Hey everybody! I'm going to start suggesting that we change a few of the tools we use throughout the ministry as a result of some research and attention to the way our world continues to change. Because a lot of our tools go overboard in invading privacy and making it more and more dangerous for us to use, I'd really like to see us changing those tools and doing what we can to protect ourselves and the information we have on students.
I'm sure most, if not all, know how Google tracks everything you do on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge does the same but reports to Microsoft. Along with that Facebook embeds something called cookies into your browser to track everything you do as you browse the internet. These are commonly known things, but something that a lot of people either just don't know or don't care enough about to change something about it.
My first suggestion of tools to change would be your internet browser and search engine choice. Instead of using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, I'd highly suggest that you use either Brave (https://brave.com/) or Mozilla Firefox (https://www.firefox-com). Both of these browsers are considered to be EXTREMELY helpful for your privacy and security. Both don't track what you do on the internet and go to great lengths to protect you from being tracked by things like Facebook WHILE you use the internet. Brave in particular comes with powerful ad-blocking systems built in while Firefox leaves that to the job of an extension you can add by going here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/) while using firefox.
If you are worried that this will disrupt your flow with things for a while, my suggestion is to make the change and while starting the new browser for the first time, follow the instructions to import your stuff from your other browser you used. THEN on your taskbar at the bottom right click and unpin all other browsers. Removing Chrome and Edge makes it much harder to accidentally use them. Then in your new browser make sure to add it as the new default for your computer.
The other suggestion I have is to change your primary search engine. It has become so engrained into our lives to use Google to find things that we use "Google" as a verb for searching. The issue is Google tracks literally every search and tells everyone what you're looking at so they can all provide you with better ads and know what you're up to. Google search creates a very elaborate and detailed portfolio on who you are to make sure they can always give you relevant ads. This sounds ok up front but is a HUGE waste of resources and they definitely don't clearly ask for permission to do so. The solution, just don't use Google to search for things. You can easily use something like DuckDuckGo or StartPage, but I've created a search engine for TFC that utilizes a whole bunch of search engines and keeps your searches private. You can find it at http://search.tfcconnection.org/. This is the easiest way to still get basically the same results.
