It is the foundation of READING! And its an easy thing to rush through without paying attention. But pay attention and youll do much better.

The better you are at observation, the better the rest of you bible study will be. So get at it!

Here are three things to know about bible study.

JUST LOOKING
First, adopt the mindset of a window shopper. Youre just looking. Youre not buying, youre just passing through getting a feel for what youre looking at. You may walking in, but youre not buying. Just look! Let yourself, as Charles Spergeon would say, lie asoak in the text. Let it was over you.

Youre not saying not saying anything about this text, youre letting the text speak!

This is important because if we dont let the text speak fully, well jump to a conclusion to quickly that may a poor conclusion. So refrain from doing it.

YOURE IN THE HANDS OF A MASTER
Second, adopt the mindset that youre in the hands of a master.

If its a story youre reading, then assume youre in the hands of a master story telling.

If its a piece of prose, then youre in the hands of a master communicator.

If its a piece of poetry, same thing.

Having this assumption will help you to pay attention to the details.

THIS IS NOT A RANDOM STORY OF A FRIEND
When a kid tells a story many times, theyll give you information that has nothing to do with anything. So as an adult youll have to disregard much of what was said so you can understand what the child was trying to say.

You do the opposite with the books of the bible, instead, you can look over everything with a magnifying glass and ask questions you wouldnt think to ask any other piece of literature or prose.

This is the exciting part of the bible, because it is virtually limitless is the things you can look at that will actually having meaning for us.

LOOK!
The last thing to do is to LOOK! And keep looking. There are many things to look at on a page, but here are the things to keep in minds.

WORDS
Words! Look at words on the page. Particularly repeated words. Words that have theological weight. Words that catch you off guard. Pay attention to the words!

GENRE
Genre. Also look at genre. Is it poetry? Prose? Narrative? What kind of story is this?

PLACE
Place. In three ways.

IN BOOK
Where are you at in the book?

IN HISTORY
Where are you at in history?

LOCATION
Where are you at in the world?

PEOPLE
Who are the people? How many?

GOD
God, whats God doing? is he mentioned?

_____________________________________________________________
This is the surface of what to look for.

But remember, in the beginning, you just looking around not committed to anything, youre also remembering that youre in the hands
...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feClcW7L2o4
