This hobby became the biggest open source project ever created and arguably the most important software ever created. Linux is use in pretty much every type of computing device from phones to desktops, super computers to raspberry pi's, or from cars to the international space station.

Linux as a platform means so much to so many people that the Destination Linux Network decided to throw a virtual party. This past Sunday, we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Linux with a special event where anyone could join us in our Jitsi room to talk about Linux, what it means to them, ask DLN Creators anything they wanted to and we also did some gaming with the community. We called this even the DLN MegaFest and the entire MegaFest is available to watch right now on our YouTube channel but here are a few highlights from the event.

## Other Videos for 30 Years of Linux
DLN MegaFest ►► https://youtu.be/d2tYUFWeW0I

DLN Xtend 71 ►► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C9BYmF4GF8
Destination Linux 240 ►► https://youtu.be/bXMpAMfqNSI
...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9s6jNwqvLs

We are happy to announce the release of Nyxt version 1.3.1!

This version includes important bug fixes, an improved minibuffer experience, better support for various platforms (D-Bus should be handled properly), not forgetting that Nyxt is back to the official Guix repository! (This should make it easier to install Nyxt on any OS running a Linux kernel.)

A screenshot of the minibuffer with fuzzy-matching on the URLs and titles of the buffers:

On the community level, we've overhauled our article/blog page https://nyxt.atlas.engineer/articles, with the aim of regularly publishing articles on our progress, along various Nyxt hacks and configuration tips.

Print page title in buffer list.

And the title is matched when fuzzy-searching a buffer!

Improved minibuffer performance: it now shows up instantly.

Open external links in new buffer by default.

This can be configured by setting
(open-external-link-in-new-window-p
*interface*)
to the desired boolean.

Return to last created buffer when deleting buffer.

When killing the last created buffer, we were brought back to the first one, so usually the help buffer. This is now fixed, we stay at the previous last created buffer, as expected.

Minibuffer
M-backspace
improvements.

In the minibuffer, using
M-backspace
to delete a word didn't respect white spaces. It is fixed.

Its behaviour was also too different than other common tools, like Firefox. Now:

it deletes the trailing word delimiter;

it removes all trailing delimiters plus one word.

Add keypad bindings

Nyxt is back to the Guix official channel

The Nyxt Guix channel can be safely removed from your
~/.config/guix/channels.scm
before running a
guix pull
.

Mouse
button2
(middle click) opens a URL in a new buffer/window.

Automatically fall back to a local D-Bus session if none can be used.

Fix platform port log file path on Guix.

It is now properly set to
~/.local/share/nyxt/nyxt-gtk-webkit.log
by default.

Fix ignored search engine prefix in minibuffer input.

Fix browsed URLs not being added to history.

Yes, this is better for a daily usage :)

Fix crash when proxy-mode was added to the list of default modes.

You can now add this to your
~/.config/nyxt/init.lisp
to open pages in proxy-mode by default:

(setf (get-default 'proxy-mode 'server-address) "socks5://localhost:1080")
(add-to-default-list 'proxy-mode 'buffer 'default-modes)

Thanks to @MasterCsquare.

More bug fixes (special thanks to Solomon Bloch, @goose121, Sean Farley, @glacambre).

Developer changes:

The Makefile automatically updates the Quicklisp distribution.

Nyxt uses its own installation path for the Quicklisp dependencies, it doesn't mesh with your existing
~/quicklisp/local-projects
. Now you can follow git master without the surprise of a library missing a function.

Remove cl-string-match and cl-strings dependencies.

Now we mostly rely on str and cl-ppcre.

What's next?

We have many new and exciting features in the pipeline that we should release shortly:

a password manager,

a kill ring,

the possibility to quickly open any file with fuzzy search,

new minibuffer improvements, such as multi-selection,

session persistence,

Select frame: a new model for interaction

By John Mercouris

Typical interactions with web pages involve a single element. For example, when we view a search result, we visit or open each result one at a time.

This approach does not scale, it is tedious, and prone to misclicks.

Why can't we drag and select multiple objects like in our file explorers? Why do we have to manually interact with every single element?

Turns out, we don't have to. As a result of this development, Nyxt now offers a drag-select interface (
select-frame-*
) to interact with multiple elements at once!

How to use it?

Let's consider the common example of searching via a search engine, and then opening up the search results in several tabs/buffers.

Begin by invoking
select-frame-new-buffer
.

Click to set the top-left of your selection area.

Click again, this time to set the bottom right of your selection area.

Confirm your selection in the prompt-buffer by typing in
C-s
.

Finally press
RET
to open up all of your selections in new tabs/buffers.

It doesn't matter whether you select one link, or a thousand, the amount of steps is the same.

Another common example is visiting a news aggregator website. In this example we'll be visiting Hacker News. We'll be doing something quite similar as above to select multiple elements, but this time, we'll start an
expedition
rather than opening a new tab/buffer for each link.

After we select our frame, we can now begin our
expedition
. Our
expedition
is a way of recording a list of links that we want to visit. If we invoke
C-]
or
C-[
we'll go forward/backward through all of the links. And just like that, our journey begins! Super easy browsing!

We hope you enjoy this new paradigm and find creative uses for it!

Thanks for reading :-)

Eliminate large groups of buffers by saving them to a single page with Nyxt's
reduce-to-buffer
command. To use it, select all of the buffers you would like reduced, Nyxt will then:

add them to a list,

print the list's URLs + computationally generated summaries on a convenient page,

close the list of buffers.

What is it for? When to use it?

You can use
reduce-to-buffer
any time you need to compress a large group of buffers into an easily consumable form.

There are many possibilities, here are a few:

Do you want to save a group of buffers for later?

Do you want to easily clear up your current session without losing any potentially valuable links?

Would you like to document and save a list of buffers relating to a specific project you are working on?

Would you like a convenient format to easily share a set of links with a colleague?

How to use it?

To begin, identify a list of buffers that you would like to compress. In this case, we will compress our research about various types of elephants.

Next, we select the buffers we would like reduced:

Finally, our buffers are reduced and (optionally) summarized:

We hope you enjoy
reduce-to-buffer
!

Nyxt 2 Pre-release 6

We are happy to announce the sixth pre-release of Nyxt version 2.0.0. If you missed the previous pre-release announcement, see here.

Nyxt 2 is a massive overhaul of the Nyxt 1 series. A lot of effort has been geared towards improving the code quality under the hood which should reflect on the overall user experience with better performance, increased stability and better accessibility.

This is a test release for everyone to try out before the final release. It contains experimental features and some parts are still unfinished. Please feel free to share your feedback on our GitHub issue tracker!

Notable highlights:

New prompt-buffer, replacing the minibuffer for all user interactions.

Important highlights:

Universal input method support (such as with UIM, IBus, etc.). In other words, you can now input text in any language (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indic, etc.)

Asynchronous suggestion computation: This implies a performance boost: prompt input is always responsive, regardless of the suggestion computation.

Multi-source support: get suggestions from different source compositions! This is not fully leveraged for now, it will be in the coming version!

Multi-action support: open the prompt, narrow down, mark, and press
M-return
to list all the actions you can operate on the marks.

Multi-column display: all suggestion properties are configuration via the
object-properties
method. Press
C-]
to configure the columns to display.

New
resume-prompt
command, for instance to resume a search where you left it.

New "follow mode" (toggle with
C-c C-f
). Try it in
switch-buffer
, it will update the view with the selected suggestion!

New
describe-any
command. It leverages the new prompt buffer multi-source feature to conflate all help sources.

Global history tree (GHT). See our article for an introduction.

New
nosave
buffer commands. A
nosave
buffer does not persist any data to disk. (This feature is also known as "icognito" or "private" mode in some other browsers.)

New
visual-mode
. (Thanks to @kssytsrk!)

New
watch-mode
. (Thanks to @aadcg!)

New
diff
command. (Thanks to @aadcg!)

Rename
fill-input-from-external-editor
to
edit-with-external-editor
. (Thanks to @aadcg!)

The edited HTML content is replicated in the editor, then the editor content is committed back upon closing.

Enable Intelligent Tracking Prevention by default.

Password interfaces now have user classes, thus they are configurable with
define-configuration
.

New
smooth-scrolling

buffer
slot option.

New
update-hostlists
command for
blocker-mode
.

New default
:renderer
download engine.

You can switch download engine with the
download-engine
buffer slot.

Build and platform support:

New non-official platform support: FreeBSD.

macOS is down at the non-official state now. (Help welcome!)

For the complete change list, please consult the CHANGELOG.org file.

We hope you enjoy these new features, and that they help make you more productive. Thanks for reading :-)
