Until there is validation that Steam is indeed releasing a portable gaming console, you can still have more portable gaming at home using a Raspberry Pi and turning it into a Steam Link.
What you need is:
A Raspberry Pi 3B+
Latest Raspbian installed on an SD card
Ethernet connections for your Raspberry Pi and of course a trusty gaming PC
A Steam Link will let you Stream your games from your gaming PC to any place in the house. Living room, kids rooms, whereever you want it.
Once you have Raspbian setup on your Pi run this command:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install steamlink
Once installed we can close the terminal and then click on the Steam Link desktop icon to launch the application, go through the setup promots to connect it to your gaming PC
You can use the following controllers with Steam Link: Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
That’s it, now anywhere you put the Pi is a gaming console linked to your PC.
