* LESSON
So What?
Unit 1: In the Beginning - Lesson 1B
Gods love for us, his creation helps us know ourselves
** Getting on target
Can anyone tell me what we talked about last week? Who am I? Why am I here?
Thats where we started last week. As we continue we need to continue in this direction. It is important to introduce the teens to Genesis 1-3, which will be the central scriptural focus for the remainder of the series. We will have this portion of scripture available for the teens in printout form, but we wont actually start looking at it until the following lesson. First we want them to learn more about our creative and powerful God, encouraging them to make new connections about the implications for their identity and purpose. Again, the goal is for students to acknowledge that they and everything God created is dependent upon him for life, purpose, and sustenance. This lesson has the potential to bring up lots of questions from the teens. They may be very important questions for them, so dont try to rush this.
- Psalm 104
- Ephesians 1:3-6 (ESV)
** Kicking Off
VIDEO - Ipod Cutting Board
- Its sad when something isnt used for the purpose for which it was created!
Today we continue on from last weeks lesson which was titled “Who am I and why am I here.”
(Have students open their bibles. Your choice of whether to put it on the screen or not.)
** Scripture
READ Ephesians 1:3-8 (maybe in the message)
- In verse 1 what has God done for us according to verse 1?
(blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places)
- In verses 4-5 what has God done for us?
(predestined us for adoption as sons through Christ)
Encourage students to underline these points in their bibles.
- When did God first know, love and choose us? (vs 4)
(before the foundation of the world)
Even before you were conceived and born. Before God created the earth, the sun, and moon-you were loved!
Show Adoption Video
- What does it mean to you to know you are adopted by God to be his son or daughter and to be blessed with every spiritual blessing?
(challenge the teens to go deeper by asking them to explain their responses,[how, why, what would that look like, etc..])
- Do we deserve to be adopted by God?
- What has Christ lavished upon those who trust in him? (vs. 7-8)
- Who knows what lavish means?
- Redemption through His blood Meaning?
- Forgiveness of our sins Meaning?
- The riches of His grace Meaning?
Read Psalm 104 - Tonight we'll only have time to look at one or two sets of these verses but each time we'll answer the questions on your paper.
- Group 1: Verses 1-13
- Group 2: Verses 14-23
- Group 3: Verses 24-35
Each group answers the same questions:
1. What do these verses say about God and his creation?
2. Who is creation dependent upon, especially for you and me?
3. What should our response and attitude be towards God?
- What is the relationship of God the Creator to his creation?
So What?
Q: Who am I and Why am I here?
A; “Since God is the Creator and I am his creation, the only way to understand my identity and purpose is to live in dependence upon him.”
Give students time to address God on the “Dear God” section like last lesson. Give them about 5 minutes to complete.
Dear God, When I think about who you created me to be,
I am amazed because……
I am in awe of……
I thank you for……
