Happy Wednesday!
Congrats to Lois, Britney, Jeffrey, Justin, Hanna, and three others on winning either CSB’s Psalms in 30 Days or Don Pablo’s coffee set from our Christmas Gift Guide.

Of course the real gift is having shared Christ-first news with a friend. Sorta. Actually, the free stuff is pretty cool.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“In the same way that a small child cannot draw a bad picture so a child of God cannot offer a bad prayer.”
Richard J. Foster

Farewell, @Jack

Jack Dorsey is stepping down into the lowly territory of being CEO of just one publicly-traded company.

@Jack, founder and CEO of both Twitter and Square, announced his resignation from the social media giant on Monday (via Twitter) and said he’d leave its board in “May-ish.” He served as CEO from 2006-2008 and again since 2015. During his second stint, Twitter grew and became profitable but has also suffered from “more-impressive-big-brother-syndrome” with Meta (Facebook)... $3.6 billion in profit is less impressive when it’s put next to $86 billion.

Parag Agrawal, who started with Twitter 10 years ago as an engineer, has replaced Jack as CEO, and Jack will devote more time to his payment processing company, Square.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Our goal is to keep the big things big and the small things small. It’s not that who Twitter’s CEO is isn’t important, it’s just not God-of-the-Universe important. Stay focused on eternity; it changes everything.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
Colossians 3:2-4 (CSB)
SPORTS

Sports Tumult

We’ve learned two things so far this week: the college football carousel is a-spinnin’ and the MLB is a-spendin’.

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley accepted an offer he couldn’t refuse to coach the USC Trojans and the unraveling Sooners quickly lost recruits, players, and coaches in the wake of the coup.

Not to be outdone, LSU announced its own blockbuster hire. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s winningest coach, is callin’ Baton Rouge his new home thanks to a new 10-year, $100 million contract.

Over in the MLB, the Texas Rangers dropped more than any team in an offseason ever—in less than 24 hours—to snag some new (lone)stars; and the NY Mets signed star pitcher Max Scherzer to a record-setting contract with an annual salary higher than two franchises’ entire payrolls.

Page-Flipping Fingers

There are a lot of reasons to read a Bible: private devotion, accidentally taking a Greek history class, scripture memorization, exercising your page-flipping fingers, and many others.

No matter your reason, we recommend the CSB translation.

INTERNATIONAL

Pipeline

Nord Stream 2 isn’t a new super soaker; it’s a controversial natural gas pipeline stretching from Germany to Russia via the Baltic Sea.

The 756-mile-long tube would double the annual supply of gas to the EU, but render the current pipelines running through Ukraine unnecessary. Supporters feel it’s critical to meeting energy needs. Opponents worry that Europe will become too reliant on Russian gas… and that there’s more political motivation than meets the eye.

Paired with increasing numbers of Russian troops at the Ukrainian border, concern is rising that the pipeline could be used to put economic pressure on Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine, the U.S. is considering (more) sanctions against Russia. Germany is lobbying against such sanctions.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Our hope is never contingent on a geopolitical outcome. It’s much more secure than that. Regardless of whether things get worse or better based on the decisions of world powers, everything eventually ends well for followers of Christ.

“Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Philippians 4:6 (CSB)

IN OTHER BREWS...

An expert panel voted 13-10 to recommend the FDA authorize Merck’s COVID pill for high-risk adults; the agency is expected to make the final decision within days. Meanwhile, the CDC updated their booster guidance to say all adults 18+ “should” get the booster. The agency previously said all adults “may” get it.

The stock market had a tough Tuesday. The Dow and S&P 500 were both down almost 2% yesterday, reacting to both Omicron and news that the Federal Reserve is considering rolling back pandemic-era support quicker than before in order to combat inflation.

In his first interview since the car accident in February, Tiger Woods said he aims to play a few tournaments a year but will never play golf full-time again. He dodged questions about the crash but said he’s “lucky to be alive” and it was “50-50” on whether his leg would be amputated.

Negotiations over lifting economic sanctions on Iran in return for them limiting nuclear development have re-re-restarted. Iran is still angry about the U.S. withdrawing from the previous deal and is refusing to meet directly, so European diplomats are relaying messages between American and Iranian officials in separate hotels… efficient.

Actor Jussie Smollett’s trial began Monday. Smollett, who is Black, is accused of staging a "fake hate crime" for publicity to further his career. Prosecutors say he paid men to tie a noose around his neck while shouting "MAGA." The defense says "Smollett is a real victim" and that he was hurt during the incident.

There is a new queen in Barbados. The island nation officially became a parliamentary republic, separating its ties with the U.K. and Queen Elizabeth. In the celebratory event, the country recognized their new President, Mia Mottley, and honored its most famous native, singer and entrepreneur Rhianna, as a national hero.

What We’re Listening To
Cozy Christmas by Dalton Storm*

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, it’s officially the time of year for us all to get sick of hearing the same old Christmas music. Instead of contributing to the “make Mariah Carey even richer” fund, mix it up with something new!

Dalton Storm, an independent singer & songwriter just released an EP of his holiday favorites titled, Cozy Christmas. From “Happy Holidays” to “Another Christmas Without You,” this mellow collection of covers and originals will have you curled up by an open fire faster than you can say “feliz navidad.”
