:

docker push collbox/clojure-ci

By default the image will be private. If you havent added any
private information, you can make the image public and make it easy to
access without adding authentication. Do this by logging into Docker
Hub, clicking the image, “Settings”, and “Make public”.

Next Steps

Now youre ready to use your new Docker image from a project by simply
using the name we tagged the image with above (
collbox/clojure-ci
,
in this example).

Finally, why not version control your
Dockerfile
and add a

Makefile
for next time you forget this process and need to update
the image?

image=collbox/clojure-ci
build:
docker build --tag $(image) .
push:
docker push $(image)
.PHONY: build push

Now you can rebuild the image with a simple
make build
or re-push it
with
make push
.

Thats all there is to it.

If you want to see the code above fully
assembled, check out collbox/clojure-ci-docker on
